Should I go into management?

Hello, this is my first real post. I have an opportunity to go into management at the fast food place I currently work. The only real reason I would go into management is to learn about management. Do you think this would be worth it? Are management skills valuable for every type of business? (I would prefer to start an online business.) If I should go into management to learn about it, how long? Working as a fast food manager even for a few months is something I don't want to do unless it's very useful. (I know, me me me, but I'm getting tired of that greasy, boring place...) Would it be good to try becoming a manager somewhere else?

Thanks for your help, I'm looking forward to spending time on this forum!

The first thing and probably the most important thing is you: are you going to enjoy doing this job? If this is not the case but this job can bring you good skills then it can be interesting too. It all depends on how long you are going to do this job. I'm not a management specialist, but if you think it will benefit you then go for it :)

Hey man, thanks for the input. While I think it will be more interesting, I'm confident that I won't like it. lol

So. Unless it gives you some really interesting skills, don't force yourself to do something you don't like. I think it will be better ;). Unfortunately, our time is running out

Not knowing your age or desired career goals, there are plenty of benefits you can gain by going into it that may serve you well in the future. Short of you intending on leaving in near term you may want to seriously consider doing it.

If you've never been in management (regardless of whether it's fast food or in corporate world), it's infinitely easier to get your first management job moving up within an org, rather than landing that job with no prior experience.

Besides any tactical hands on management skills you learn at that place (people management, software packages, scheduling, crisis/pressure management, etc) there are other transferable skills you can use in talking about your experience in the future...
1) someone felt you deserved the opportunity so were doing well in current responsibility
2) you took initiative to grow your responsibility
3) willingness to learn new things
etc, etc...

just some things to think about.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I'm currently 20 years old. I would like to start some sort of online business. Maybe generating leads, providing information or making some software to solve a problem. I'm not looking for a career in management. Also, I forgot to mention that most of the managers there spend a lot of time doing things that employees do, like working the grill, fulfilling orders and making shakes, but the GM said that he learned much more from actually being a manager than from going to college.

One of the reasons that I want to stop working in an enterprize is because I DO NOT want to be promoted as a manager. I am a project manager now for Finance projects. If I become a manager I will have to massage the egos of senior managers/ C leve execs, work more hours because they will have more expectations and also have my subordinates complaining about their cold lattes. All this for a measly 5 -10k EUR extra netto per year. So no thanks. Especially if I don't own the business and I do not see an extra dime if it goes well. Work ethic in business is only rewarded by more work. And then they are complaining for people "quiet quiting''.

Thanks for the thoughts! Yeah, being a manager at this fast food place usually comes with at least 10 hours overtime each week. Have you learned many useful skills related to business/entrepreneurship from being a project manager? I think my dad was a PM for a payroll software company for a little bit but went back to quality assurance.

I guess so..Nothing compared to trying selling stuff yourself..Eg I once tried selling my father's olive oil, and the skills I learned from that like promotion, communication, pricing for just one month that I tried were much more valuable than all these 2 years of PM.

Thanks for the knowledge. I couldn't reply earlier because I had to go be a wage slave for a few hours. I'm also impressed that your father made olive oil!

It is useful just like any other skill that could be useful.

Jobs are useful as they provide cash and domain knowledge for current or future business pursuits.

For people who see job as a mean (cash and business knowledge) rather than an end (work and promote and retire at 65), generally there is not much value in taking up bigger role/responsibility.

I would not be interested in management unless I want to get into the food service business.

Thanks for the thought. I definitely don't want to go into food service!

Yes and yes.

I took on a management role for the first time a year and a half ago, and the experience has been incredibly valuable in learning to understand human nature, especially motivation and competency ranges.

I could fill a book with the stuff I've learned in the last 18 months.

The specifics of what you learn will vary based on the nature of the work. I've learned how to give certain types of actionable feedback when I've reviewing drafts created by the graphic designers that I've hired to work on my side hustle, which is a type of feedback that I never would have learned at my day job. But at my day job, I have no choice but to deal with undermotivated employees every day, which is something I would never deal with (for long) working on my side hustle, and learning to deal with those undermotivated (or difficult) employees has been super valuable for me as well.

Seriously, if you get a chance to work as a manager, maybe don't plan on doing it forever, but see it as a solid learning opportunity and say yes.
