Everyone with a website would at some point like to make money with the site. Right now the most popular and convenient way is with google adsense but popular and conveient doesnt always mean the best. For people serious about making money from thier website the best thing to do is cut out the middle man. people are always looking to advertise online and adwords can be extremely expensive for someone just starting out. If you could provide a decent number of views by having steady traffic to your website people will gladly pay you to advertise on your site and in a lot of cases both advertiser and publisher would benifit much more with google not in the middle. Publishers would make more money by being payed directly from the customer and the advertiser would receive many more impressions with every visitor to a moderately popular site seeing the advertisement everytime. Not just when a keyword is typed in. The down side ofcourse is the added time it will take to organize your advertisements and in the world of the internet everyone expects enormous amounts of visitors for a few dollars but there are those that understand you get what you pay for and those are the people that are gonna be willing to spend money in order to get not only quality traffic but improved search engine rank by having the high quality link.
