This idea of a post has probably been done before, but that's also kind of the point of this post anyways.

Don't know what to do? What to invent? What business to start?

Pick a company that's winning (or was winning) using a unique business model.

Then, transfer that model to something else.

example:

Subway sandwiches
model: Pick your food, it slides along behind glass while someone assembles it according to your choices.
transfer:
Mexican version: Chipotle (5.5b revenue)
Pizza version: Mod pizza (400m rev)

Uber
model: go to an app, buy a service, an independent contractor comes to do it.
transfer:
House cleaning version: Handy (33m revenue)
Massage version: Soothe (currently has 11,000 therapists using their platform)

You don't need to be a fantastic inventor. There is tons of money to be made in well-worn industries. It doesn't even require a new business model, just a new model for that industry.

Yeah, we see that formula everywhere now. "It's like [ultra successful company], but for [different service/product]!" "It's the [company] of [service]!" Lots of companies making wheelbarrows of cash through this model so it's clearly a good way to think of an idea and market it.

We don't "see that formula everywhere now."

We've been seeing it for 1,000's of years!

Evolution is iterative, not revolutionary. Great artists copy and steal... The truth is, innovation usually means taking 2 normal things and combining them. Heck, sometimes it means taking 1 normal thing and just doing it the same way in a normal place where it is currently under-served!

I had somewhat similar thoughts not too long ago.

I'm not in the app market but my friend is, and he's a digital nomad so I chimed in:

Making a food delivery, rideshare, or common app of the like, but for countries that are third world and/or underdeveloped.

Like, does Georgia have an app for picking up and delivering laundry? Or how about wine? For dog walkers?

Feel like I've heard of people doing things like this and succeeding. Such as that young Bengali guy who was brutally murdered in NYC. He made the moped app for Nigeria.

Ha yeah, obviously people have been inspired by others' ideas since the dawn of humanity. I was referring more to the "It's like Netflix, but for video games!" or "We're the PayPal of weed dispensaries." type marketing and line of thought.
