If you know a language in case someone needs something translated quickly, post it. I am thinking some website info or product info, not books :)

I can help with Russian,

Have immediate, but short term access to
French
Spanish

If someone wants to jump on an idea to create a "skills- sort of a helpdesk" thread where one could post his knowledge and skills for others to request, that could be cool. I don't know how busy everyone is but it probably wouldn't hurt.

But, I suspect Jorge will be better at Spanish than I will - I speak "street Mexican Spanish" - didn't learn it in school.

I'm fluent in baseball talk, and I can communicate pretty well with my dog. I speak pretty decent Spanish, but only from taking it in school for 8 years.

Got any FORTRAN in you? :D
Yes, well fortran90 anyway.

Also here are two very good internet translators I use. They can translate small excerpts or entire pages on the internet. Copy and paste the text or the link and you can translate between any two major languages.

That reminds me, anyone have any recommended language courses? One of my goals is to travel Europe and I would like to speak the language of at least one country I visit. (Britain doesn't count)

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the breakdown:

Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark - very similar. I am determined to be able to handle language in that part of the world - which one is the easiest, quickest and most adaptable for use within those?

I just got Rosetta stone Spanish, any tips how to get it down quicker are appreciated.

Wow...we have a lot of diversity on here. I don't have a secondary language, but I have to take a couple of high level courses to graduate...I want to be able to speak Spanish. German would be great.

Best way I know to learn a language is immersion. If you can't go live in a Spanish-speaking country for a few months, watch Spanish language TV (I watch the news on Telemundo, for example) and hang out with Spanish speakers. About 10 years ago, my husband was pretty active in rehabbing properties in the Phoenix area. A large number of the construction people in our area are Latinos and I got to know a bunch of them. I often worked on the properties on the weekends and so I asked them to do a "Spanish only Saturday" - we only spoke Spanish on Saturdays during the construction. I'll never forget one day I was helping the foreman measure rooms. Geez- doing math in Spanish was hard!

Once you learn one language, other ones become much easier. I don't consider myself an expert in these, but can get around also in: Norwegian, Korean, Mandarin and Italian. I picked those languages up from extended travel and friends.

In my early school years I took several English classes, however, after several years I had forgot almost everything!

I HAD to read a book about programming that only was in english, so I got an English->Spanish dictionary and read the entire book (about 800 pages). In the last chapters I almost wasn't touching the dictionary!

But, I couldn't speak English at that point, so I started taking out the subs from Dvd's. After SEVERAL movies I learned to listen/talk in English.

Sometimes I engage in conversations with Americans in the airport (where I work) just to practice, this helps me to keep remembering the things I've learned.

I'm doing exactly the same with Italian and so far so good :)

This forum has to be excellent practice for your English (which is excellent btw). I often thought about joining a spanish or german forum to immerse myself a bit.

Yes! It really is, but its easier for me to speak, rather than write in English. (thanks for the compliment btw)

If you use the firefox browser, I recommend you to install this extension. Its a spellcheker for entry forms (like the one you use to post on this forum) I use it a lot for english and, while it lacks some words, overall its really helpful! Its also available in many languages.

Cheers
