Hey @Timmy C ,

Quite good, hope you're doing great too!

Sorry to hear your project did not go as planned. Did you completely completely drop it or still exploring alternative ways to turn it into business?

There was no way to turn it into a business anymore, that's why I dropped it completely a few months after google deindexed my website. I could not rely on youtube as a single income stream, and the amount of views needed to make that viable at all just using that platform was not worth the squeeze.
Talking about business, on my side, most of the opportunities I get are requests to write some dedicated files in Apps Script to automate tasks. People find me thanks to the channel and contact me through the contact form of the website. Overall I notice many people are interested to learn but at the end many of them don't have the time or miss motivation to do the work by themselves.
That's cool, make sure you get paid for doing that work. I used to buy into the ''give value for free'' mindset, but I don't anymore personally, if you do work for free for people, they with think you are a chump, as they should.

I had a call this week with someone asking me to create a script to automate the creation of a specific file for real estate management. I'm working on it this WE. For now it's only direct service of course but there could be opportunity to propose the same file to multiple people ... or also other files for different niches.

Let's see where we can go from there ... but I agree with you I need to face the next step and get things in place to make a sale. That's a big next step for me that I have in mind.

Thank you !

Sounds like a good plan mate, you might have something, keep pushing a bit I think.

What if you also did Google Ads scripts?

Thanks mate !

For the work I'm currently busy with, I actually have no clue of what could be the price (or let's say I have a rough idea but not sure enough to be confident). And as I am currently looking to get the structure to propose services (or to sell anything), I proposed him to work on the project and if I can't be on-time with everything, I proposed to not get paid at the end ... but actually he wasn't comfortable with that. Although I think he may be more an exception.

What if you also did Google Ads scripts?

I actually do not know it but you have sparked my curiosity. I'll make sure to have a look at it but I need to catch up with Google Ads first. I think you made some content on the topic so I'll have a look at it too

Hello all,

Here is the latest progress:

1716495434557.png

Not a lot of progress on YouTube side... I keep up with the 1 video per week pace and I'm currently busy with a series of videos showing the possibilities to automatize the creation of invoices ... nothing that has the potential to create a buzz but good enough to keep enough momentum on the channel and still has the potential to grow the audience with time ... and this also has the advantage to leave more time for other stuff.

I'm currently more busy with the code / file creation that I have already introduced last month. I've been challenged quite a bit by my "customer" (not sure I can call him a customer at this stage but that's the closest to a customer that I've ever had). This is quite good though because it forces me to extend my knowledge to customer oriented expectations that I would not consider if I'd just be continuing making personal files/code for myself or to make demos on YouTube.

I'm struggling a bit with some parameters as I am still learning as well (I think this clearly pushes me out of the comfort zone) but I'm trying to discuss the points openly with the customer and give regular updates so he can already try the file and let me know what he would like to change ... I am used to have discussions with customers for my job but this is another thing here with more uncertainties. The project was not fully detailed so I am trying to understand the expectations better as I work on it and talk with the customer ... At the end facing requests for changes from the customer is anyway part of any project and the most important is to understand them as early as possible to avoid spending too much time on it.

I think all this can seem very simple/basic for many people on the forum but there are still some big steps for me to climb so that's my progress. Thanks for reading me!

I read the entire thread and wanted to say THANK YOU for documenting your entire process. Your story is an encouraging example for people starting with YT. One thought and two ideas:

Having a specific number of subscribers as a goal puts the target in something you don't control. Whereas publishing a certain amount of videos per week it's within your locus of control. The latter doesn't sound as sexy as the first but it will get you there eventually if you keep working on it and actively getting better with each video.

Idea 1: Some long videos (like 4 hours long) contain an entire full course on a particular tech topic in YT. It's a big investment compared to filming a 4-minute video but the payoff can also be very big as you can target people who want to change careers or learn a new skill from scratch. You can also break the long video into chapters and post those separately as different videos. Can also be an entry door for selling paid advanced courses to your audience. Have you thought about that?

Idea 2: Have you thought about being on camera? The focus of your channel can still be on the skills you share, but putting a face to the voice can help with the engagement. An example of this is Academind where the speaker still appears on screen (small picture-in-picture square at the bottom) during the entire video.

Again, thanks for sharing your story!

Thank you @pmusu !

The further it goes, the more obvious it is that YouTube plays with the number of subscribers to "control" the channel so it is definitely not the right indicator for a target (although some people still manage to get quick success).

Idea 1 => I have quite a few videos close to 1h with different successes ... The number of views is never high at the beginning with these ones but it indeed improves with time. For my channel the optimum seems to be around 15-20 min right now.

Idea 2 => Yes I thought about it but right now I'm not yet willing to do it as this is a side activity and I prefer to stay a bit under the radar. I think I may try it in the future though but step by step (just talking and publishing the video was already a big step for me at the beginning ... I think now it would be OK to appear on video but still another big step).

Thanks!
