Hey, y'all, I am currently looking for things to solve and markets to approach.

I've recently discovered that there might be a need for a service that helps people connect mentors with mentees. Please share your opinion and feedback about mentorship and idea of manually connecting mentor with mentee.

Have you tried being a mentor? Do you have a mentor? What do you like or don't like about the concept of being a mentor or mentee?

Also, I've made a short form to discover the mentor side of the topic. Please fill it out, it takes around 40-55 seconds to do so!

  • Competent and successful people that could be your mentors are too busy doing their own work.
  • People offering you mentorship in exchange for money (life coachers, gurus etc.) are in the business of selling useless advice to desperate people.
This whole idea of mentorship was invented and heavily promoted by the self-help industry.

After they encourage you to isolate yourself socially from your mediocre friends and family, they tell you that having a mentor is the most important factor for success, but luckily for you, they offer their mentorship in exchange for money.

Having good role models and learning from other people's wisdom is extremely important.
But you won't be able to find this for sale anywhere. You will have to do the work yourself: read MJ's books, read autobiographies, read this forum, read success stories, watch interviews, learn to be attentive and you will absorb knowledge.

Whenever service is paid it stops being mentorship and becomes coaching. But I am specifically talking about mentorship, not guru-style coaching (which they call mentorship).

But I get why are you saying it and what you meant. Thank you for input and opinion :)

I would agree with 99% of what you have written but your first point can be separated from the rest.

When Sir Richard Branson wanted to start an airline he was given a lot of advice by Sir Freddie Laker.

And later on an 18 year old started an airline with one small plane in Southern England flying between Universities and Sir Richard Branson gave him some mentoring which made the news and then other business people gave him advice and investment.

The caveat being that the person being helped has already shown initiative in that broad field and piqued the interest of the mentor. The mentor has normally approached the mentee after reading or hearing about them.

For information purposes, the boy Richard heard about was obsessed with planes, had made a flight simulator game that he then sold, used some of his earnings to get a pilots license at 15, negotiated with a small regional airport and owner of a small plane and sold some tickets and had already done a couple of flights. Oxford local news ran a story about him which got picked up by national media and Richard read/saw about him and thought he would give him a call. But you can see why.

The other 99% is someone saying can you mentor me? Erm, no thanks. Which is where your self help twaddle comes from.
