Thank you everyone for the responses, I know what I have to do. The thread was more of a rant than anything else. Also the industry is NOT over saturated. Especially for quality work / if you can sell well. Im just simply getting sick of coding after 6 years, that's all.

Oh cool. No stress, my misunderstanding and my bad :) I hope this all works out for you. Also I enjoyed your rant! We all need a good vent now and then.

Hey Man

yeah, I know exactly the feeling. I hate everything what has to do with IT, literally. After all these years... I am still with it as it is the 'fastest' way to 'freedom' (or to asylum after a mental breakdown). Well, fastest to something it is...

Don't get this the wrong way. You explained it pretty clearly... Have you had a look at @Fox 's thread or other 'web design' threads here?

While I understand it might be annoying, after you wrote you hate it, to even suggest sticking to web design, it actually might be 'the easiest' path for you now to become independent and earn enough to invest in other activities. What do you think?

Do that I'm moving to your country, cost of living must be cheap there with such a small NMW :)
If you have income stream in $$$ it may be considered cheap, but if you earn minimal here you can barerly afford renting a bachelor apartment in capital. Well... most times you can't actually. :)

Isn't that the case in almost any country? :)

Never had opportunity to rent something like that in other countries so hard to say, although my friend in UK said he was doing quite good with minimal.

Yup I agree, it is one of the "easiest" ways in my opinion as well. Especially if you're good at it. And yes i saw @Fox thread and im also in his facebook group.

It sounds to me like a systemic problem. From what I read of other comments (sorry, no time to read them all), you were probably spending too much, and maybe that was in aid of starting your side gigs - don't know, don't care. The advice to get another job is good. While you're at it, do any kind of work you can to supplement the unemployment until you find a job that will pay. I'm talking shoveling snow, selling plasma... whatever.

Next, if your blog isn't monetized and your course? isn't selling, you've got something more to learn about marketing. You don't sound ready to even do that, and as a former real estate broker and investor myself, I can tell you you'll be in even worse trouble if you try to do that 1) without training and 2) by spending far more than you have now to get the training. I don't care what they tell you, you need some money to do anything in that field.

You're young yet, but you're running out of time to grow up. Hope the responses to your thread have been a wake-up call.

If it "paid just enough to support yourself", you probably suck with finances because that means you have zero savings. Making more money will make you spend more.

More Money, More Problem.

Hey everyone,

This is a bit of a rant thread, a bit of a help me out thread at the same time. - I'm 31 years old and have $5 in my account and have bills and rent to pay and living off of unemployment since I lost my slow lane job a month ago.

I'm a website developer by trade, but I also know marketing, SEO..etc - I also own a website development company with one client, and I also own a blog (attractsingles.com) (I was a dating coach also). I'm a crossroad on what to do with my life. I'm sick of this same pattern over and over again with being broke and having no money. It's pathetic.

Something has to change. As much as I love website development after 6 years im getting sick of it, which I why I started up my blog and now focusing more on digital courses / eBooks. But I feel that is very 2008. Also, I need more excitement in my life (Something new).

My goals:
1. Make money online
2. Use that money to invest in rental properties

I know none of you can direct my path for me, that has to be done on my own but some direction in certain ways would be great.

Chris
How about a change of scenery and moving from NY to somewhere more business friendly, lower cost of living, AND is a good place for buying rentals. Arizona or Florida come to mind as good places to go.

A new place might help you cut expenses while also focusing on your business without typical distractions. Plus, it could be exciting and rejuvenating. Just a thought

Hello Chris.

I read your story and I felt I was reading my story a few years ago. If you want to become rich, my advice is the following:
1. Get a job
2. Learn a high-income skill. Quit your job when your high-income skill makes you 2x what your job does.
3. Nurture a scalable business with the remaining money
4. Buy assets that can generate money automatically
5. Buy luxuries from the money those assets generate

Cheers bud!

I actually moved to San Diego about two years ago then came back to New York because I went broke(long story). I’m looking to go back to San Diego when I get the money.

San Diego is awesome! ...but ask yourself this. Is San Diego a good place to buy rental property? Does San Diego fit into my business goals?

It might fit into your goals. I don't know. These are just questions I would ask myself if I was in your situation. (which we were about 6 years ago deciding where we wanted to move and settle down)

I can always move to anyplace if I want to, but honestly I love San Diego, its gorgeous there on the west coast. Plus rental properties are a pretty long time away, im taking it one step at a time.

It paid just enough at $45,000 a year to support my self. And yup, that's my exact plan, been looking for another job since I lost that last job.

Why aren’t you on Upwork and how good a web developer are you? Like amazing or entry or 4 years experience?

I was once in a similar situation. A few years back I was living on my own, trying to make it in real estate. I had my app business on the side but it wasn't paying all the bills (income of like $1200 a month, maybe). I was $40k in credit card debt and slowly going through my savings. One night, I went to bed at 2am after working all day and for 30 minutes I tossed and turned, I couldn't sleep. I remember, I said to myself, "I literally can't afford to sleep."

I got back up and started working. At that point I focused 100% on my app business because it was my only source of income and I knew there was high potential. 12, 14 or more hours a day, 6 or 7 days a week. I ended up doing around $225k that year, and I had very little overhead.

I did great for a few years on that, then let it go when I partnered on a startup. Sank over $100k on that which pretty much flopped. Now I am back in a similar situation but working on new stuff. I think Richard Branson said it, business opportunities are like a bus route, a new one comes every 15 minutes.

I still have my app business and I'm rebuilding it, working on a deal that could be huge, 6 to 7 figures a year. But as you're probably aware, development stuff can be slow. Also working on a new project on the side. I may post a thread documenting that process as well.

This sounds, without me over thinking it, like a really nice outline of a 10 year plan.

Sounds a bit slow lane though.
