So far I have kept this close to my vest, but I really want to put this out here. For one, I firmly believe that stating one's intention publicly is the primary step towards etching your goals deep in your mind. And second, I want to be accountable to all of you and use your support and karma to help propel my business towards my vision.
Intention
In the next one year, specifically by Dec 1, 2011, my personal finance/wealth/lifestyle website will have the same authority, trust and reach as Kiplinger.com and SmartMoney.com. Which means that I will attract 7-8 million visitors to the site every month.
Plan
This site is now 2 years old and has built a good following and reputation in its niche. This is now time to take it to the next level and move to the Fastlane.
My plan revolves around 3 main areas:
1. Marketing - To reach a million people, I will need to market the web site to many more millions. At the same time, I need to make judicious use of my capital. I have broken down my marketing plan in 2 different phases as follows:
Phase 1 - Focus on improving organic search rankings and grow traffic from there as quick hits. This will also allow me to generate revenues for Phase 2 work. I have already started doing major SEO work on the site and improving its ranking and the results are starting to show.
Phase 2 - Build a brand and make it visible. I have ideas on how to do this effectively which I will not share right now.
Social media promotions are going to be present in both the phases.
Took me more than a year to realize that Brand building is going to be crucial for the success of this business as a great brand name is what creates real barriers to competition and gives you the ability to charge premium ad rates.
2. Content - I have set up this site from the outset to be a site that other people write for and provide content. So far I have over 50 writers writing for the site on a fairly regular basis, a few of these are also published authors. However, currently I average 4-5 posts per week. To reach my goal I will need as much as 10 new posts per day.
I will reach this posting frequency by aggressively marketing to new bloggers and writers as well as hiring freelancers to write on a schedule.
To make this happen, I am working to set up a freelance content management system that I can use to give assignments and track progress among other things.
3. Monetization - I currently do run ads and that do generate revenues for me but I am working on other ways to monetize the site including premium content, informational products, subscriptions, etc. Additionally, due to the niche I am in, and due to the fact that the site is going to become a premium brand, I will be able to charge premium ad rates.
So why is my goal not stated in $ terms? I know that if I achieve the goals stated above, the money will flow. I do not want to pick a $ number and let that become a limiting influence (such as when I hit my $ goal, I might want to slow down and relax for a bit).
I am aiming high, very high, and I will get there.
