Tips for freelance cover designing?

I've been thinking of trying to offer up some freelance cover designing along side my writing; Nothing serious, just something to dabble in on the side. I've found that I really enjoy cover creation. However, I'm completely green in how such jobs work concerning image licensing and what not.

Can anyone point me to some solid resources or offer their own experiences on how to go about offering such a service correctly and in compliance with image licenses?

For example, let's say I purchase stock photos, use them in creation of a custom cover for an author and then sell the finish product to said author. Since the author didn't pay for the licenses to use the photos I purchased to make their cover, are they in violation of the license?

For stock images that require written credit to the site/photographer, do I simply provide that information to a client and instruct them to include it upon sale of their custom order?
