I didn't see a thread on him so figured I'd start one. Last night MSNBC aired a special on Warren Buffett. He seemed very real and despite all of the money he has he didn't let it go to his head. A brief synpnosis of it was he rarely traveled outside of Omaha. Students from a class visits his every year since the class itself is based around him. He has given advice to several sports stars, Alex Rodriguez (A Rod for short) in baseball and Lebron James in basketball. One comment he made to A Rod was to be the best you can be in baseball and then focus on investing. In a sense he said do what you are good at and then focus on investing. A Rod will not be a Warren Buffett and Warren Buffett will not be an A Rod. Lebron James is trying to be the first billionaire sports figure and he may just do that. He is marketing himself and is off to a good start. Everyone has a niche that they can do better than the next person, so focus on those strengths.

I believe it was related. The special on Warren Buffett was right before the Donny Deutsch show.

It looked like there was an online link but it seems like it was removed. Maybe it will show up in a few days.

I saw the episode. It was actually a rerun from a lot earlier in the year but I watched it again because I think there is a lot to learn from Buffett. His attitude is incredible. He is a very humble man. What interested me most was how succinct his comments are. No rambling, just straight to the point. I assume that concise view has played a main role in his success with investing. Look at what you know. Wait until the numbers look appealing. Simplicity has worked well for the man.

I'm sure it's somewhere. They show it every now and then. I forgot the name of it. I just remember it's hosted by Erin Burnett.

Another good show they play is Wal Mart Nation. It's a documentary that shows how Wal Mart is only good for Wal Mart. Everyone from the vendors, employees and on down to people who live near a Wal Mart get hosed. Vendors are forced to keep lowering their prices till they are forced out of Wal Mart or go out of business. Employees get hosed on benifits. And anyone who lives near a Wal Mart get's their property value ruined.

But because Wal Mart is such a powerful machine, nobody can stop it. It's a really interesting documentary.

Warren Buffett is fantastic. I've read a few of his books and annual reports and find he is a great business person. Buffett's tenants are great as he looks at investing in businesses not stocks.

He's humble partly because he loves what he does. To Buffett - money was just the outcome.

Was that just based on the US stores or something? I worked at Wal-Mart when I was 17/18 and our benefits were pretty decent compared to the pay. We got all kinds of bonuses...share purchase plans, profit sharing, Christmas bonuses, year end bonuses. I always hear all these stories coming from the states about how shitty Wal-Mart treats it's employees and all these scandals and stuff, but none of that ever happened in the store I worked at...maybe I was just in a good one or a lot has changed in the last 10 years with Wal-Mart.

Anyway, I love Buffett, as mentioned he's such a down to earth guy. I watched a video of him giving a speech to some grads at a college of business somewhere and he was dressed more like a rubby-dub, than a billionaire...stretched out faded golf shirt that doesn't fit right, untucked, unkept hair...it was great. One of the best answers I've seen him make was when he was asked about some of his aquisitions and how those partnerships start...he said "If you keep trying kiss enough girls, eventually one says yes!" GOLD!

I watched the Big Idea with the Warren Buffet kids, I must say if I was Warren then I would be embarrassed of my kids, they didn't seem smart, they didn't finish college, they all run charity organizations which any 16 year old kid could do, it's not much of a challenge, also when your a millionaire (or billionaire) then you don't run charities but donate to them or hire people to run them. To me it seems Warren kids don't have the hunger to be successful since they have everything already. If I was Warren's kid then I would start a investment company also like him, learn everything from him and work on partnerships together while taking over great companies.

I didn't finish college and I'm not a millionaire, that doesn't make me stupid. If they already have the money, they can perfectly devote themself to make the world a better place through charities; why do you say that millionaires don't run charities? I don't see why they can't! I'm sure B. Gates takes a lot of decisions on his foundation.

[being_an_ass]Jorge, bizboy did not say they were stupid, only that in his opinion they did not seem smart.

Now, bizboy, how does somebody should seem to you so you classify him/her as smart? just wondering....
And I only know ONE 16 year old kid running a charity, and that is Diane Kennedy's son, and to me that is something out of the ordinary, very special actually.

Now, the way you write usually says a lot about how 'smart' you are (I read that somewhere, not that I really agree with that)... so it should be noted that the right way to say it is: "if I were Warren"... and the other one is "when you're a millionaire" or "when you are a millionaire"

And, if you ask the millionaires in this forum, they will tell you they, in many cases, prefer to run their own charities instead of just 'donate to them'.

So, again, 'smart' is an interesting definition, don't you concur?[/being_an_ass]

From what I understand, Bill Gates is actually leaving Microsoft this year to focus more of his time on running his charity.

Yes but Bill Gates had great success and now with his earned wealth he is trying to help the world, nothing wrong with that.

Warren Buffett kids been lazy all their life, running charity organizations makes them think they are successful but all they done was take daddy's money and give it away.

Sorry I didn't mean it in that way (I also didn't finish college also), but if you watched his kids on the Big Idea show by the way they were talking seems like they are high on something. I'm just saying that since they didn't follow in the family business then they must of had free time on their hands, so why not just finish college with that free time. No one said you were stupid, if you already know what your going to do with your life and have a plan to make it happen then there is no need for college. Most of the people I know without college degree make more money then college grads.

Hey! I'm not offended, no need to apologize! ;)
I'll try to find the show on youtube to get the picture straight. Its just that I don't think they have to make their own money in order to be considered successful...

I like the way Donald Trump raised his kids with the entrepreneur spirit which his kids are involved in the business of real estate like their dad.

His daughter earned money herself to buy a $1.5 million condo in NYC.
