How do i accomplish a patent search?

I have a great idea for a widget, but it seems like there is one person who has already made the exact product I was thinking of. However, this person only sells their product on their own business website and on Amazon. I believe with more work this product could be at checkout lines in supermarkets, big box stores, etc. The problem it solves is an issue most house holds deal with, there just isn't a nationally distributed example of this product.

My question is, how do I do a search to see if this other person has filed for a patent? If they have filed for a patent, am I dead in the water? What if she hasn't filed for one and I copy her design to a "T". Will she have grounds further down the line for any kind of lawsuit?
