What do YOU do when investigating a venture?

So the past couple days have seen me thinking about Fastlane ideas and ventures I could take, and after a while some good things popped up. But now I am faced with a dilema. I have NO idea on how to start the investigation/due dilligence thing. Ive looked up the terms I think I would use and looked at the competition but thats about it.
What are some of the variables you look at when considering a new business idea?

How much need do you want?
How much competition do you look for?
What things make you leave the idea?
etc.

I already know about Scale and Leverage and how that is what really rolls in the dough. But I'm just not sure what other things to look for.
