Taking a crack at this - Why some of us feel elite

<div class="bbWrapper">I noticed that it is a common trend on this forum, and other forums with the fastlane mentality to feel almost better than other people who do slowlane or sidewalk things. Not in the sense that we&#039;d smack them in the face or make fun of them, but we feel as if their mindset is sort of primitive. <br /> <br /> <br /> I was speaking about it with my friend who is basically my business partner, he shares the exact same mentality as me.<br /> <br /> So I asked him &quot;Why do you think striving entrepreneurs s get fed up when they hear people with that &quot;Normal&quot; mindset&quot;.<br /> <br /> He wasn&#039;t really sure, so I took a crack at it.<br /> <br /> I think it&#039;s because anytime I ask someone how they are doing, or what kind of plans they have going for them, no matter what they said, I almost always respond with &quot;Awesome man! I hope it all works out!&quot;. Granted, these are people who I&#039;d consider friends, but that I don&#039;t know well enough to say &quot;hey fella, take a seat over there, let me change the way you think&quot;. It&#039;d be insulting.<br /> <br /> Now on the other hand, when I tell people in a fairly vague way, or hell- even in depth, the response is always &quot;Nah man, too many people on the internet, you&#039;ll never succeed&quot;. &quot;Dude, you&#039;d have to be REALLY lucky to have that happen to you.&quot; &quot;Yeah well, it&#039;s worth a try&quot;.<br /> <br /> I&#039;ve just noticed that they always tend to be so doubtful. Why is it that when anyone on here, hears someone with an extravagant plant to succeed we all encourage them. <br /> <br /> I&#039;m no entrepreneur yet, so don&#039;t think my opinion really counts, but I&#039;m just saying that this is where the elitism stems from FOR ME. Obviously I&#039;m not a better person than them or anything but I guess it is just so laughable to believe that when people bring up mediocre plans in life, everyone loves it. When someone takes a shot at being original, they are shot down and laughed at. Should we be the ones laughing at them?<br /> <br /> <br /> Now, this thread is all with a positive mentality, no &quot;I&#039;m better than you cause I wanna be an entrepreneur!&quot;, just some of my thoughts.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">I have been in the same boat as you on many conversations. Remember we all can&#039;t be entrepreneurs. Honestly the way I look at it is one less person to have to deal with competition wise. To be honest your worrying way to much about what others believe or feel. The thing about entrepreneurship is no one cares about your idea until everyone cares about it. Why do you feel so strongly to even try to explain to others where your headed. The truth is no one really cares, do you really care when someone tells you there plans? No you sit back and think how can I explain to them their not on the right path. They are probably thinking the same about you. See everyone has different paths, not everyone wants to own/control, lots of people are ok with being &quot;normal&quot;. Make it, then talk it, you will have so many more open ears. <br /> <br /> Also I stopped trying to explain the fast lane mentality. If I am ever asked what the fast lane is, I simply tell them they have to read the book. In the 20-30 conversations I have literally had one person buy the book. That one person thanked me for recommending the book. That is 1 out of 30 people. Nuff said.</div>

OWS proved that slowlaners and sidewalkers will. When the 9 to 5ers and welfare babies consistently mock, laugh, and ridicule the choices you&#039;re making in your life to better yourself, it tends to make you quite bitter...<br /> <br /> Entrepreneur circles are safe-havens for like minded people to get out their thoughts and ideas. I haven&#039;t been posting much lately because I&#039;ve been busy with my business, but every time I come on here I wonder more and more why so many people on here are sticking up for the average non-entrepreneur life... It&#039;s starting to become more the SLF, than the FLF.:nonod:</div>

I am just as selfish and have a ME tag around my neck just like everyone else. The only people I really care about are my friends and family. Someday I hope to be able to take care for all of my 9-5 family and my real friends.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Many of those people have more stomach than I do. I have &quot;gumption&quot; perhaps, but I don&#039;t have the stomach to work some soul-sucking office job for 50 years. I very literally would kill myself. <br /> <br /> So my picking up TMF started out with the question, what&#039;s a life path that won&#039;t end up with me dead before 40? I knew it would involve some level of gumption and taking control of my life, but I wasn&#039;t sure it was entrepreneurship.<br /> <br /> My grandpa worked horrendous hours as a chicken sexer for his entire life. He stuck his fingers into hundred of chickens&#039; asses every single day. I think of him and a lot and he is my role model in many ways, because while I aspire to his work ethic, I know that he was also more constitutionally sturdy than I am, and I really admire that.</div>

Nobody needs to be concerned about it. Someone asks you to hang with them? Tell em you&#039;re busy.<br /> <br /> Also: we know that most people here with extravagant plans are going to fail and go back to their bubble of working a regular job or a regular business or whatever they did before they found TMF. You CAN get rich without being a Fastlane entrepreneur! You CAN get rich buying and selling real estate while you work at a regular job! You CAN get rich by buying companies instead of building them! Are these Fastlane activities? Absolutely. But they are not the same as building a business!<br /> <br /> Some people simply are NOT cut out to build a business because it&#039;s F*cking hard and requires certain skillsets that most people simply aren&#039;t willing to learn. And there&#039;s nothing wrong with that.<br /> <br /> The Fastlane is more about doing what makes you happy without the crux of money, not about following a prescribed plan (starting a business with the intent to cash out at the end and live a retirement off of municipal bonds and dividend stocks). You can do whatever the hell you want in the Fastlane.</div>

The problem is that our utterly useless piece of shit ego gets in the way. <br /> <br /> This ideal version we have of ourselves hurts our approach to business; better insights than everyone else, better, smarter, more talented. The reality is that we are not special and not as awesome as we might think we are.<br /> <br /> You gotta know your weaknesses so you can know who to partner with, who to hire, whether to get investors money, whether you should dump your life savings into a business etc. <br /> <br /> The sad truth is that many of us will fail over and over. And that we have all have a long way to go. Especially us young guys.<br /> <br /> You gotta be honest and realistic about life and business even if it means hurting your own feelings.</div>

It&#039;s the safe and most people succeed at it. <br /> <br /> What we are doing, by normal terms, is unsafe/risky. We know deep down inside that no matter how hard we try we can fail. In fact, we could work 1000x harder than a normal person, and take 10 steps back in life. Take me for instance. If my start-up fails, I&#039;m in debt and left with the worst possible thing that I could ever imagine...a 9-5 job. I think that we get pissed off because everything about &#039;normal&#039; is what we are trying to avoid.</div>

These are people in their upper 40s and 50s that get up every morning at 5:30 and fight traffic to work at a job every day so they can pay for their lease on their Audi A4 and their 30 year mortgage in the suburbs. They are working away until their 401k and their retirement investments hit &quot;the number&quot; and they stop to live modestly, without working, until death, hoping and praying that social security and medicare don&#039;t go bankrupt...<br /> <br /> I on the other hand, at just under 23 years old, get to choose if I actually want to work at all when I wake up tomorrow morning. My business takes care of me. I would probably have a good 2 years of income if I just decided to stop and do nothing, just renewing contracts who knows. I am basically at the point that they have been working 30 years towards. I did it in 2. Granted I am NOT rich, I do not drive a fancy car or live in a fancy house. Just a fairly nice apartment in a upscale suburb, I have no debt, I drive a high mileage Nissan SUV and play golf 3 times a week. I can also leave the country whenever I want, I don&#039;t have to answer to a superior and I can work from anywhere.<br /> <br /> I can&#039;t help but feel that I won at life, ALREADY, and I am not even to the good stuff yet. <img src="/community/imgs/emoticons/em-wink.png" class="smilie" loading="lazy" alt=";)" title="Wink ;)" data-shortname=";)" /></div>

My father is a multi-millionaire business owner. He doesn&#039;t think he&#039;s elite. His advice to me was get educated and get a degree (because in his opinion it shows that you&#039;re capable of sticking with something even if it&#039;s tough, an important trait in business apparently). After that I had the option of coming into the family business. I didn&#039;t, the industry it&#039;s in didn&#039;t interest me so I went my own route.<br /> <br /> His advice now is to break off at some stage and go into business for myself. I think that&#039;s good advice. I have started a business before and it failed, I am building another one again. It eventually failed. He went back to the slowlane for a while, then took a crack at a business again later in life. This time it succeeded. The funny thing is, despite him being the multi-millionaire business owner he considers me very successful for my age, it&#039;s weird because he sees me as more successful than I see myself.<br /> <br /> So there&#039;s certainly no feelings of elitism there on his part.</div>

I used to do residential in college. Making 75-100 bucks per closure isnt really a business it is a crappy job. I only place resi now if I know the person or do commercial business with them. My commercial customers use unbelievable amounts of energy. Millions of kwh per month, multiple locations and 5 year contracts or longer.<br /> <br /> I would need to close and maintain hundreds of sales per year to match one customer on the commercial side.<br /> <br /> This is why I play golf so much and it doesnt feel like I work very hard. I am networking. Meeting people who know people. It gets me in the door to the 2-3 very big fish per year.</div>
