Hello everyone!

I'm a computer programmer (software & web), graphic designer, electrical engineer (hobby/programming ATMEL microchips). I started to learn programming when I was around 7 years old and it has been one of my passions ever since.

Feeling drained, unfulfilled and betrayed I left a very well paid job to fully focus on my biggest dream - to create a software development company, which will be known for it's superior quality and products.

Currently I'm so out of my comfort zone as I've never been in my life. Not going to go into detail, times are really hard, but all the paths have guided me down the same road over and over again. This time there's no turning back. I'm born to do this, life has given me way too many hints.

Hopefully within month from now, I will have successfully launched my first product, the nightmare will end and a new chapter can finally begin.

Just thinking about running the company, making own decisions, leading the team, getting customer feedback, creating new products etc.. puts butterflies in my stomach. It would be truly a dream come true.

I'm looking forward to learn as much as possible, form a new business relationships and hopefully contribute something of a value back to the community.

Feel free to ask me any tech questions, I'm always happy to help!

Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your time.

Software development can be very mentally taxing. I personally always hit the wall when I spend hours debugging and fixing. When I'm creative and architecting my energy is through the roof. When I'm fixing for days and weeks I just want to jump of the roof.

Good luck with your idea!!

welcome to the forum; have you thought about what specifically you will be specializing in (what niche, industry, type of products you intend to serve) etc. I would factor all of that very closely, because as you know the software industry changes by the millisecond.

Oh yeah, a lot hair lost over the years. Nice to meet a fellow programmer!

Thank you!

Thank you for the advice!

The first application is personalization/entertainment related. I believe that the app is 'safe for long term' because it modifies/personalizes the elements which are consistent through out all the devices today (regardless of the OS, all devices have and will have these elements). Even if the technology progresses and the screen gets additional dimension or even different shape, the application would still be relevant (unless I get crushed by competitor, but lucky even today only very primitive versions of this exists), so hopefully it's going to go well.

Software is hard cause there is a very long delay between starting and getting that first version up and running. Even with lean start up etc it takes time.

@Locomote is on a similar journey as you and might give some insight.

Welcome to the forums also.

Congrats on making moves towards your dream. I'm fighting something similar, although in a different way. I still have my steady, stable development job because I don't think I'm quite ready to leave it. I've had a lot of personal loss (deaths) in the last 6 months that have really left me drained emotionally. I'm moving forward, but very slowly.

I hope everything works out for you!

I'm really sorry to hear that. I can't even imagine what you're going through. That's my biggest fear and primary motivator. The guilt if something happened before I make a break would destroy me completely rendering everything else useless. Stay strong, brother! If you ever feel down, I'm around and thank you!

Hi. I can relate to how you're feeling. I'm close but not entirely ready to get rid of my development job. I'm paid pretty well, the people and the environment are fine, the deadlines are reasonable-ish, but I'm just sick of doing it all and draining my mind all day everyday. I get home and I start doing things like putting milk in the pantry and I can't make any further decisions at all. As a developer you make thousands of decisions an hour and you're constantly storing this and that and moving it all around. It doesn't take much to go over the edge. I've been close to going mental several times this year and I've recently decided to make a change once I get back from taking my paid holiday time.

I've tried SaaS (Software as a Service) before and failed at it. You really need to move quickly and validate your products if that's the plan, don't bother writing ANY code until you've got purchase orders. The way I'm going to do it next time around is pick say two to three good ideas, and then whack up the frontend with all the promotional material, videos, demonstrations as though the products already exists, including a credit card gateway that will bounce, but capture the contact details. From there I'll decide what gets my time and attention. It's awfully tempting to want to start writing the code on day one, but resist that urge. Validate it all first, then write the code once you have generated sufficient interest.

My other piece of advice would be to research position descriptions online, look at the tech stacks employers are asking for - and then strategically use the same tools and languages to build out your products. That way, you're covered skill-wise if you do need to get back on the treadmill and return to paid work for a while. Or even better - you may complete a product, then return to paid work so you can scoop up that money and pump it all into marketing and hiring other people.

Just remember to breathe and not take on too much stress. I've stopped taking work home lately and I've decided to say F*ck no to any form of unpaid overtime. The amount of times I have pulled all nighters only to watch my code collect dust months later is infuriating! F*cking muppets in management have no clue sometimes, all the more reason to go out and compete against them.

Best of luck!
