Jobs can make you comfortable, or they can motivate you, they can give you a small inkling of hope that one day, you can retire with a modest amount. This is true. One day, possibly, you can retire from that 9-5 and live in mediocre years no longer working. Put in 40+ years just like most everyone else and it can happen for you to, maybe.

I work in the IT industry, and make a comfortable living. I go to work at a desk job and fix the network on Cisco router/switches/firewalls. Sometimes it's challenging, and it's for a credit card authorization company. I literally watch the transactions as they happen. Thousands of them every minute, the company takes a small slice of profit from each one. I watch my yearly salary happen in microseconds.

The only thing keeping you in a job is yourself. There is literally no reason you can't start a business at night and on weekends. Sleep less, stop watching TV, cut back on social encounters. Jobs are shackles, but those shackles are weak as hell when you have a little determination.

Kinda explains why sometimes it's not a bad thing to be chasing pennies over dollars.
