My main purpose is freedom, but that is a multilayered statement. It involves freedom to set my schedule, work when and where I want, how I want. Freedom and finances to enjoy the things I love to do, and the time to do so. Freedom to find a great retirement place for my mother and be able to support her. Freedom to live in house(s) that make me happy, in areas of the world that I want to be in. Freedom to eat the good foods, have a great home gym, and be able to keep my fitness and health a top priority.

Honestly there are a lot of "things" that come with that freedom. I'm okay with working, and have no delusions that at my age, I will get out of that any time soon, but as long as there is more freedom attached to that work, I'm okay with it for the next 20+ years.

Only 20+ years? What if it takes 40 or 50 years?

I see wealth accumulation as a game. I want to see how well I play it and how far I can go. I don’t want a freedom number, because I will always continue to play this game.

Also I experienced (relative) poverty in my youth. I grew up in a single mom household in a rich country, so there was always food on the table, but growing up I never had the same things/experiences as a lot of other kids in my school. I think this sparked a little entrepreneurship in me since I always had small hustles to make money (selling fireworks, clothing, playing card etc.)

There’s also a dimension of wanting to prove other people wrong. A lot of teachers etc. Said to me that I would never amount to something in my life.

And besides the above it just feels great to be able to afford luxury right?

I love what I do already. I'd just like to do more of it, and reach/help more people, and meet more people.

I've an itch I haven't scratched, and I therefore keep putting one foot in front of the other, and love each step.

It doesn't even feel like work. It's just a series of habits, like walking or breathing.

Each problem encountered is another opportunity to learn something new, and take another step in my journey.

In short, I don't really have a destination, I just like moving.

A question to ask yourself: "If money was no object, what would you be doing?"

Then realise that money IS no object.

Old but GOLD comment Andy. So recognizable :)

For me it's recruitment and building business. Connecting people with the right values.

Getting up early every morning? Working out? Taking care of my body?
It's just a series of habits, like walking of breathing.

Love the process, enjoy every moment. Even the moments of 'suck'.

Also coming back to @BizyDad's question:
Who are you helping to get rich? (in the wallet, head and heart)
It never stops and gives so much positive energy.

Maybe because I'm already in my mid 40's and don't have that kind of time? For most of my life fell for the scripted regime, and what everyone in my world said, what all the"advice" out there says.... advantages are that there's an extra level of determination, and I've lived some life and done some shit and have an idea of things people/companies actually want, need, and will pay for. Biggest disadvantages are trying to break those ingrained thought patterns and, well, time....

I've done some thinking, and after reading TMF I had lots of very materialistic goals. All I wanted was fast cars, attention & not to work.

Now I think of all the people, those I've met & haven't yet, that need me to step up and be a leader & innovator. I've come to realize that leadership is a lacking skill & people run towards it once they see it.

It upsets me to think of all those people that will be worse off because of my choices to be too lazy & being scared to help them. I can't afford to take that to the grave.

I would say I strive for wealth in order to not have the problems that others have.

A mediocre life involves a lot of pain and constant need to self-brainwash that this is normal and okay because most people have such problem.

When I was your age, I went to law school and built a new career by being an expert witness and litigation specialist in RE matters. My advantage was all the years I had been working in the RE business. I saw and understood how things worked. I wasn't starting over from scratch. I didn't want to be an attorney, and I sure have used my education.

The idea came from asking a guy at law school what he did. He told me he was a forensic accountant. I pulled my chair up closer and asked him to tell me all about what he did. I was able to take that information and apply it to RE. By the time I finished law school, I had a huge expert practice along with my ongoing commercial RE appraising practice. And no one at law school knew it. I was working 60 hours per week, plus carrying 9 grad units.

The law school Dean asked me what I was going to do next about the time I finished. I told her I was going to be a prima ballerina. I thought it was a hilarious answer since I was a middle-aged woman with grown children. My Dean didn't think I was funny at all since the legal field is very serious. Oh well. I did what I wanted with my education.

You can do something similar. Take what you know and run with it. Assess what you don't know and add to your knowledge base. Be thoughtfully bold. Talk to everyone who will have a conversation. You never know what you can learn from them. Try some stuff to figure out your next step. You don't have to bet the farm. Just launch some tests to figure out what works for you. Your efforts can be small baby steps. Just make them a regular event. They will add up over time.

That's exactly what I've been doing :) Got my business set up last year, landed my first client at the very end of the year, that is going well; working on growth and expansion. Not explosive, but life altering for me even at this point. At a point still have the day job, which may stick around for a bit, but the work is worth it at this point.

I've put this in off topic as it is more dreamer than progress but thought it would be fun to know peoples reasons for going into business/wanting to make a decent amount of money. MJ spoke about wanting to be the driver of his own lambo. Some want freedom or time with your kids. Mine, I want to emigrate with my family to the U.S. and unless you go the marriage route (which i doubt my wife would appreciate ha!) or have a degree(NOPE!) the only other way is to have money/business assets. That's what keeps my flame burning bright. How about you?
My Lambo is a house in the country with a bit of land and outbuildings where I can hold adult training classes (art, photography, conversational Spanish, you know the kind I mean). All fun classes stopped in our town during COVID and never started again.

My main Lambo is curiosity and desire to force myself to grow. Yes, providing value and gaining financial/time freedom etc are also drivers but curiosity/growth is the big one.
Can I do 'this'? How do I overcome 'that'? Has doing 'scary or hard thing' changed me for the better? What have my failures taught me?

I love your post because it begs us to consider our Big Why as to what gets us out of bed every morning. For me, I wanted more time freedom and life experience with my family, since my childhood was messed up. I want my kids to know they have a dad who is there for them. I want my wife to know she’s deeply loved and secured.

Mine are starting to clear up a lot for me recently.

I'm going to leave out the freedom part, because duh..

Both of my parents who divorced when I was young, have stuffed up massively and I will need to make sure they are ok in the coming years.

I want a couple of dogs, so need to own my own property that's big enough for zoomies (and one where I can't see my neighbours).

Car is a new one for me. I have never had a desire for a lambo or anything. Would love to take modern sports cars or supercars on a track day (the official Porsche experience that runs for 3 days at Spa Franchorchamps track in Belgium looks incredible). But that's changed now, lol. I want a restomod Porsche, probably a 964, or a 993. There are MUCH more affordable options out there than the crazy Singer prices.

Lastly is to only ever fly internationally from Australia on a long haul flight on an Emirates A380 business class seat (doesn't have to be the crazy 30k suite, just regular business, I'm a simple man  )

Beware the trap. Life is fleeting. Don’t rush into something you have to work to keep, unless you want to work to keep it. Remember what’s really important. And don’t ever forget, what owns who.
That there is blunt and true and right.

I want to make a dent in Africa.

I want the freedom to solve Africa's energy, education and Communication problems.

Somebody else will do for food.

That freedom requires when I am out of my 7-6 job and in the country, moving about and learning everything and doing something in those fields.

Education requires a kind of school where learning happens at speed of light and keeps up-to-date with the contemporary world.

Energy is in the renewable green energy field. The potential is enormous. What stops Africa from embracing electric cars? A huge chasm. What about someone tossing sand in there till it's filled up? I am gonna do that.

I want to my children to home school. I want to give them a library and access to internet. I want them some of the crucial places on earth, museums, and the like.

Schools in Uganda spend 11 years teaching people physics of the 19th century and math of the 3rd century.

I want my children to learn from today.

I want my wife to be proud of her choice to say yes.

I want my dad and mom to be proud of their son.

I want Africa to play well in the big game.

I think about this everyday. More like every hour.

I publish to set off the trend and seek momentum.

I don't want to be enslaved by work, I want to freely unleash my potential, I want to do many things I want to do, I don't want to spend all my time on work, work is just a small part of life, I want to experience more interesting activities in this world.

I think some people here in the US really need to give this a good read, particular young kids who think they have it bad. Now they just want everything free.

Anyhow, this is my *new* Lambo I am working for...

luxury_smoky_mountains_cabin1.jpg

Buying with income already earned is not how I roll either, must be new earnings!
I have boat club I want to join but I've promised myself that I wouldn't do it with existing income. I am starting something new that will cover the monthly fees. For me, it's easier to start with a small goal so it doesn't feel so overwhelming. But there is still a longer term goal associated with freedom so I don't limit myself. I've realized the hardest part is just getting started.

I turned 50 this year, which brought a whole new personal perspective on what's important in life.

Material objects and shiny things don't interest me as they did before.

My wants are: 1) Simple living, 2) Impacting and helping others, 3) Living life with purpose, 4) having life experiences with family, wife, and kids

I'm older than you, but I have found the same truths. The things that were important when I was young don't mean much anymore. I have become a minimalist in most areas of my life. My direction is toward helping the people around me. My bragging rights are helping them to find their successes. My focus is on simple pleasures with family and friends.
