As a software dev I see many SaaS companies fail due to a wrong or incomplete definition of SaaS. Avoid that trap.
Than as a guideline I would advise you to look at every process that duplicates with your number of customers/potential customers and automate it or if that is not possible make them pay extra.

For example: If you have a support hotline you will need more guys on phones when you have more customers. Reduce that problem by making the software more easy. Add help pages or a forum for self help. Don’t make it hard to find your number for help, but charge them for it and tell them up front.

Another example: When advertising your product on your homepage don’t write down „call us“ on the prices page. Give them a system for testing (automated) and allow them to select their payment option within the test system after their trail period.

If you ask yourself the question of “Can we just get ten times of… leads, customers, traffic? If the answer is no, change that.

To be able to scale with your whole company without adding more people is what makes SaaS so powerful. Running a software company that is not SaaS can still be very lucrative though, so it is not a must.
