So I had an interesting discussion with a friend of mine (as we were working on our SaaS project) over Discord and the topic we brought up was this:

Can a country "invade" the United States (US)?

With a military spending of over $778 billion, the United States spent more than the rest of the world combined.
Geographically, the US is so far apart from everyone else (in terms of adversaries like China, Russia, etc.).
To establish a supply line continents apart is a logistic nightmare.

With so many allies like Canada, and Mexico how can an invader even attempt a foothold?
California? Alaska? Maybe, but then the US has the most powerful navy in the world.

My friend joked: "Guess who has the largest air force? US Airforce. Guess who has the second largest? US Navy."

I joked and said "From space! Invade from space! Space Marines!"

Even then, if an invader was to drop from space, the US, on equal terms, would also have some space defense.

Aside from Nuclear warfare, can a country invade the US (boots on the ground)?
Even though the US's population are a bunch of lazy, obese people, a chunk are willing to fight and have the firepower to do so.

Perhaps the only way someone would invade is if the US enters into a civil war.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Just a fun topic.

I've had thoughts like this before, but then I remember why invade the US when you can just "steal" it from within LOL. Less of a hassle. Politicians are ready and willing to sell out the country. Take control of its institutions.

Maybe that's a way to trigger a "civil war" :p
Politicians or not, if you piss enough people off, then you could trigger some physical event and I'm not talking about some woke protest

The US has already been conquered and is currently vulnerable since its enemies can/may aid outside enemies to whom they are a part of or loyal to. Also, China has bases in Canada. I think when the civil war breaks out in the US there will be several countries attempting to take land.

You'll have Mexico from the south for sure. The people running California will let them in. You really have to ignore borders because they are imaginary/abstract. Many parts of the US are already hostile/conquered. Just pay attention to demographics. When land changes hands in a country they never really officially announce it. You have to recognize it on your own.

BTW, look at other parts of the world past and present where there were ethnic/religious hostilities and see the tell-tale signs of how those conflicts started and ended. It always starts and ends the same way.

Cyber warfare is one method to cripple a nation and make it more vulnerable. I remember reading stuff in a class about how unprotected a lot of major infrastructures are that we rely on heavily for everyday life (water, power, transportation, food chain, telecommunications). We've seen cyber attacks on a pipeline cause massive disruptions already.

I agree with the earlier comment too that it could be done politically too.

Is it possible? Yes.
Will it be easy? Not at all.

And even if someone wanted to invade, with how connected the world economy is, it'd plunge everyone else into chaos, and everyone -- especially the wealthy politicians who rubber stamp wars -- hate losing money. The conflict in Ukraine is already causing a bunch of short-term economic issues, let alone the long-term.

As long as the U.S. maintains its status as a major economic player and national economies prefer to rely on one another, just doesn't make good business sense.

And even with regards to civil war.. people can barely handle the "discomfort" of wearing masks during the pandemic or supply chain disruptions; most people in America are too entitled and lazy to do themselves in. It's the stupidity and willingness to fall in like sheep to whatever talking head, however, that worries me but even then, easier to talk than act.

No. An attacker is always about 6x more likely to lose than a defender for a whole host of reasons. The defender is usually more motivated to protect himself, he knows the ground & terrain well, and has a reliable infrastructure and supply chain to ensure ammunition and food, as well as the moral high ground and capacity to rally the common man to the cause.

Now a successful ground invasion of the US would require a massively complex supply chain that is virtually impossible to ensure. It would have to go by water and then also on land inside the US. Given that, plus the defendant’s inherent superiority over the attacker, plus the gigantic size of the US army and technological advantage, there is no way that would happen.

Not even if China was to grow 3x the size of the US in terms of economy and military, that wouldn’t be feasible. A country would literarily have to be 4-5x US in terms of economy and 15-20x in terms of military/technological superiority. What’s more likely to happen in the US is for the empire to fracture and break up. Meaning that states will leave the federal government and US will descend into civil war. After something like that, one side could ally with another nation and gain their support to battle the others. But a direct invasion is virtually impossible.

Russia and China are both working hard to make this latter scenario a reality, by the way.

There's a difference between citizens from Mexico and El Salvador etc. entering the country, and a land invasion by a foreign governmental power and its military which it seems what OP is talking about.

Over half the US border is coastline with thousands of miles of ocean on either side separating it from any other major power. I don't see the ships or tanks rolling in anytime soon, and certainly not from Canada or Mexico

It could be possible to invade with boots on the ground for a short while. The secret sauce will be a surprise attack from less friendly nations like cuba and Nicaragua. And since the adversaries need to be discrete, a barrage of hypersonic missiles, which are very difficult to intercept, need to be launched to the amphibious landing site(presumably south florida). And even though though the US military spends more and is more advanced than any other country, it is spread very widely. It is operational in every area of the world which weakens it that's why even though China's Navy is inferior to the US's, it has a good chance of winning a battle in the south China sea due to its concentrated forces

I think they would take NY, NJ and Cali pretty easy cuz we are a bunch of pansies. I think once they hit states that are actually ALLOWED to have guns and have a high sense of patriotism (Texas, Florida, Carolinas, Virginias, etc.) they would be in for a hurt. My boy that moved to Nj from south carolina use to keep like a mini machine gun in his trunk. I said bro you get caught with that up here your going away for lifeeee.

It is possible yes. But like Abraham Lincoln said “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we lose our freedoms it will be because we have destroyed ourselves from within

I think the main way we will most likely be invaded is if we become so weak outside forces can cross the entire atlantic/pacific and we still dont stop them.

Or we are so stripped of pride/vigor/morale whatever we dont give a F*ck and let them come in, essentially.

We already see remnants of that in the work and dating scene. Peoples choosing to live in vans, cars, rise of minimalism, men opting out of even persuing women/family and women preferring work/careers to family. And dont get me started on culture.

No we dont have to go back to the 50s, 70s or even 90s. But the current morale and culture is going full speed to decadence/chaos.

So yes, we can be invaded. But only when we are so weak they either
A) Dont have to, we collapse within.
B) Too weak to fight them off.
C) Dont give a shit, let 'em take this burning shitshow of a culture and people.

"For evil to prosper all it takes is for good men to do nothing." Or something like that.
/endcornyquotes

Good point. Also the few times civilizations were successful at invading Russia was when it was in civil war already. Or so I heard. Too lazy to look it up. But bottom line a nation at war with itself means easy pickings for the enemy.
Several examples in Chinas history with all the warring dynasties.

Is it possible? Yes.

Indeed, The US being invaded would indubitably be WW3 if not the end of the world. Sounds dramatic but youre talking about the cultural, economical(well, maybe China soon) and monetary core of the world being attacked. Not even the best economists and greatest minds would be able to measure the long term fallouts of that imo

What about if eventually the world moves away from the US dollar and the US has to face its $30 Trillion debt?

You Americans really trash your own military lol. We non Americans see your military like a god. When you have multiple military bases in a foreign country that can be their own cities, you really question your own sovereignty

No other country has the power strong enough to invade U.S. successfully.

As many have point out, triggered by economic crisis, civil unrest, civil war or military coup are more likely events in the distant future.

Just look at latin America for historical lessons.

Looks like a lot of yall have mixed thoughts about the topic

But from what it looks like based of the overall, the most feasible way is a civil war.
I agree :)
The only thing us Americans love more than talking about our past civil war is fantasizing about a future American civil war and how glorious its outcome will be.

Will other countries interfere? No way!

Will MY side win total victory and implement MY ideological vision of the future? Absolutely!!! And I'll still be alive to enjoy it with all of my friends and family and property and assets! Yay!!

/sarcasm

It is possible but it's going to be very difficult OR unless the United States start some sort of civil war over some dumb stuff that's irrelevant in the big picture then it'll increase the odds significantly.

My family is from Poland so looking at that country from a geographical standpoint, it's super easy to invade. All they have to do is start some beef with Germany or Russia and it's over for them. Even the country that I live in now(Norway) is quite difficult to invade. Not just because of where it's located but the cold nordic weather that takes place here between October-March doesn't make it easy either. I believe Napoleon lost his troops in Russia because of the freezing weather that took place at the time during winter.

United States on the other hand is actually a very difficult country to invade, even for behemoths like Russia or China. The geographical location itself makes it 100x harder. Plus they got a huge economy that can fund their supplies.

United States would have to destroy themselves for it to happen realistically.

Haha, yeah. Those high school kids single-handedly defended and saved America as we know it, in 1984. Otherwise, we'd all be eating borsch by now. This TikTok generation will never understand or live up to the bravery and sacrifice of the great Wolverines!

By the way, I just watched this movie again some days ago.

Realistically this is already in the works.
China has been wargaming in Canada for a few years and has agreements with Canada to allow china to protect Chinese assets. Guess who is buying lots of Canadian frontier land and also major swaths of land on the west coast.
Border patrol has made extensive noise over the all the young men of Chinese origin coming over the Mexican border. How many of them are loyal to their homeland and have the desire to assist if/when the day comes. How many people does it take to collapse a grid or take out a base?
China has extensive infrastructure under construction right over the Mexican border. Mostly metal processing and electronics, but infrastructure is infrastructure and factories get repurposed during wartime.
