Nick D’Aloisio hails from London and just turned 17 yesterday. The teenager took a year off school to develop Summly, an iOS app that summarizes news stories using an algorithm. The app shot to the ninth slot in the App Store within two hours of being released, and has received over $1,000,000 in funding.

The app is actually quite good. The UI is a bit weird but once you know it's quite good. I use my copy most days.

The most amazing thing is the amount of free PR it's got. Virtually every major UK newspaper, even the BBC have covered it. THAT's impressive!!!

Updating the thread.

Yahoo! Inc., the largest U.S. Web portal, said it’s buying Summly, a mobile startup that makes an app to help smartphone and tablet users find, read and share online news and information.

Terms of the deal aren’t being disclosed, Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo said today on its blog. Nick D’Aloisio, who founded Summly at the age of 15, will join Yahoo along with the rest of his team, according to the blog.
