<div class="bbWrapper">I think that is how you are going to get most of your downloads though. I&#039;d Cap That is targeted to any picture, yours is limited to dogs. Maybe open it up to any animal, or at least cats as well. So your targeted group is mostly females between 25-40, that cuts out a lot of people, now limit that down to dog owners, and that to iphone users. I think you need to figure out ways to hit a larger share of people.</div>

I don&#039;t think I really have the option of expanding DogCap to other animals because of the name, icon, captions, etc. I&#039;m pretty sure there is a large enough market for an app targeted at all dog owners because of the success of apps like Bowlingual Dog Translator and the dog whistle apps. <br /> <br /> I&#039;m guessing my main problem is the paid app &quot;barrier&quot;, especially considering the app is more of a novelty type app. Hopefully, with the release of a free version it will gain some attention and there will be less resistance to download.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Do you have it where people can upload their pictures to a central collection for everyone to view? Like iFunny. If you don&#039;t, I&#039;d do that, add ads to the bottom and let the app be free.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Update 8-2-12<br /> <br /> Currently have two new versions of the app waiting for review by Apple. I made an email signup splash page for the free version so maybe I can have a list to email for the launch day. <a href="http://www.appguerrilla.com/dogcap-free/" target="_blank" class="link link--external" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">AppGuerrilla.com/DogCap-Free</a><br /> <br /> I did some more keyword tweaking for this update and also changed the app name. I decided it would be better to have the app named &quot;DogCap-Caption Your Dog&#039;s Thoughts&quot; rather than &quot;DogCap-Your Dog&#039;s Thoughts Caught on Camera&quot;. I&#039;m realizing now how hard it is to get organic downloads and rank high in the app store so making a good first impression is HUGE. In hindsight I should&#039;ve had the app named that anyway.<br /> <br /> Lesson Learned #487 - Naming your app by it&#039;s function is much better than naming it based on uniqueness, cuteness, or originality. <br /> <br /> Also, changed the screenshots and added some flair to them with some descriptive graphics. <br /> <br /> <a href="https://www.thefastlaneforum.com/community/attachments/dogcap-webp.3347/" target="_blank"><img src="https://www.thefastlaneforum.com/community/data/attachments/0/651-7ab359173be506a7373d78f764186429.jpg?hash=xQ7D6K6YfQ" class="bbImage " style="" alt="dogcap.webp" title="dogcap.webp" width="195" height="280" loading="lazy" /></a></div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Wow, great job! I love hearing stories about people developing apps, it makes me think of the gold rush back in the day because there is so much money still to be made....<br /> <br /> I too have been developing an iPhone app (Contacts+) which is almost finished, and am looking for creative ways to market it like you have. It will be a business app that combines a business card function and also mass texting and emailing people. It seems like you are on the right track and have had some success with twitter.<br /> <br /> Do you recommend getting a twitter to promote it? I currently have a Facebook page for it -<span style="color: #FF0000">Link Removed by Runum </span>- and am trying to get the likes up. I have held some promotions and it still seems very hard to get people onto the page. What should I do guys?? I am also in the same boat as you, if I get my money back on this I will consider it a success because this is my first fast-lane attempt as well.<br /> <br /> Please review the page and let me know what I should do! Thanks</div>

I spent ~$50 and since last Sunday have 720 members. Also, upload picture that are similar to what your audience will like but maybe not exactly what your app does. Ask questions when you post something. Get them to comment, it will make it so some of their friends will see it. Spark interaction basically. Also, I sometimes tag people in the industry that like what I post, usually it is because their car is in the picture or they took it but it gets me more views. Just a few tips that have worked for me.<br /> <br /> Edit: I have 727 likes, got a few more in the last hour since I checked.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">I have heard that facebook ads really start racking up though, and can get into the 100&#039;s of dollars easily. Can you set a budget for them? <br /> <br /> Also I am reaching out to websites and blogs and am offering free promo codes to them to review it. Everyone says thats basically the best thing to do.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper"><blockquote data-attributes="" data-quote="MCaruso" data-source="post: 223923" class="bbCodeBlock bbCodeBlock--expandable bbCodeBlock--quote js-expandWatch"> <div class="bbCodeBlock-title"> <a href="/community/goto/post?id=223923" class="bbCodeBlock-sourceJump" rel="nofollow" data-xf-click="attribution" data-content-selector="#post-223923">MCaruso said:</a> </div> <div class="bbCodeBlock-content"> <div class="bbCodeBlock-expandContent js-expandContent "> I have heard that facebook ads really start racking up though, and can get into the 100&#039;s of dollars easily. I usually sent mine to about $50 total, then set a CPC cap so I don&#039;t spend too much per click. I&#039;d like a couple thousand fans before launch and think I can do it.<br /> <br /> And yes, sending promo codes and getting them to review it I hear is the best way. That is why I focused most of my efforts on that. I talked to hundred, literally hundreds, of facebook groups and asked if I send them a promo code if they would review and share my app. So far, the number of fans of agreeing pages is about 3.5mil(This number grows and the pages get more fans as well, my app won&#039;t be out till the end of September so this could be closer to 4mil if not more then). That does not count blogs/websites, which I also have some very big ones that said they would take a look. Some of those sites are magazines too which could be huge.<br /> <br /> I didn&#039;t hear back from every group, so what I plan to do is when it released send them another message. If I have any promo codes left that aren&#039;t already promised to accepting groups, I will send them to other pages. I will pick out the pages that are the largest and/or most likely to share imo. <br /> <br /> It is time consuming to find and email all these groups and sites but when you have groups with 500k or 1mil fans say they will check it out and help, thats huge. I only go after targeted groups so I could have a large percent download it based on a post. Plus Facebook has sharing so if you have people sharing....you could have TONS and TONS of people seeing your app and then downloading it. Then maybe groups who never responded see one page post it and then they share it too, spider effect.<br /> <br /> The time emailing and prospecting now will payoff huge later.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Those are some great tips! Thats the same with me, I would like to get a few thousand fans before launch if possible. I will try out the facebook ads though. I have emailed many groups and am just awaiting their response.<br /> <br /> Heres another question, do you think twitter is better than facebook in promoting an app? I&#039;ve heard this from many people and want to create an account, I just have never used twitter before so I would need to a quick crash course. Everyone says that its much easier to get twitter followers than facebook fans, how do you do this?</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">I can&#039;t really comment on twitter. I haven&#039;t really used it but I should. I think I will set that up right now actually. I feel like you get a lot of people who follow you just in hopes of you following back. I need to read about how to acquire more targeted followers on twitter though.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Hows things going with this?</div>

<div class="bbWrapper"><blockquote data-attributes="" data-quote="wade1mil" data-source="post: 227241" class="bbCodeBlock bbCodeBlock--expandable bbCodeBlock--quote js-expandWatch"> <div class="bbCodeBlock-title"> <a href="/community/goto/post?id=227241" class="bbCodeBlock-sourceJump" rel="nofollow" data-xf-click="attribution" data-content-selector="#post-227241">wade1mil said:</a> </div> <div class="bbCodeBlock-content"> <div class="bbCodeBlock-expandContent js-expandContent "> Retweet by Chad Mureta? It was really cool to know that Chad took the time to look at my app. Now he just needs to contact me to cross-promote haha<br /> <br /> <br /> <blockquote data-attributes="" data-quote="oddball" data-source="post: 227242" class="bbCodeBlock bbCodeBlock--expandable bbCodeBlock--quote js-expandWatch"> <div class="bbCodeBlock-title"> <a href="/community/goto/post?id=227242" class="bbCodeBlock-sourceJump" rel="nofollow" data-xf-click="attribution" data-content-selector="#post-227242">oddball said:</a> </div> <div class="bbCodeBlock-content"> <div class="bbCodeBlock-expandContent js-expandContent "> Hows things going with this? </div> <div class="bbCodeBlock-expandLink js-expandLink"><a role="button" tabindex="0">Click to expand...</a></div> </div> </blockquote><br /> Things are going ok. The paid app has received around 150 downloads over the past 6-7 weeks it has been live. The paid app had nearly screeched to a halt in downloads but after the release of the free version the paid app is now averaging 1-5 paid downloads per day. <br /> <br /> With the free version I am averaging about 100 downloads per week since it&#039;s release earlier this month. I am monetizing the free app, but with only several hundred downloads the iAd figures aren&#039;t really worth mentioning.<br /> <br /> These numbers aren&#039;t exactly what I was hoping for, but I am thankful for every single download so far. I am proud that I took an idea, took a chance and made something happen. I have learned a lot over the past few weeks and have really benefited from the experience I acquired while attempting to make business and press contacts. My biggest accomplishment thus far though? - I produced &#039;something&#039; and now that &#039;something&#039; is generating wealth, however small, while I sleep. My plans now are to continue to promote DogCap via social media and begin drawing up plans for my next app that I plan to release sometime in December 2012.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Speed++<br /> <br /> You are one of the few who takes action and its great. Even if you aren&#039;t doing as well as you wanted to, you learned a lot and you can still make it happen. Continue contacting blogs/facebook pages/twitter accounts/etc and see if they will still share it. Could spike downloads a couple hundred of thousand downloads. Maybe see if another pet/animal app with cross promote with you.</div>

I&#039;m still pushing and definitely not giving up. Thanks for the encouragement. And somehow I completely overlooked cross promoting with an animal app. Considering the size of my niche then I might just have a developer out there willing to do so. Thanks for the tip!</div>
