It took me 28 years to realise I'm a miserable bastard over this shitty Irish climate so I've decided that I'm going to move to Spain in a few months to the glorious heat and sunshine that I crave. I'm currently learning Spanish and hoping to set up a landscaping or cleaning company when I'm over there (my first real business venture?).

Has anyone else changed country/state and reaped the benefits or was it a big mistake?

I believe changing ones environment(with the intention to live and work, not vacation) is one of the best ways to grow as an individual. It will force you to adapt and evolve to a new system. And learning the Spanish language will open new opportunities, both socially and economically, it's the second most spoken language in the world, don't hesitate,, take the plunge!

I am sure there are members here who have.

Moving country, will change your environment, and open your eyes. The world is so global. The different experiences, people and cultures you will encounter will hopefully broaden your perspective on life.

Learning another language is a great plus to have.

As for myself, I've always been on the move. As I write this to you, I am currently enjoying the warm 'summer' of the UK!

It will definitely be a good move. Either way, you'll learn a lot.

All the best.

i have moved from toronto to vancouver on a whim, closed my eyes and thought.. if i have millions of dollars where do i go? boom, booked a 1 way flight not caring about consequences, its been one of the best decisions ive made, environment is a big part of your happiness, and weather is crucial.. seasonal depression IS A REAL THING.

i feel much better being by the beach or mountains on a beautiful sunny day, yet on a gloomy rainy day i feel off/down

also dont hope to start a business, just do it. go knock on doors today / tomorrow. do not procrastinate this, it is extremely easy to get started in this industry & learn to enjoy rejection when pitching.

that's why you'll find me on the beach somewhere most of the times :p

no seasonal depression there.

LOL! What an intro. And I can empathize with your sentiment.

I lived in Virginia for...way too long.
I was constantly plotting how to escape from that place, and I did - and I'm not going back.
Perhaps a week to see my family, then I'm out!

I currently live in Shanghai, China - and even though this place has it's problems, it's the best decision I've ever made.
I came here because of a job. I've been here for 7 months and have adjusted beautifully.
The thing I love about it here, the most, is that I've grown SO QUICKLY and that there is opportunity here, everywhere!

I was playing in the small leagues in Virginia, but I was still practicing. I was still perfecting.
Here in Shanghai, my practices (and my perspective) coupled with the opportunity has lead to SO MANY new interactions with people, job opportunities, and a chance for me to REALLY catapult myself into the world - unabashedly.

Though I will say Virginia has trained me for a lot here, in it's own way (i.e., I get stared at here a lot).

Just be ready to adapt. Be ready to let things go and "lean in". Be ready to be open to new possibilities and people.

Before moving over, find out a few things:
  1. What are the laws in starting a business as a foreigner (i.e., as an expat, to start a business the process is LONG and HARD)?
  2. What items is the country lacking, that you really need (i.e., they don't sell tampons in Shanghai)?
  3. Visit there for a few weeks/months, to get a GOOD lay of the land and culture - so things aren't a complete shock?
  4. Is there absolutely anyone you know who lives in Spain? That can help you adjust QUICKLY.
  5. Where do all the other expats live? Expats usually are a tight knit group, where when we see each other, there's an unspoken thought that, "We're in this together"! Because you are.
There are more questions, but I'm sure you get it.

As far as starting a cleaning business - check out THIS GUY who started a local cleaning business that makes 7-figures. He goes into the EXACT steps in how to do it. It's 100% repeatable, in any country ;)

Good luck!

I knew the word 'hope' would give me some abuse on here haha. Well I'm not sure what part of Spain I'm moving to yet and I don't know if the part I'm moving to has a need for one of the companies I want to set up. I started doing removals here where I am but since I don't want to stay here much longer I don't want to get too into it. If you were moving to a different country what would you be doing right now if you were me?

Hey thanks for the link that's some great info. For now I'm still scouting out where abouts I'll move to in Spain. I have no idea yet which part I'll move to or if there is a need for my business plans but I'm positive once I get there I can find something and start it.

Scout long and hard before you move.
I was lucky that I moved to Shanghai vs. other cities in China. It's VERY convenient here for an English-only speaker.
Seriously, try to make sure that you have all the amenities you need when you move there. And if they don't have certain items, make sure you can get them easily shipped to you by Amazon or other means.

It's not easy to get items shipped in from outside of China.
Their mailing system, outgoing and ingoing is a hassle.

One thing I did, as soon as I got here - kind of out of habit, I walked around and looked at what was lacking here.
Where could I come in and offer a service or a product?
How could I differentiate myself from the crowd?

And it was very easy to see in the first few weeks after I got here.
Now I'm looking to do a side business, along with my main job.

If you could visit your destinations - stay in an AirBnB for a week - before moving, just so you can do recon with boots on the ground, that may help with your decision process. I know you want to escape Ireland, but recon can be fun before the big move. And also, it's a lot less intimidating.

I got a similar affect by totally moving my furniture around to shake things up a bit. I know it seems like a silly little inconsequential thing but it helped me. I live in a good climate area though so I can't imagine what it would be like to live in a cold place but perhaps go for a holiday/vacation for a few weeks and maybe that'll thaw you out enough for your brain to start "working" again, get a fresh perspective and maybe find some needs but the language barrier might hurt you more than you think. Seems like while you're in this vulnerable state you should stack thing in your favour and perhaps exercise a little caution in case you introduce new problem that make you shiver for different reasons.

yes this is called " hope"

there is nothing wrong with " hope "

religions, politics, copywritings, propaganda, relationship etc.

all these things work thanks to this word " hope"

hope is one the most important word of the english langage, if not the most important

we don't elect politicians on results

but on hope

Go wherever you feel like you need to go. Go where you want - life is short.

If you are moving because you feel like it is a necessary step to achieve some sort of change you've been looking for, be careful. Changing your environment can be powerful, but it can also be a mental trap. At least it has been for me, anyway.

If you are currently being dragged down by your environment, feeling unmotivated etc, and assign some great motivation to environmental change (i.e. "if only I lived here I could do x, y, and z!) then your issue is probably more than environmental.

Anyway, just speaking from my personal experience. But if you want to go live somewhere, that's reason enough to just up and move. Like I said, life is short.

I know exactly what you mean, im in Ireland myself. This winter has been particularly depressing, longest winter and darkest ever on record apparently. Funny you mention spain because I was only looking at the price of rent over there recently on a spanish property rental website and its very reasonable in comparison to Ireland. Im considering making the move over to live for six months or more of the year once I can get a location independent business off the ground...

I moved for 3 months and didnt like it. I found the economy over there isnt great and to set up a business legally I had to pay 300 euro a month. The wages are very poor too compared to us here. I didnt feel confident over there and I was struggling with spanish. Dont let that turn you off moving, I just felt like I was sick of moving countries too. I lived in Australia, England and Spain and I said F*ck it I am settling down and starting a business in Ireland. I started it 5 weeks ago. Its a power washing and window cleaning business. Not doing too bad at the moment, Im making 1000 to 1500 a week, not breaking any records yet but it beats working in a dead a$$ job going nowhere.
Have you a business or are you just thinking about starting?

Well at least you took action and tried it out! 1000 to 1500 a week is a great start man...well done! Yeah im in the process of getting a home cleaning business off the ground alongside the web design I do. Almost finished reading unscripted and it has really motivated me to make a bust because I crave autonomy!
