OK friends, I enter this area with humility. I have bungled and have learned from it. I would like to share my mistakes.
I have heard repeatedly here and on other forums about not doing a lot of online searching concerning your possible domain name until you are ready to pay for it. So I did some research and came up with a timely, stylish domain name for my blog. I have spent several days now socially promoting and optimizing that website. Well, it turns out that a very active member of that community already uses that domain name for his screen name. I figure we are going to have a meeting sometime in the near future. I honestly didn't know about this and really don't want the name now. Maybe he will be in a buying mood since it's already developed.
Second domain name mistake: For my events website that serves my county I chose my counties name as the beginning of my domain. Well the problem is when you google just the county name you get all of the county official websites for all of the counties in the US with that name. They all have a PR of 4 or higher. It's going to be tough to get on the first page against those pages. So I didn't do my DD correctly for that domain name. I think it will be OK but it will cost more time and money in local promotion.
Moral of the story is to really consider your domain names from a lot of different angles.
