Back in 2007 I reported to an IT Manager by the name of Colin Jennings.

One day he dropped this great quote on me and I've used it ever since when I've hired freelancers or employees.

The person who'll run with the ball isn't always the person with the most skills. Often it's the person who puts their hand up to catch the ball.

It applies to customers/clients too.

"Help the people in motion" (Amy Hoy)

Perry Marshall calls it "wracking the shotgun". Do something and see who's heads whip round because they noticed.

"Sales is a screening process." (Blaise Brosnan)

Throw the ball out there and see who catches it.
