He noticed some hits coming from a specific forum.
He joined the forum and commented in the thread.
He left valuable advice, returning to answer specific questions for over a year.
He never told people, "Buy my book and it will answer your question." He never tried to "sell" anyone anything. The closest he came was inviting people to a free conference he was hosting and directing them to the free content on his website.

I don't know how many actual sales generated from this, but it appears that a few people have signed up for his conferences and this thread has been read by hundreds of people on this site, several of which I am sure bought his book. He has also created much goodwill from a community of people who are very likely to at the least buy his book and recommend it to others. I know I did.
