I've been a wantrepreneur for years! I've always talked the talk and never taken action. I've spent YEARS researching and planning. I read through Vilox's forum on breaking through call reluctance. I was instantly inspired!

I've been terrified to pick up the phone for years, I constantly plan and plan and never execute. After reading his post I'm going to do it, I'm going to break through my fears once and for all!

I'm going to make 1,000 dials to people that requested information on making more money from home. I'm going to find out if they're serious, then I will send them to a 10 minute business overview. I will also setup a follow up time to get back with them the next day.

I know that Network Marketing isn't fastlane, but it's the easiest way for me to start smashing through all my fears of sales. I will use this as a vehicle to start building up my communication skills and my leadership abilities. I read in the post "is this fastlane" that it doesn't have to line up with every bullet point, that it's all about execution and massive action and just going for it! That's what I'm going to do!

I will start tomorrow, my goal is to make a minimum of 50-100 dials / day. I will post my results and what experiences I have gained, good and bad.

Excited for you man! Get in there and just start dialing.

You're going to botch some calls. Thats fine.
You're going to go in with the script, and go offroad at some point. Thats fine also.

Just KEEP DIALING. Thats the key here. Looking forward to seeing how you do.

Just do it! You’ll be great! Remember they’re only people and you need to mess up / fail some calls to learn. Learn to chuckle at and move on from your mistakes rather than beat yourself up. I had to teach myself to cold call, I’m by no means an amazing seller but I’m getting better all the time. Once you push yourself out of your comfort zone you’ll feel exhilarated. Go get em ;)

I will start tomorrow,

Let me guess. You've been saying that for years?

I know the feeling, man. My whole body was literally shaking the first sales call I made and the person cussed me out.

Now, I can practically do it in my sleep after doing it for 40 hours a day for 3 months.

The first day will suck. You'll get used to it fast though.

I'll also add if you have a good product, then it makes selling so much easier. The product I sold was something I believed had value, so I wanted to sell it.

If you know the MLM stuff you're selling is BS (which you should know since you're on this forum), then it (subconsciously) might make it harder for you to sell it.

What a day!! I started off by sleeping in until 9 am, I couldn't get out of bed knowing I had to make 50 dials. I almost said F*** it and then I remembered about my accountability post.

I sat in front of my computer for about an hour making multiple excuses of why I can't call yet, my script sucks.. I should tweak my business overview a little more, excuse, excuse, excuse!

I DID IT!! The first two live answers, I got hung up on haha! I almost quit, but there is no way I'm going to look like a fool quitting the very first day of my accountability!

Total dials: 50 # voicemails: 25 #live answers: 9 #Sent to Info: 5
I use phone burner so it automatically leaves a voicemail and sends an e-mail to them.

Lessons learned for the day:
1) I need to have a short pitch when people ask "What is it" that generates curiosity, and gives them enough info, but not so much they don't need to check out my business overview.
2) I need to write down some rapport questions when people don't want to instantly get off the phone taking my information. (Find out a little about what they're looking for, what they do for a living etc)
3) I can't pause after asking my intro, whenever I pause they start asking a lot of questions and try taking over the call.

Overall I'm STOKED. Am I going to have any results from my calls? Probably not. Did I make 50 dials for the first time in my life? HELL YES.

@Crexty : Thank you so much for the motivation! Everything you gave me a heads up about definitely happened, it was great having an idea going into it, so thank you!!

@Sprocket - Thank you! That's great to hear that you're having some success with cold calling, keep it up!

@Dunkafelics - I LOVED your post! I was supposed to be calling by 7-8 am at the latest. You are absolutely correct, where the hell are you Joe!? Thanks for the accountability :)

@SquatchMan - You have no idea how many "tomorrows" I've gone through ;) I didn't get cursed out today, so I guess things went well! You're going to have to give me your secret, how do you squeeze in 40 hours a day to call, that's IMPRESSIVE.

I completely agree that you need to have some belief in what you're selling. I've actually been taking this product for 2 years now and I love it. It's an amazing product that is actually cost effective compared to similar things you buy at the store without all the sugar and toxic ingredients.

I will definitely start looking at different things to sell once I get over the fear, but right now I just need to start taking action.

You guys have helped me so much already, thank you for everything!!!

I'm by no means an expert, but recently I've had to start cold calling and The Way of the Wolf by Jordan Belfort gives you a really solid foundation (the audiobook).

As I said, I'm not very wise on the topic, but this helped me really fast to get an idea and a structure to work with, instead of just babbling on the phone.

It's like working out, if you have a workout plan is way easier to get started/improve, instead of trying everything from zero.

Personally I think the guy is a goddamm genius, but I don't have the experience to back up this affirmation (I've already gotten some positive results though).

Hey Joe,

Love the fact that you admitted your procrastination on this - hopefully, you can continue the forward motion.

Just remember Newton's first law of motion- sometimes referred to as the law of inertia. An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Grant Cardone's Millions on the Phone has helped me in my cold calling.

Heres the link to his PDF
https://trello-attachments.s3.amazo...7cbec9d62ce63/MillionsOnThePhone-GC-EBOOK.pdf

Good luck

@J.Sark Thank you! I will definitely look Jordan up. I've seen his name pop up a few times on this forum.

@IamCJTurner I will write that down and put it by my computer, hopefully it helps me next time I want to slack and skip my calls.
I will go read that now, thank you so much!

DAY 2 -- COMPLETE

It wasn't nearly as bad as yesterday! I started dialing by 8 am (Only slept in an hour this time LOL)

*Dials - 51 (Had to break my record) *Live answers = 17 * Sent to Info = 8 *Voicemail = 22
Follow up calls from yesterday - 1 firm NO (the rest didn't answer/didn't look yet)
GOAL- 101/1000 completed.

Lessons I learned for the day
1) I need a follow up script, I was ALL over the place!
2) I need to confirm they're going to check out the info and try following up the same day. I tell them I will follow up the next day as an excuse so I can be done with calls/follow ups sooner. I need to take responsibility and man up!
3) The #1 lesson I learned today: DO NOT STOP MAKING DIALS ONCE YOU START. I made 33 calls and decided I would take a quick break and listen to some music. It was VERY hard to start making dials after I took a 10 minute break.

I'm currently using a script that sends people directly to the info (no probing questions) after 500 dials I'm going to switch to a script that probes and asks a little more questions on the initial call. I've heard people use both scripts successfully, so I will test and see if it has a higher follow up ratio asking more questions on the initial call.

It feels AMAZING taking action. I'm not going to lie, it's hard to stop the negative self talk. It's so easy to get into the mental mind f*** that I'm always going to suck at it, I'm never going to make a sale, I'm wasting peoples time, why should they listen to someone that hasn't had results, blah blah blah. I'm not going to let my ego stop me this time!

Thanks, it feels so amazing to push through my fears and just take action. The rest of the week I'm going to keep focusing on making a minimum of 50 dials and focusing on improving my results day by day.

The first day I was calling I was making a pause during my intro, today I made sure not to pause, (even though I feel like I should lol) and I didn't have a SINGLE rejection like yesterday. People were WAY more receptive to what I had to say and I didn't have nearly as many questions.

Awesome Joe, it sounds like you are going in the right direction.

1) You do indeed need a follow-up script.
Depending on what type of product you sell, will depend on how long the sales process is.
I have sold products that have short vs long processes. However, the better you get - the less call you have to make for the desired result.

2) Be very careful about this because most people wont actually read your email that you said you will send. Once you are speaking with the prospect, they will feel uncomfortable that they havnt read it and most will lie. If you are going to call, arrange a phone meeting (don't call it an appointment) for a specific time to go over some more information but when you catch up with them again, discuss the contents in the email, dont ask them if they had read it.

3) Exactly, uninterrupted called work best.

Go with your flow man, my cold calls - I speak calmly and I leave spaces for pauses - especially if I am stumped. Most aim for a slick pitch but I like to give the prospects the feeling that I have considered what they have said.

REMEMBER.YOU.WILL.GET.BETTER

If you wanted to jump on a call with me, I would be more than happy to give you some pointers.
Dont worry, I dont sell any courses or anything - just happy to help out :)

Today was rough! I don't know why but I was DREADING making dials. Once I started it was a breeze!

Today - 50 dials made Voice Mail = 24 Live Answers = 20 Sent to Info = 10
Total Dials: 151/1000
My follow up calls didn't produce any results, most people didn't answer.

Lessons I learned today
1) Don't waste time on people that have low energy and just want to argue. They completely drain your energy and they're not worth it. NEXT
2) If people are already involved in something ask them if you can follow up with them in 6 months to see how everything is going for them.
3) I need to make sure I start waking up earlier, even if I'm dreading making calls. Whenever I get stressed and overwhelmed I sleep in.

@IamCJTurner

Thanks for the feedback! I found a follow up script that I can use, so I'm excited to see how that goes.

Point #2: That's very interesting, I didn't think about that! I'm sending them a 13 minute "Business Overview" that they can watch. I'm going to start asking them on the initial call if they have 13 minutes to watch it now, and if so setup a follow up call in 15 minutes. I feel like that would get people to take action and actually watch it.

#3 ) I definitely need to work on pausing, it's so hard not to blow through the script! I'm not looking to do a slick script, I'm trying to be as natural as possible so I don't come across as a salesman.

I would love to chat with you after I make my 1,000 dials :) Until I make a thousand dials I'm trying not to add more information or overthink anything because I tend to over complicate and not take any action. My whole goal right now is to get comfortable on the phone, then I will really start figuring out how to improve.

Thank you so much for your tips!

Joe! You're doing it! I'm so happy to come back and see that you didn't just make a post and walk away from it, to never see it again like most people. You are ahead of the game. There are so many people in the world right now saying, "I'm going to start calling tomorrow" or "I have to do this first" or whatever it is.

Even I, used to be one of those people. Literally, if you commit to calling every day for a couple months. You will become comfortable on the phone. Its all about action.

I still cold call for one of my companies, and I have a team that does it for another. I usually am dialing between 8AM-11AM each morning. Here are some things that have helped me:

1. Wake up on time (Waking up late will make you say, ahhh guess i have to start tomorrow). Wake up and immediately drink a glass of water (this will wake you up).

2. Read/watch or listen to some sort of cold calling/sales/persuasion stuff every morning before you start calling. I like Grant Cardone, Chet Holmes, Jordan Belfort..

3. Listen to some music that pumps you up or look at things that get you motivated.

4. Go over your script every time

5. start dialing (and don't stop until you have reached your # of calls per day your looking to hit)

Some days, you are going to get this weird feeling in your stomach when you wake up or when you are about to start calling. Just forget that and keep going, that is from the times you were rejected or the anxiety of calling. I've done quite a few calls now and I still get it sometimes.

Good job man!

It looks like your doing great,

Definitely be punctual about waking up early. That needs to be a habit.

Also, make your bed every single day. You want to start with completing a couple simple task every morning.

Here's my two sense on some cold calling techniques

My new favorite tip is to get a customer to say No right off the bat it makes them feel like they have the control over the conversation.

How to give the person an opportunity to say No.

A lot cold calling Guru's say you never want to get a No. I found out through trial and error this is bullshit. The Gurus say you want an, Yes, Yes, and Yes flow. I use to think that too. Then I just started asking people curiosity questions, For example, Hey is this a good time for you to talk? As you can imagine most people will say No. Thus giving the person what they think is control over the conversation immediately. I then use a Script to turn that into value for the customer.

I use a couple of techniques as well one of my other favorites is labeling & Mirroring

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Objections

I usually try to get two to three objections immediately out of the way. There only like 7 total objections.

  1. The Brush-Off - Send me some Info.

  2. Competition - We have a guy who does that.

  3. Procrastination - Call me back In Next Month.

  4. Budget - That's just too expensive right now. Or Let me talk with my wife my business partner etc.

  5. Followup - Setting up another Call or appointment.

  6. Avoidance - Not answer your calls, emails, or text.

  7. The Gatekeeper - Well My tip is to sell the gatekeeper. Remember there name make them feel important.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Labeling

Using these in the script will help Validate someone's emotion by acknowledging it.

It sounds like _______________

It seems like _______________

It looks like _______________

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Mirroring

Repeating the last (or critical) 3 words.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

How to give the person an opportunity to say No.

Let's say for example you are a computer Specialist you help small business fix their slow computers.

You are calling the business owner his name is John.

Hey John,

My Name is Mack, I'm a Computer Specialist at Macks Computer Company, After I state who I am and who I work for I give them a second to process. John will probably mumble something. I then ask if now would be a good time to talk? Notice no value has been giving no value has been lost. The person who you just called probably doesn't even remember your name. At this point, there is no reason for you to say you do XYZ.

Most people say something along the lines of no not really. I'll reply John, It sounds like now, not really a great time to talk -- Labeling and Mirroring. when would be a better time this week morning or afternoon? Let them answer, Most people will give some excuse for I’m busy it's hard to know Objection(5). Or they’ll be like I'm not interested -Objection (5). At this point, they still probably don't know your name or what you do.

If they stated that there not interested. I would ask Hey real quick Before I hang up is your computer had any issues lately such as being slow or not loading websites?

This is a last attempt to generate interest.

If they say No it's okay. You're not trying to turn No into Yes’s

Back to the script: the morning or afternoon, Let's say John says morning, I'll be like great can I pencil in 8:45 Tomorrow Friday the 23rd? Use exact time and date. Generally, they will say yes. Now, this is important if you were to hang up 9/10 there not going to pick up. Why would someone pick up who doesn’t know your name or what you do. So this is where I start taking control over the conversation. I’ll be like oh hey real quick before I hang up John, has your computer been sluggish or slow lately?

Now that there more comfortable they will be more likely to open up. John, may say something like this yes it's been very slow lately it takes forever to load websites and programs. It keeps telling me that I need to update windows and pay for this program called WinRAR.

Then I'll mirror and label what they just told me (Remember Mirroring is repeating that last three critical things they said.)

John, "it seems like" you're having problems with slow Websites programs and windows.

(Mentally John will be like Yes this guy gets it.)

I will follow up with two to three other questions about their business. For example how many computers they have. Is it Mac or PC. What is there biggest pain points using their computers? I call these the value questions, save these for later. I like to have my biggest questions answered. I save these questions later for when I'm negotiating the deal.

Then I go for the Lock-In.

Lock-In is one of the most critical parts of the call. It allows you get the follow-up meeting or call.

Here are just two rough examples:

1. John, it was great speaking with you. It sounds like your having a rough time with problems XYZ. I'll give you a call tomorrow at 8:45 am so we can get this all sorted out. Any reason you wouldn't be able to speak? - This is called a lock-in

2. John, it seems like you need some immediate help with your issues XYZ. Instead of a call tomorrow I would love to stop by. We offer a free diagnosis for your computer. - This is also the lock-In because your now meeting in person.

Hope this helps.

How so you propose getting around the do not call list?

I get at least 3 calls every day from someone selling something. I'm getting annoyed to the point of researching how to sue them.

My phone is not there to be used as their marketing tool.

DAY 4 : Complete!
Dials : 50 Sent to info = 4 Voicemails = 25
Total Dials: 201

The dials are getting WAY easier to make. It's a great feeling, now I'm starting to get frustrated at the lack of results I'm getting, which is a GREAT problem! Before I was so scared to even think about making dials, now I'm slowly getting over the fear and I am starting to shift my mentality to creating results!

So far my follow ups have been VERY disappointing. The few people that answer haven't looked at the info and over half of them say they couldn't find the e-mail.

LESSONS for the day

1) I HAVE to start setting up and confirming follow up times.
Right now I'm still just sending them the information and telling them I will call them back in the morning.

2) I'm going to stop calling them to "confirm" their info. Instead I'm going to call to give them a heads up that I will be sending them the information they requested. I will then ask them if it would be easier if I sent the information VIA text or E-mail.

-I feel like sending them the information VIA text would cut down the steps they need to take to view my information and it would also make sure the information isn't going to their spam folder.
-They would also see my text throughout the day as a reminder to take a look at it :D

@Crexty Thank you very much! I really appreciate the support. I wrote down your 5 points and I will definitely start applying them. I think point #1 is key, whenever I don't get out of bed on time I do exactly what you said, eh I guess I should just put it off until tomorrow since I got up late LOL

It's great to see that you're still making dials yourself, I've read so many places that cold calling is dead, it's good to see people are still having results. Do you call an X amount of dials per day or base it off of X confirmed follow ups?
______________________________________________________________________________

@Scuur WOW! I am blown away by this incredible information, I love the psychology behind everything that you say and do. I'm going to have to read your post multiple times to really process everything you just posted.

I love how you get rid of the objections in the beginning of the call and make them feel like they're in complete control, you definitely gave me a few ideas that I'm going to start implementing.

So many nuggets, THANK YOU!

I completely understand how frustrating it would be receiving multiple calls per day.

I am calling people that filled out a form online, indicating they are looking to create some extra money from home. I don't have to worry about the DNCL because they specifically requested a call & more info.

I worked as a telemarketer. All our leads were opt-in and we still needed a telemarketing license. Just depends on the state.

@Real Deal Denver Tell them: "Please add me to your internal Do Not Call list." if they keep calling you, then you can report them to the FCC and collect a reward. Legit telemarketing companies are really nervous about the FCC shutting them down or getting a huge fine, so they are extremely compliant.

Your number probably got opted into some kind of list.

I’m so impressed at your dedication and commitment, well done you!

How are you tracking your calls to make sure you keep on top of call backs, log customer information, notes, points of interest etc? I’ve dabbled with some free “crm” tools but honestly find good old spreadsheeets best so far... I’m considering teaching myself access to build a bespoke crm. So much to learn!

I was pretty exhausted when I wrote that last night. I was able to Surf all day because of the Fastlane. I would highly recommend texting the info. Texts have a 99% open rate. Make sure that everything is mobile optimized though otherwise, you're shooting yourself in the foot. Doing the Lock-In is very important. I also like to pause for a couple of seconds after I say it if I don't like there first answer they give.

I did cold calling for years.

THE tool that helped me most was creating a call tree.

Back when I was a financial advisor (*ducks rotten tomatoes*) I discovered a book called The Magic List for Financial Advisors.

The biggest thing I got from the book is the file I just attached.

The point: instead of having a “script,” use a call tree similar to what’s attached.

Getting the same objection over and over? Come up with an answer and add it to the tree.

Hope that’s helpful.

Thank you!

I am using a contact manager called "The Mighty Giant" It has a calendar, contact folders and gives me a website as well.

It only costs 12 dollars a month, I love it because it's VERY simple and cost effective.

Are you cold calling? How is it going for you?

That is very helpful, I will definitely create a "call tree"
I love how it simplifies everything and overtime with more experience you can have almost EVERY objection with an answer and a path to take.
BRILLIANT!

Thanks a lot!!

I've always wanted to learn how to surf, it looks extremely fun! I will send them the information VIA text starting monday, I think it will be WAY more effective!

I'm also going to start qualifying people on the initial call. I'm getting overwhelmed with a TON of followups, it would be fine if I knew they were quality individuals, but 3/4 of the people I send info to sound like they have very low energy and they're not people I would want to work with.

Thanks for all the tips!
