Hey all,

I've been lurking on this forum for a couple of months since I read Unscripted . Loved it.
Loved it so much that I am for sure not ending up in my otherwise-to-be slowlane job... being a medical doctor.

Who am I:
  • 25 yo Belgian
  • Graduating as an MD in July 2019.
  • Would love to work as a physical and rehabilitation doctor and help patients get back on their feet and being able to walk again after having had excruciating back pain or hip replacements and such. To become such an MD, you'll have to complete a 5 year internship. This includes grueling work hours, being the bitch of your supervisors and making a fixed amount of money, while you make money for them. A pretty bad deal in my opinion.
  • Graduating in Sports Medicine aswell.
I'm thus completing my degrees in July. The last couple of months will be filled with last-minute tasks, but I'll just try and do them as efficiently as possible, while working on my side projects.

First Fastlane Project:
I've partnered with a friend of mine to make a course, specific for students in my hometown. That will be the first creative thing I'll be doing to tread the waters of earning money in my sleep.

Dream projects:
In the future I would love to make products for patients, doctors and institutes in order to provide better care. As well as creating products or applications for athletes or amateurs in order to achieve better results in their sport.

At the moment:
I've read a lot of Lex DeVille threads. Love your content, Lex! I'm starting my profile on Upwork today. My goal is to help 4 customers in May 2019.

See you around on the forum!

Kindest regards

Welcome, and stick around awhile! Use your MD training to make the fastlane opportunity even faster. You've already surmounted the barrier of entry with all that schooling! I did my doctorate and a two year fellowship and they have helped me do things faster, with a tiny bit more credibility. So, use your training to escape the slowlane. And keep reading up on here!

Hey Wiggly,

Are you also an MD? Interested in which field you work in right now and what doctorate degree you have. How did you end up doing a doctorate? :)

Kindest regards,
G.

Sounds awesome. Coaching high level athletes is something I also would love to do. Will start this summer by interning in different football clubs here in Belgium. The goal is to establish a small customer base, gain trust and expertise, and then grow and attract high level athletes.

How did you grow in your consultation/coaching business? Any tips for a beginner?

Sure, happy to help. My tips for getting started in coaching/consulting:

1. Build expertise. Read up on everything in that area. It doesn't have to be formal training. When I first got into sports psychology stuff, I read every book there was on it. Some were bad, some were good, and many were "ok." But I learned a lot along the way, which actually helped me get my fellowship and do well on my fellowship working with D1 college athletes. Ironically, once I had read everything, I decided to write my own book on it, and I got it published under the "For Dummies" brand. That helped my credibility with new clients. It also helped when I branched out into executive and high performance coaching with business folks, execs, etc.

2. Learn the art/science of coaching ANYONE for better performance. Many good reads out there on the topic. It's more art than science, and everybody needs to be coached in nuanced ways, so...learn! Books, podcasts, interview experts, ask questions, watch videos, movies, documentaries.

3. Volunteer your services. If I were starting out now, and wanted to work with athletes, I would go to a local high school and volunteer to work with their football/basketball teams. Then, when I had helped them get some results, I would ask for testimonials, referrals, etc. This can lead to paying gigs down the road.

If I wanted to get started in executive coaching/life coaching (what is that, anyway?!) or other sorts of coaching, I would do the same. Pick someone who is hungry for results and volunteer your services with them, with the caveat that you both will treat it as you would a regular coaching contract (3-6 month contract, mutually defined responsibilities, value of time and services, accessibility, etc). Also ask prior to starting for a testimonial and 3 solid referrals after services are completed.

Hope that helps. At the least, it's somewhere to start.
