I was wondering how you guys get ideas for blog articles? How often do you have the problem of writing something and it doesnt get read ? Do you know why (e.g no search engine traffic, or the current audience isn't intrested ? )

I do a ton of keyword research before I write any post.

My secret sauce is actually using forums. I run a blog in the BMW industry, and the forums are a huge wealth of information for BMW owners, especially ones looking to fix or modify their cars. I get on the forums and filter for the most viewed content. Most forums will have a views column, and clicking it will filter by most viewed. I then write a blog that is about the exact same thing, knowing that my website will rank higher in google than a forum will. Because of this, I don't have to "create" new content, I can just re-purpose, and gather and write better content.

I refer to this sometimes The Ultimate List of Blog Post Ideas

Or else just google blog ideas and there are many methods

I like picking popular topics from forums like here or Reddit and adding my spin

Or take an idea, start a discussion on a forum and use people's answers as inspiration. e.g. you're making a blog post about marketing roadblocks. Ask "what roadblocks do you have with marketing?" Then pull their questions and write rebuttals and throw it all in a blog post.

Oh and, watch your stats. I've had lots of fire ideas end up being duds. And boring ideas becoming wicked popular. Take note then make more of those.

Topical research.

Find out what's happening in your industry right now. Determine what's a trending topic and what is more evergreen. Write about that.

Keyword research works, but you're determining what to write next based on what someone else is already successful in. It's not a bad strategy starting off, but you're competing with the already established.

Agreed that you are competing with the already established, but this allows you to aggregate information from multiple established posts and easily create one that is better and more informative and helpful.

You definitely need to understand the industry. I write about a specific BMW, and it's the one that I drive, which makes it really easy for me to write about. I understand what is popular, what is important, and what people are looking for.
