One Day As An Erotic Writer And I'm Already Popular - Why Can't It always Be This Way?

Lol, this is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek rant.

The other day I posted my first erotic story on a website, and I'm already one of the most popular writers on there. I mean, it's great, and it's nice to be noticed, but I wish I could bag this kind of success with my "normal" writing. Shit, if it was this easy I'd be richer than JK now, just sit back and write and the people will come! (literally).

Clearly, I'm just doing this for kicks and pennies, but I wish I could learn something transferrable. All I've learned so far is, pretending to be a woman is advantageous in the world of erotic literature, and sex sells. I'm pretty sure I knew those things anyway, but it's nice to have them confirmed! Anyway, judging from the response so far, it won't be long before I have a website, Patreon and various ebooks and personalised stories.

Don't get me wrong, I will enjoy making money from this, but I want critical acclaim. I want to write stories that resonate throughout the ages, I want that magnum opus. But all that being said, I do enjoy a good bit of titillation, I've just got to accept I'm not winning any Booker Prize, or getting onto the Times Bestseller list any time soon.

And no, I'm not going to tell you the name of the site, or my pen name.

Perhaps you should treat this seriously and maybe leverage this into paid books?

I believe the universe can give us clues to the directions would should be moving.

Maybe the universe (some might even call it "God") is giving you a direction to take? A signal? A hint?

Your story sounds like it could be the start of something much larger than you think.

Life works in funny ways...

This is an idea that I was playing with in my head but I never acted upon it.

I am watching this.

Yeah, as the saying goes, life is what happens when you're busy making over plans.

I see a very clear funnel with this one, I think you're right, I just have to pick up the ball and run with it.

I've created my second story, however the site seems to take a long time to verify the content. This is annoying because it feels difficult to put out regular content.

There are also a lot of features of the site that are locked behind paywalls, so I'm trying to work out if all of the likes and attention are just a form of marketing to get you to sign up to their extra services. I hope not, but would not be surprised if so.

Today I'll try and find some other sites, although, the only reason I tried this one is because they seemed to have good traffic and the writers on there get good engagement.

We'll see, I probably just have to be patient, it's been about 14 hours since I posted and the site is probably based in the United States so we're on different time zones.

I hope this turns into a progress thread, so watch this space.

"God told me to make a lot of cash selling smut" -Nobody ever.

If this was some sort of supernatural inspiration, I don't think it was divine. At least not the God I believe in. Perhaps from the opposing side?

I know talking about religion on the forum is discouraged, but MJ kind of started it.

You should read the Old Testament sometime. It’s sex, genocide and the occasional unicorn (AV of course).

You are correct: this is not the place for religious debate. Having said that, I highly encourage you to read your beloved bible again. Genocide, rape, murder, bestiality, torture, etc. After that, you can then take a look into history to see all of the barbaric things humans have done to each other (and still do) because "God."

But you're right. "God" doesn't want OP writing smut. I'm glad we're really getting our priorities straight here.

Cheers.

I think he was making reference to the fact that it seems like this could prove a good move for me, seeing as it, on the surface at least, seems easier.

I personally don't believe in any of the current gods, so I don't have a problem with this course of action being against religious beliefs.

At least not the God I believe in.

And therein lies the divergence. What you believe in, and what I believe in, do not agree.

Beliefs precede decisions.

If one believes they can fly, they jump off a cliff.

As a former practicing Christian for 25 years, I completely understand that we need to align our beliefs with actions. I, for one, would not start a porn or smut business, but this is due to guiding, core principles and what feels right in my soul, over "God".

Your take reminds me of this idea, which didn't take me to atheism, but to a different idea of God removed from ancient human interpretation...

As you can imagine, the Mormon missionaries who ring my doorbell looking for coverts are in for an earful starting with my favorite line: "Sorry, but the further I distance myself from organized religion and their books, the closer I get to God."

I should start a thread on the conversations we've had here with the "doorbell ringing missionaries" here in the heart of the LDS mothership, but alas, it goes against the forum rules.

I think he was making reference to the fact that it seems like this could prove a good move for me, seeing as it, on the surface at least, seems easier.

Indeed, the market is saying "YES!" -- usually big careers start this way, ratifying an undiscovered talent that causes you to pivot.

Also, "smut" is a subjective term. Nora Roberts? Harlequin Romances? Fifty Shades of Gray? Or Penthouse letters?

Just a quick interjection. :)

Reality and G-d has infinite attributes. An infinite array of totally distinct but equivalent aspects or attributes of reality.

Kind of like how Descartes, Spinoza or Leibniz defined attribute.

Is G-d a man? Yes, but also a woman. Is he/she nature? Yes, but also human-like or anthropomorphic. No contradiction there whatsoever.

This is what makes these disagreements and confusions so powerful. It’s that something can be distinct yet equivalent at the same time.

This is actually why the economics of wealth creation is so confusing. Actor? Singer? Athlete? Author? LOL How?

It’s because wealth creation can happen under distinction and equivalency. Under A different attribute. Something can be the same yet different at the same time.

Admittedly, I don't consider myself to be an atheist. I do believe some form of "higher power" exists, but I don't believe it's the "God" that's sold to us. For all we know, we really are nothing more than some alien kid's tamagotchi. Furthermore, when it's finally my turn to die, even if I were to find out such a "God" exists, I'd more than likely resist. If nothing more than for the fact that they really are letting all of this bs happen. But of course, from here, we get into the "free will" debate, which ultimately leads to circular arguments.
As you can imagine, the Mormon missionaries who ring my doorbell looking for coverts are in for an earful starting with my favorite line: "Sorry, but the further I distance myself from organized religion and their books, the closer I get to God."
Love it. I'm an a**hole to people that try to sell me religious stuff at my door. I've learned over the years simply saying, "I already worship my lord and savior, Satan" typically ensures they never come back.

Don't get me wrong, I see the good religion can and does do. But I do believe religion is outdated in 2024, and I believe the future of humanity would be brighter without it.
Also, "smut" is a subjective term. Nora Roberts? Harlequin Romances? Fifty Shades of Gray? Or Penthouse letters?
Lol. I won't lie, when OP said, "smut" and then started talking about writing erotic fiction, I was in tears laughing. But I'm also a former degenerate, and former sex addict. To me, "smut" is nothing less than obnoxiously hardcore porn, but that's just me. There are people that get genuinely offended when they see people holding hands (projection, but still).

Cheers.

My second story has been approved and I'm just finishing the third and fourth in the series now. I've had a cracking idea for my next series and am excited to start.

As far as finding other sites go, I have researched a few and written to the editor of one of them. She wants to see a writing sample first, but having seen their other content I'm sure mine will fit nicely.

I want to build up an audience on these sites as quickly as possible so that I can start funneling to my Patreon and then my personal website.

Next week's goals:

Write a minimum of five stories. - Priority, high.
Start a Patreon page. - Priority high.
Research other erotic writers' websites and start designing my own. - Priority medium.
Research/start A tik-tok. Priority low-to-medium.
