Good morning/evening. I am George from South Africa, 25 years old.
Not sure where to start with this introduction so I will start with thanking Mr. DeMarco for all the work he has chosen to share with the world and this platform to bring all those people he impacted together.
I want to be an entrepreneur, this is not something that I would like to happen but I am okay with a 9-5, no, I completely hate the idea of working for someone else until I die, I want entrepreneurship.
But wants and needs are two different things, so that is why I currently have a "9-5" but it's actually not a job instead it is a fully funded learnership in Business Administration (I didn't go to school for this). I'm being hosted by a company that deals with skills development, research and writing and also stakeholder management, more of a consultancy, of less than 20 team members but only the founder is full-time, that completed it's 10th year this year and I am always with the founder which is good for me because I can get his insights on things and ask him questions related to business and take a lot of notes.
It being a small company there isn't much work for me except when I am given tasks to help the other people such as research this, compile this document, etc. Other than that I would classify myself as useless for the actual company if it wasn't for the fact that the founder wants me to help him build his personal brand because to date he has gotten clients by people knowing him.
This seems like a golden opportunity for me because (1) my learnership is fully funded, (2) I'll be working closely with a founder of a company that is doing exactly what I kind of want to, (3) the founder wants to transition out of the business so he needs to starts putting SOPs in place so I'll be taking notes on what things to implement early in my own businesses to avoid trapping myself in the business and (3) I'll be learning a skill - brand building and marketing - which is valuable.
The confusion comes in when I remember that I don't know anything about growing a personal brand but this is a company I genuienly want to be involved in and watch how they do things, so I guess I have a lot of learning to do and testing since I already have soomeone's brand to grow which is why I joined the forum because sometimes i might see something in the company and come ask the forum members what they think of a certain process and also ask about the personal brand building stuff.
I'm treating this company as my lab basically, taking notes, asking questions, making suggestions, etc.
I am grateful to be here (forum) though.
