I’m not taking a stand opposing or promoting this. My only goal is to ask this question, so that we can together find the answer.
In the last 100 years, humanity has changed more than it did the previous 100 000 years.
In the last decade alone, extreme changes have happened.
Imagine a future, a very possible one, where we achieve immortality by somehow connecting our mind to some form of AI based internet. Where we exist, forever, in a simulation where we live countless lives. During the lives, we have no knowledge or clue that we are in a simulation. Imagine that. A loop of lives. Obviously, we feel like life would be devoid of meaning. But in the simulation, without knowledge of the “truth”, we’d experience that life, just as vividly as this. We would be complex pieces of code, experiencing an eternal loop of emotions and sensory inputs. But we’d live a complete lie.
Maybe we are already in the simulation. Maybe this is one out of the infinite lives we experience. Or as far as I can be certain: I experience. You all may be part of the simulation. “I think therefore I am”. That is the only foundation we can stand on. This right here, is what the simulation would be like. It would feel like our first and only life.
However, if we exist for an eternity, constantly losing our memories and getting new lives, then we cease to exist. The individual you are now, would be gone. If you take an infinity of different lives and let one consciousness experience it, it will be so diluted that it would have to total personality. The person who experiences, let’s say the ten thousandth life, would not be you anymore. Would it even be a human? Likely not. And if we don’t lose our memories, well then that would be miserable. Artificial immortality.
In this case, the only thing that seems to have meaning is death. Real death. Nothingness. The end of the entire world. The universe collapsing in on itself. Eradication of life, matter and energy. Annihilation of the system keeping us stimulated for eternity.
This is a big existential question. But it does serve a positive purpose: helping us realize that death isn’t that bad after all. Assuming death is total. Assuming we’re not already in the simulation.
Apologies for this being so unpolished, I didn't have much time.
I posted this here because there are many independant thinkers in here, and I'd love to hear y'alls perspective.
