I posted about this on SteveO's thread, but to not get off topic I figured I'd post my own.

My first step towards the fastlane was finally saying "do this!" and it was buying 2 domain names that I feel I can build good service businesses around. I was hoping to have more of a plan around both before posting, but seeing as ideas are a dime a dozen I figured it's worth a shot to post up and see what you guys think:

Domain 1) besthometel dot com

Backstory- Having roommates to help foot the bill on my mortgage, one of the services I used was roommates dot com. Knowing that a great service based page with a great demand such as this has great value I figured I'd go off my experience and thought of a new idea that most likely has not been tested.

The Idea- Being a road-warrior myself, well casual traveler who is sick of how much hotels cost and knowing that home owners are in need of extra revenue as well, I thought of an idea of "home hotels", a service that links business travelers with home-owners who need a lil' extra cash and violia- the idea of "besthometel" was born. In fact I wanted to do "hometel" and even had other ideas where either the .com was taken or the name just didn't sound good enough such as athomehotel or stayathome or hotelathome, etc.

What I need to do- find out the obstacles/challenges, the major challenge that comes to mind is being able to pre-screen members and make sure that someone who is opening their house to a complete stranger knows that this stranger is not an ex-felon or other possible risk. Another risk is if the "renter" damages any property or gets injured, now we're talking about liability. To top that off, what is the legality and ultimately the viability of such an idea. Hopefully I can have more research and DD into this prior to B&P, but all I know is even if this idea never takes off, just taking these first steps and realizing that ideas really are a dime a dozen will help me to go through the hundreds even thousands of dreams to finally finding the one that catches on!

Domain 2) automotiveservicereminders dot com

Backstory- I'm a DIY mechanic/gearhead/carnut, etc... lol, when I was 18 I took the engine out of my car and took it apart- FOR FUN :p

I also wanted to get into mechanical engineering with the "realistic" dream of working for Porsche and the "pie in the sky" dream of owning my own tuning shop. While I never finished my engineering degree and actually got my degree in German AND put the tuning shop idea on hold as the market is so watered down with the only way to profit is a really good niche market(P-cars, Lambos, Ferraris, etc) OR do very high volume in a Mustang/Civic market, both of which I feel either an engineering background or being an ASE cert technician are a MUST to understand the field.

With all that in mind, I figured a realistic plan I could develop would be a service reminder page that I could develop, most likely with the help of an elance developer.

The Idea- It wasn't until recently that I really kept track of the actual mileage/dates that I did the service on my car, granted the longest I went over on an oil change was the one time I went about 3500 miles, but using Mobil 1 Synthetic, I'd imagine doing it any earlier is just flushing money down the toilet. So the idea, which was somewhat inspired by one of the success stories here, is a web subscription service for SMS reminders of when your car is due for service. Let's face it, people are glued to their smart-phones and despite the sticker that JiffyLube puts on your windshield, most don't keep track, so why not have these reminders where you'd have the best chance of seeing it- YOUR PHONE!

What I need to do- Research to see if any of the service chains do this and if not, how I could approach them to implementing such a service while of course developing it myself. This might include having an exclusive deal with a wireless carrier AND service franchise. Find a developer to setup the site and work on marketing it. Possibly inventing a device that keeps track of the odometer on the car via the web and can automatically generate these reminders w/i 500, 50, 0 miles of service- whether it's shocks, brakes, oil, etc. This way the customer has more than just a recommended date to go by.

So anyways those are the "big" ideas, there are plenty more floating around, an e-Commerce site and REI are of course other outlets I want to explore on the road to the fastlane and will hopefully have plenty of practical/real-world knowledge after B&P so that one of the many goals including the most important one of having a business in place and having the option to leave my j-o-b by Jan of next year can become a reality :coolgleamA:

Bump.

Sorry for the long post and hopefully it makes sense as I would really like some feedback from some of the established e-Biz members before I go forward with either idea.

Thanks,

Clint

Interesting you bring up your "home motel" idea as I received a call last year for one of my rentals from someone who wanted to do just this. Long-story-short, he said he and two coworkers lived out-of-state, but their company had a revolving 3-contract with a business in a nearby town. He said they fly in on Sunday evening, spend 4-5 days, and fly out, so the place would be empty 3-4 days per week. He also said he couldn't guarantee they would renew the contract every 3 months, but they had for the last 2 years. The catch was he said they wouldn't put any deposit down as it could only be a 3-month lease. I told him "No thanks", but would fish his info to other landlords in the area. So I think the idea is viable.

Europeans have strangers stay in their homes all the time. It's kinda a fun way to travel as long as the people are cool--and of course it depends if you are talking about actually being in the home with strangers, or just temporarily renting your home out to a stranger (without being there.)

There was an article in our local paper about a year ago about this. I think they called it "couch surfing" ? Interesting idea!

Clint, i read this twice and haven't grasped your complete idea yet. How do you plan to implement both of these ideas? The second one has a good domain, although getting partner contracts with the carriers might be a big task. I would start evaluating how you are going to build the systems and start building your team. Look for competitors as well and analyze their business'.

Thanks for the responses!

I guess it could be both, but the initial concept is to be at home with strangers, something that some could have apprehensions about, but then again, I'd be interested to see what % of roommates.com subscribers are for home-sharing vs. living in someone's apartment. Either way I'm sure a temporary stay in someone's apartment versus a hotel could catch on as well.

And oh yea, they also have "hitchhiking" websites in Europe where you can find out if someone is driving from one city to another and ride along with them so the driver gets his gas paid for and the rider saves money vs. a bus/train. In fact even this idea could catch on here, even though the major cities here are much farther apart.

There was something on the local news about "roomsharing" which is the term for renting out a room in your house as I'm doing now. Interesting how they can take something like "couch surfing" that already has meaning and add a completely new meaning to it :smxB:

Both ideas are in the infancy, but both do have some precedent with roommates.com and all the spinoffs as well as the inspiration for the second idea being cantwait2's movie time reminders. I know neither one will be easy, but if either catches on I see big potential.

As for idea one, I could have a template setup similar to most subscription services, but would most likely have to do a test run and find out the legality/liability of such a concept which would mean consulting with an attorney.

The second idea to reach it's full potential would involve an innovation that could track odometers, which wouldn't be as much of an issue for newer cars where they are already electronic, but for older mechanical speedos it would be a challenge. To top it off, a partnership with a nationwide service shop would be a must b/c people who don't track their service intervals as it is, most likely won't be going to a site to register their service records.

I feel there still would be a decent amount of gear-heads and car forum types that could see the benefit, but the true success of this is getting it to the masses through some type of "add-on" when you get service done, much like how the oil change place tries to replace your air filter, PCV valve, brake lights, etc. The only difference is that it will be a low-cost/high-benefit solution versus the insane markup they have all the services at most shops and it will benefit the shop by further promoting customer loyalty.

Think a little more on the second idea. What do both warranty and service intervals involve? not only the actual milage but a time based on a yearly average driving limit.oil changes are what 3k/5k miles and a few months. So all you would really have to do is have someone enter their current milage and either average daily/weekly/or yearly driving and your backend would calculate estimated times based on the average. Noon need for it to be exact because we all know you dont hit the shop on the dot. as for marketing you would need to reach a mass market of non gear heads. those would benifit the service most, someone that does not think or care about the car.... just some starters for you to fuel a plan off of. I am going to talk to a friend of mine and see what is invloved in getting carrier partnerships set up since you are not the only one asking about it.

If you could build a business around doing background checks on people who want to roomshare/couch flop, and people who offer the rooms and couches that would be great. As a woman, there is no way in hell I would stay in a stranger's home in my own room or otherwise. I would consider traveling this way if I had an idea of whose home I was sharing though. ...Just a thought. :)

Clint, why not launch this site v.1 and do email for now instead of SMS. have SMS a later feature and upgradable for a fee(once you figure that whole road out). The site couldnt be too complicated to get set up with email reminders at certain intervals.

None of the other sites screen candidates, you still need to use a service like Intellius, eRenter, LexusNexus, TenantVerificationServices, etc. So if I could figure out a way to integrate it, I might even be able to go after rm.com market share, I just need to find out what size market they control as I know there are competitors, there were atleast 5 different roommate search websites I registered for my first go-round looking for roommates, but rm.com was the only one I actually felt was worth paying for.

And remember us guys still have stuff to worry about, even a big guy like me.

Lighthouse- that's a good idea, as I mentioned the target is smart phones and on Adi's blackberry she gets the same reminder for an SMS as she does for an email.

I am going to talk to a SMS vet about the ins- and outs later for personal reasons. but what i have gathered so far is the best way to do sms billing is through an aggregator. They have contracts with all the major companies. The issue is you need to have a billing system developed for your clients because you still have to send the billing information to them and you obviously want to automate it.

Thanks Chris!

I've been so swamped at work this last week it's been tough to get on the forums, but on the plus side Adi and I are getting our finances in order and started working out together, two "successes" that I know will translate to working on these business ideas :coolgleamA:

For something like what he wants to do, I wouldn't suggest going that route at all. Those aggregators take over 40% of the revenue.

A really simple thing to do would be to just charge the user to use the online service and send the text messages for free via email.
