I'd guess a mixture between

1. Constantly being in the spotlight. A small portion of what most of us say is BS (and usually gets ignored besides the occasional raised eyebrow), but if you're someone like Elon it'll be picked up. And being active in media give him an even lower inhibition about sharing his thoughts (so his own filter gets lower). One of our best professors warned us that a lot of the time he constantly spoke all day, which made him every once in a while share thoughts we should all beware and take it with a grain of salt (was very entertaining tho).

2. Being in power can give several of the same noticeable symptoms as brain damage, with less inhibition and more antisocial behaviour

I think it is fair to say that Musk's eccentric behaviour is part of Tesla's marketing. How many people learn of Tesla through something Musk has done? Power has probably gone to his head though, which is understandable given he is a billionaire who spends his time doing what he thinks is virtuous things to help others, but it seems he definitely needs to be put in his place. Although I guess the counter to that would be that he got to that position so he must be doing something right.

This whole article is such a microcosm of much of society.

Yea, Elon Musk will do to help the world in ONE DAY than most of these haters will do in their entire lives. But it's OK, because he's one of the lucky billionaires who isn't paying their "fair share."

With Elon trying to help the boys in the cave in Thailand, I saw someone trying to criticise him and say what he was doing is wrong because it's a white American trying to save the day (he's South African). A billionaire does nothing for society they're called greedy. When a billionaire tries to help solve a humanitarian issue they gets called racist. You just cannot win these days with some people.

Lately Elon Musk has been making some odd comments and making eyebrows rise.

From the sales conference call some weeks ago where he made some bizarre comments, to Twitter barbs, to this Thai cave rescue thing and calling some critic a PEDO, his comments are starting to make people wonder. Lately he's been sounding more like Trump and not unlike any other corporate figure of a publicly traded company.

Elon Musk tweets he'll "bet ya a signed dollar" that Thai cave rescuer is a "pedo"

5 outrageous Elon Musk moments from the bizarre Tesla call

I'm sure Nikola Tesla was considered an odd-ball in his day and age, so is this just Elon being Elon?

Is this his eccentricity or do you think something else is going on?

A billionaire with FU money saying FU?

Unpopular opinion: He's always seemed on the edge of brilliance & insanity to me.

I don't think this is that new.

That said, he is under a ton of pressure due to Tesla's financial performance, and the only thing holding the company up is belief in his genius.

That plus the long hours on 3 companies could get to anybody.

He might want to tweet less, or at least wait a half hour before sending them.

I'd say that's on point. If he wasn't pursuing these projects, he'd probably be trolling on 4chan or reddit.

Just look at the way the TSLA models are named. S 3 X. He couldn't grab E, b/c Ford has the rights. And what's the next model he's planning? Y

Check out the video he posted on his Twitter. Meme-ing hard on short sellers.

That's why people like him. Doesn't take himself too seriously.

I would say Elon is past the stage of Eccentric and breaking out of the masses as a billionaire. I don't feel he needs to break out of anything.
Definition of Eccentric
a : deviating from conventional or accepted usage or conduct especially in odd or whimsical ways
  • an eccentric millionaire
I would imagine he has a a lot of stress in his position. In my research when someone is in stress the cognitive thinking can skip letters when writing, or when you're in a nervous position where you might be in front of audience or your character or reputation is on the line, might no communicate effectively. It's kind of like a stutter when you speak. It's hard to say what's going on behind the scenes in his life, what kind of pressures, stress, who is at stake where money is concerned, investors, partners, or what's on the line. The information may be strained due to contracts or what should be said or not said legally.

If you have something on your mind and faced with certain questions, obviously he may be avoiding certain discussions. Perhaps as well feeling because in his position as a Billionaire, he doesn't have to answer to anyone in the world because he's earned his place to be where he is in life.

It's hard to say how his physical health is as well. I know being on the top can give a lot of physical stress that affects various parts of the body.

Seems more like he doesn't want to bother with questions anyone can ask from Google or You Tube. The philosophy of money is time and time is money, and you're wasting my time if you don't have important questions to ask.

No I'm not short TSLA stock but this insanity of him making comments for the sake of making comments to influence stock price has got to stop.

I thought I was the only one who thought it was a little sketchy, especially when you're known to have a disdain for traders who are short your company.

Tesla’s Elon Musk just invited a big lawsuit

If he's really taking it private, he kind of shot himself in the foot by inviting a big jump in stock price.

He just really really hates shorts, I think.

In this case, I think Elon CERTAINLY knew what he was doing, and checked with legal before posting it. I think he knew there would be lawsuits, but decided to do it anyway & I expect he will follow through with taking it private as that minimizes any consequences. Good for him!

I'm pretty sure this is just Elon being Elon. The problem is how we're perceiving it.

The media and general public as idolized Elon as being this super-genius humanitarian figure. They made it out that he was a saint and could do no wrong.

And this is exactly the problem when anyone is idolized.

He's a person like you and I. He has bad days. The public only sees an aspect of the real him. The real him is a complex person. But when he says and does some things that people don't like, that can get blown up and make him seem like something he's not.

Look at his actions. This is a guy with enough ego to believe he can start two multi-billion dollar companies at the same time; one industry completely new, the other tried and failed over and over again. What type of guy do you think he would have to be to attempt that?

Why does this have to be called `ego` with a negative connotation, rather than `confidence` with a positive one?

Never intended "ego" to be positive or negative. It just is what it is.

Well let's not pretend those record number of shorts aren't actively trying to do the same. AKA, the people who wish your company to go bankrupt for their own gain. Fight fire with fire.

Either that, or TSLA is screwed and this is the most elaborate pot joke to go out in a blaze of glory.

I don't know what's real anymore.

A confident hard worker who goes after what he wants.

Successful people/geniuses having big egos is nothing new in history.

Galileo keeps telling everyone that the sun is the center and Earth revolves around it. Not the other way around. Who does this guy think he is? Let's throw him in jail.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. starting protests in the South. Let's throw him in jail.

These 13 colonies on the other side of the Atlantic want to start their own country. They think they can get away from doing this?

LOL, apparently he was tripping on acid when he tweeted. So much for my thinking that he had run this by Legal!

FWIW, I still think any damage from this is minimal & he tries to go through with it.

Or...ok now follow this.

He doesn't have funds secured, but still wants to take it private.

The board would never have approved it.

But now since it's a legal liability to deny approval, it gives Musk the upper hand.

Latest news is he's taking Ambien to sleep.
I won't mention the whistleblower rumours but they are devastating if any truth in them. I hope he recovers from all this shit happening, seems like a lot of bad stuff being reported by the media recently. Don't let the bastards get you down Mister Musk.

His new girlfriend is Grimes. She sleeps on average 4 hours a day.

I actually met her before at comic book shop in Pike Place Market, Seattle Washingon. She was sitting down criss cross applesauce reading Manga/anime graphic novels. Creative type. Tends to keep to herself but one of the friendliest people you'll ever meet.

Good question.

Yeah I was wondering what was up with Elon, I mean maybe he was just stressed out and took it out on someone. We all have our moments but when its someone like him, and in his position(s), well...scrutiny, pressure and questions naturally arise.

Maybe with his work-rate, compounded stress and lack of rest, he just happened to let loose.

Either way, I still want a Tesla :)

So he is 47 years old. In this video he looks much much older. If it's because of the stress, then it's pretty scary what it can do to you.

If Elon Musk manages to enable us to live on Mars, then we will just bring the same problems we have on earth to Mars.

I don't think he is solving humanities biggest problems. Humanity's biggest problem is the way we think/our consciousness. The outside world reflects our inside world.

Why go to Mars if we can prevent ourselves from destroying planet earth?

Just wanted to my share my opinion.
