Now I dont want to waste anybody's time, including my own. As we all know time is limited. Im going to tell my story here, nothing crazy about it.
I came out of high school knowing I didn't want to go to college because I didn't want to put myself into the same debt I saw my brother go through. My dad was a mechanic for his whole life, he owned his own shop for about 25 years when he had enough of struggling and got a job as a manager at the city transit. He knew a lot of people in the industry and has a great reputation as one of the best at anything he does.
He got me a job as a mechanic at 18 years old with very little experience making 22 dollars an hour. The job was great, and at the time I thought this is where I was planning going with my life. Bought myself 2010 challenger rt after saving up some money. Life seemed great compared to most kids my age. After about a year working there I had enough experience to get a job at the city transit as a mechanic where my dad works, I took a pay cut to work there but after about a year it would've jumped me up to 30 dollars an hour! Great right? So I thought.
I knew going into the city transit job I was going to be working night shift (11pm-7:30am) with bad days off (wednesday, thursday), but I thought that was what I had to do. Pay my dues and it would all be worth it in the end. Traded in my challenger for a 2015 challenger srt, putting myself in more debt, which I thought was fine because I was making 31 dollars an hour at this point. Im 20 years old now and I slowly I hated that job more and more. At this point I had decided I had bigger dreams than this, it was just a matter of achieving it. I started out researching anything that made money, from stocks to real estate to ecommerce, anything. Never took any action.
I had read these forums for some time before actually reading TMF , when I finally did around October 2015. It taught me a lot, best book I've ever read. I started looking for a need and providing value rather than anything that makes money. The obstacle I had was that my job was a motivation sucker, I never would have started anything if I stayed at that job. After having an idea, I decided to quit my job. My last day was January 2nd. I saved up about 24k while working there and I still live at home. My only bills being car insurance and my 600 dollar car payment. At that rate I could live for about 2 years with my current savings. But to get rid of the last of my slowlane mindset, I decided this week to trade in my car to get rid of my debt. I don't do a lot of driving anyway, and have a second car that I own.
Well that 'idea' I had I didnt do much research into and the idea proved worthless when I did the research after quitting my job. I was back to square one, but now I have all the time to pursue this. But something in me is still wasting time. Whenever I have an idea I find a problem with it. I never execute because I convince myself their is a problem with the business and it's not worth pursuing. But at this rate I will never start and just keep waiting for that perfect idea.
My parents support me in these efforts, and I am comfortable where I am at. There is no sense of desperation for me. That may be holding me back. I am thinking that I need a change in my life. Part of my goals are to travel for 6 months a year, and I have never lived on my own. Thinking about moving somewhere different for awhile and making a change. Im posting this to admit, to myself and anyone reading, that something needs to change.
