Hello everyone, FIRSTLY - if you do read this to the end - THANKS IN ADVANCE and DEEPLY APPRECIATED
in case you have not seen my intro;

I’m Simon, originally from London, since 1994 successfully made a good living creating skylines of the cities I’m in with spraypaints to music in a matter of minutes for mesmerized tourists and locals alike!

34780 34782. 34783 34786

Life pre-Covid WAS very simple, very pure.
Find a high traffic tourist location, that did not cause an obstruction and break local laws and perform my art- happy crowds appear - and when I’m finished THEY ask how much and would say - give me what you can afford (after 25 years around the world- I’m no longer a cynical city kid & and mean Parartrooper and know that the vast majority of people are LOVELY) and off they went with their new addition to their home- we all go home happy- simple!
(Having read both of @MJ DeMarco’s books I now know there’s a bit of a Sidewalker in me and a combo of slowlaner and and thankfully lots of Fastlane DNA bubbling to get out!)

All was good until CV19 as relocated to Vegas- then lockdown (my life savings had gone to buy a home for my Mum -cash- and fund a kid’s multi-media project - the near-global tv-series deals, the stumbling blocks I now need to address and overcome explained in another thread) came and I hunkered down.

I NEEDED to find a way to sell my art online.

SO I used my time wisely and did 2 courses on Udemy, one for Facebook Ads and the other for YouTube Video Ads (both ranked #1 on Udemy)
Also did a great course from a fellow that successfully sells his hanging glass water gardens online - and shares his knowledge of how he grew his Facebook Business Page to 92K followers and some really good info (I thought!) on the power of Facebook Ads.

So I bought exercise books and highlighters and went back to school, after a month or so of intense studying and reviewing,,,,

With my new-found knowledge I did the following:
YouTube:

***
Tried to run a Google Adwords Search Ad for “Do you like Spray Paint Art ?” & another “Original NYC Spaypaint Artist Since 1994” with keywords and negative keywords which I checked in Keyword Planner - the ads did not run (SEE BELOW for the reason)

*** I tried to run some Skippable Instream Video Ads -
that looked like the spray paint video people were going to view but at the very end of my 1 min video the offer to come to see more at my Shopify store.

The first ad did not show for three days - the course and various videos on YT explain it is because YT’s Algorithm needs to pick it up then they will run- when they didn’t I tired 6 new ads - over the next 2 months and NONE showed.

Got onto the guy that ran the Udemy course and he was a star and took a look at my back end (HEY NOW:))
He could not find the answer and put me onto Google to get the answer.
Lovely lady, after trying for 3 days- said above her pay grade and got Tech Support to take over.
After another week they dropped the BOMB;

I’d innocently said in the ads “for the first time ever I’m offering my artwork online as trapped in Vegas due to the Corona Virus - so click the link here to see some more designs or ask for a custom made one especially for you today!”

SO three months of 6 iterations, could have been avoided had Google flagged me and explained it to me, a bit of due diligence from their so-called amazing A.I.

The kicker was the next day ALL my ads in the Dashboard were now miraculously flagged!

*** So lesson learned and move forward, I ran a Brand Consideration (to get traffic and date to later retarget these with a Conversion Campaign) and got at $8 a day for 10 days to test and got a 16% View Rate and CPV of 7 cents which I think are good!?????
(open for feedback here as-everywhere -thanks in advance)

This is where I’m at today, Monday - Labor Day (see what I did there? I spelled as an American - old English hounds can be taught new trixxx :))

TIK TOK:
I have opened a TikTok account and posted a few videos with a short intro then time lapse video of the painting I made for that particular celebrity that is relevant to my style of artwork.

Example J-Lo & ARod as they both are connected to NYC so i painted NYC skylines with their parents flags and then obviously # and @ within the description

I was planning on doing this for many celebs over the coming weeks who are connected to the cities I paint or can paint and following a similar formula - until one or more goes viral -

INSTAGRAM:
Similar procedure here as Tik Tok - do need to post more though and will.

FACEBOOK:

***
Ran a Page Likes Campaign - which I got the CPC down to 23 cents - which I was very happy with (as some YT videos - always cross reference the course info to get 2nd- fifth opinions)

*** Ran a Conversion Campaign (but very little website traffic) and NO sales or even Abandoned Shopping Cart Visitors

*** Posted what I thought was relevant, cool content with open questions (like you’d ask at a gathering of strangers at say a bar or party to invite conversation) for the past five months and very little engagement, not even slightly touching the G-Spot of Google’s Algorithm!!!

*** Ran a Monthly Giveaway - (I listened to a podcast where this 25 yr old who sold his social media company for over a £Billion- explained how FB’s organic reach was around 1% if you have lots of engagement- the guys who run the courses I bought said similar too) so I ran Engagement ads.

So read the figures on the backend of Ads Manager that had me salivating 4,369 in a week WOW -

The day before the Giveaway renounced and reminded people on my biz page.

Hardly anyone turned up apart from my friends i grew up with!

So picked myself up, dusted myself down created new posts, and tried again 3 more times and yesterday after running ads at $3 a day for 3 weeks, announcing 24 hours before - 6 people turn up - 5 are my mates from childhood!!!

I NEED help, any advice as to get SALES on my Shopify store that is linked to my FaceBook biz page, I’m floundering fast and time is running out for me.

I just need 5 sales a day to keep the wolf from the door and anything over that will go to funding the kid’s project (again that’s another post) that will become my main focus (one step at a time- I know MJ is so right when he talks about the process and trusting it)

(I am not here to promote it and break the forum’s rules I wish to be respectful and am humbled to be here, where I can ask those who have successfully trod the path and can share with those like me floundering in ignorance and i NEED of a little help)

**** My first question is, do you think it is wise to focus on growing and maintaining my Facebook Fan page?
As I put out a post announcing a Giveaway to people who I paid for via a Likes Campaign (who supposedly via the granular advertising of the power of Facebook’s AI - LOVE graffiti- street art - Banksy- NYC, the Twin Towers - /all VERY relevant to my particular style of spray paint art - as I’m the original NYC Spray paint artist since 94) and out of 580 followers I get 2-8 engagements!

**** Do you think that Facebook ads are an effective means of getting traffic to my site and ultimately sales? (I get I should create a Productocrasy and will work on content - week by week BUT NEED SALES NOW!) so looking for the best ad bang for my limited buck(s)

**** My next question is, am i taking the correct route with my ads - FIRST get feet in the door of my Shopify store (creating the all important DATA) then run Conversion Ads with BOTH YouTube and Facebook?

**** Finally - THANKS from the bottom of my strawberry tart (that’s Cockney Rhyming slang for heart!) for taking your precious time in reading this, for any pertinent advice you can share with me, illuminating the dark, dank areas of my mind and allowing me into the light to share what I have with those who love what I do that don’t know I exist YET!
(as I have done so successfully in the physical world - for 25 years all over the world)

PS When I apply what you say, and I get breakthroughs - I’m gonna be reaching out and giving you and painting as I thank you.

PPS As a footnote- a Youtube search for spray paint art - top ten if you set the filter to view count - there's over 135 million views- so there's 'probably' a market out there for me!

All the best, with all the good things you undertake
Simon

Hi Simon

Said to here that COVID hit you so badly. But your effort is really amazing I have to say.
I'm really not en expert on google ads and only did three courses on social media ads. But I thought I shared my opinion anyways, hope that's good for you.

I'd take a little different approach:

1. Would try to go viral with your story. It has all the potential it needs. An artist with great work, who was hit by corona and now is selling his art online, that could work perfectly. So I would do shot a small video, and try to explain your story in under 60 seconds, would do it a little bit emotional. And try to go viral on Tiktok with that. Would post the same on Instagram and shorten the video to 15 seconds and post it on Instagram reel. Which has great exposure at the moment. And obviously also on Facebook.
Maybe it's even better if you shoot some additional shots of you paining and explaining your work.

2. Pay some bigger influencers to repost your story. If you sell them your story good they might even give you a heavy discount. Then wait and hope for the best.

It's maybe not the path you want to go but think it could be the most profitable way.

And additionally, if I'm honest I don't know much about art, so if your pictures are priced quite high it may don't work. But if you need any help feel free to hit me up.

Cheers
Kasimir

Hi Kasimir,
I really like your ideas and thank you for taking the time to read my long post and responding - nice one mate.

#1 - YES - I am going to do this Tuesday AM- booked into my schedule and will do a a few variations with different time lapse videos of my art - after my initial say 30 seconds of explaining my situation where people can get my art work on Shopify - GREAT SUGGESTION - thanks.

#2 Another great suggestion which I'm totally open to- do you have any suggestions as how to approach and contact influencers?

For the record I have opened a TikTok account and posted a few videos with a short intro then time lapse video of the painting I made for that particular celebrity that is relevant to my style of artwork

Do you feel this is good plan?

Again THANKS for your reply - wishing all the best

Hi Simon

Think you're on an amazing path. And I really admire your effort!

#1 Think it's the basis of everything, so very important. But I don't think you'll have any problems there. Would put a lot of effort into the videos. I personally would make a time-lapse and maybe make a voiceover, if you want to you could record yourself doing the voice over and then cutting some clips in the video of you talking. Think the two most important things are: 1. that it's not boring to watch (as easy as it sounds :)) and the 2. is that they see you. Because you represent your brand so they need to know who you are.

#2 Approaching influencers can be made through different paths. Either you just send them a direct message. Or you go through platforms like; Buy Shoutouts from Social Media Influencers. Would definitely start with some smaller influencer first that you can grow a small following base and than either hope that it will take of itself and if it doesn't approach some bigger fish. With the smaller influencer, I would look that if possible that they are a little in the creative niche or a personal brand and not a meme page for example. But later if you try to get a bigger influencer you can certainly get meme pages or so, they usually have pretty low prices for shoutouts.

Think the thing with J-Lo & ARod or other celebrities could potentially work. But it's certainly hard to go viral like this. But also not impossible. Even if you don't go viral like this maybe you get there fanbase to buy some pictures.

If you want to you can send me the link to your social media and website and I take a look maybe I have some other ideas.

Hope I could help a little, and please always know that this is just my personal opinion and a different path could also be possible.

Cheers
Kasimir

Saw your message in another thread.
Hello Pritesh,
I hope this finds you doing well and healthy in these unchartered times, from your name I’m guessing you are from one of my favorite places - (where I travelled EXTENSIVELY) - on earth - so Namaste!

For the past 25 years I’ve successfully created in front of & sold spray paintings around the world. A Successful Sidewalk (literally!) Spray-Paint Artist NEEDS help with e-Commerce- due to CV -19 and police regs I can no longer do this where I live in Las Vegas.

Put me in any police free- good weather- tourist hotspot and within minutes I have a crowd and pockets full of money and happy people walking away from a fair exchange :))

So in April I went to Udemy and took the top rated courses in FB& YT ads, also a course by a very successful online artist of how to grow a FB page and sell online-

Three months of intense study I was bubbling with energy apply my new found knowledge!

Three months later -after various giveaways, building my FB page to 550 “fans”, Monthly Promotions, daily content updates- almost zero engagements per ORGANIC post- (So much for the FB Page course!)

Alongside this front of attack - I tried to place YT ads (I know not you’re but hear this) for 3 months tried 8 different iterations of ads - each would not show- after following JC’s course to the letter- so contacted him - he looked at my back end- HE could not figure it out - so went to Google- they FINALLY after weeks - different tiers of reps- because I used the line “For the first time ever in 25 years due to CORONAVIRUS I’m offering my art online!”

YES we cannot mention CV19 in Google Or YouTube
- the funny thing the next day they put a note on all the ads this was the reason- NOTHING before- so 3 months held up because of this.

Edited the ad I wanted to run and 10 days later good figures back! Was a Traffic ad to build Website Visitors- so when above 1000 will retarget them.

On the third front I have run FB ads as follows:

Engagement 3 times and three ads and ad sets - $2-3 a day (to promote the Monthly Giveaway) 1 cent CPC - The giveaway I announced a day before, then two hours before and the only people turning up were friends from childhood!

The Course I took all recommend this tactic - so when I saw 4-5K Engagement figures WOW I NAIVELY thought = all those people coming to watch the Giveaway and they’ll buy If they don’t win!!!

Page Likes - was happy with this as getting Page Likes for 25 cents a click -

Then also Ran Conversion Ads - as very little traffic to my website I checked Google Analytics and around 300 since opened - so instead of Sales - I set Campaign for Add To Cart & List Content

So five months of trying and ZERO sales
- the Engagement Campaigns even though I put for interests Street Art -Graffiti - Banksy etc (as no particular category in Interests for spray paint art even though MILLIONS of views on Social Media- not me at this stage!) ALMOST zero interest in a FREE painting or coming to my page and watching videos!

The guys that run the FB ads course I took RAVE about Engagement ads and yet I’ve heard since they are not the best ROI- I’d love to hear your real world take on this too, please.

I NEED a plan of action - I have tried and failed miserably - and running out of time and money fast.

I saw in this thread you recommend Conversion ads - Optimized For Views-

Would you recommend the same for my situation - with A: Very little website traffic B: Limited Budget C: Limited real world experience and not wanting to throw money away - as I have so far

I would happily spend a grand a month on ads IF it brought back a healthy return after all my overheads.
So any advice you can give-

For your time answering this - please go here and choose a picture I’ll send to you Pritesh
Home Of The Original Times Square Spray Paint Artist - Spray Paint Art

All the best Simon

How many sales you are getting right now on your Shopify store without running ads?
Do you really need a shopify store to sell? Your Shopify store is very bad for conversion.

Welcome Simon, sorry I cannot give any technical advice, but all I can think of is how perfect do those pics would work as background for aaalll the lo-fi, synthwave etc. YT channel radios. They get someone that animates a few elements and boom they got the background. Not sure if you've seen them, just search something like synthwave radio. I wonder if you get in contact with them if they'd be interested in purchasing, especially the ones that change the background periodically per season or quarterly...

They would also kill as book covers, maybe publishing companies?? album covers, record labels??

I have had the store for 6 months now and NOTHING, ZERO! BM this is getting very frustrating for me, as I'm used to setting up shop in a tourist location and with minutes I have a happy crowd- a few minutes later they have a painting and walk away happy- this has been the simple formula for 25 years - when I 'work'.
Tried numerous methods to market, promote, and get traffic but nothing but head and heartache!
What is your suggestion, I'm open to advice my friend and appreciate it
Simon

My first question is, do you think it is wise to focus on growing and maintaining my Facebook Fan page?
No. Forget about your page, your "followers". They are not your customers.
Do you think that Facebook ads are an effective means of getting traffic to my site and ultimately sales?
It is, when done correctly.

Given your situation and limited time, i won't focus on all these ads thing.
You need 5 sales a day to survive. I will focus on the places where "Your" customer hangouts right now and are looking for the spray arts.
All those "course" will help you in long run and when your income is stable.

But before that you need to go from 0 to 1.

I see people looking for spray arts on Etsy like platforms. Did you try there and get some customers to stabilize your situation?

If you are where your customer hangouts, you can get some starting customers and from there you build up.

If you still want to try FB ads, i can help you with a good initial setup but having a bad website and zero sales, i won't recommend though. Because it's not just about Ads and traffic.

Hello Bella - just got back here - as been laser-focused on building a 21st-century website for my kid's project I've neglected (have a look here if interested Escaping The Apple BookStore and More!) I really appreciate your input - I will have a look into this Friday - as slammed until then- like the out of the box thinking- the Chicago skyline is always heavily requested when I paint in Vegas- hope all is good up there for you and your family Simon x

No. Forget about your page, your "followers". They are not your customers.

Hello Black Magician,
the very first thing I did at the start of COVID - apart from Facebook Live on the Strip every day - until FB started bombarding me with Boost requests and my viewing figures went from 14k to 300 when I didn't place an ad- then when I did nothing back - was to create an Etsy store SiScapesSprayArt on Etsy

I'm OBVIOUSLY doing something incorrectly here too, as only one sale!

Are there ways to promote on Etsy that I'm missing?

As for the bad - website ( I can take and appreciate constructive criticism :)) are you referring to Shopify in general or the way I have set up my shop within their platform?

Do you feel I should create one on WordPress - as that would give me better options and be cheaper too?

Simon

My engagement was great until the day I tried a boosted post 2 years ago.

Every day since, it's been less.

They operate like an addicition.

Get you lots of engagement at first when you're new.

Then hit you with the boost, or don't, but this is the point at which you now need to pay to play, because they're going to do it either way.

Gotta love Facebook.

Hi Amp -
can you imagine in my naivety, I was thinking after day three of the lockdown- "this is going well - 3 days I've gone from 300 views to 14K- must be as world-famous location that is completely deserted Las Vegas Strip outside the Bellagio - first time in history. People will be tuning in from all over the planet - I've set up my Etsy store (12 hours laser-focused) each day I'll be doubling the viewers as the alogrithm has picked me up- by the end of the month - MILLIONS of viewers and loyal fans !!!!!!" Duuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrr

Yes, Facebook is like an online heroin dealer- get them hooked and charge 'em high-

IF and when I get returns for my ad spend with them - I'd happily spend with them - but so far my ad money has gone down the drain.

Then read on this forum (form someone with 7.5Million ads spend -so think they might know a little!) that the info on my course about the type of ads to run was useless!

Fast forward 6 months and still not ONE sale online after 3 ad courses- ads.

Got to go back to the drawing board!
