Don't worry, I'm not rushing in. I actually am just starting the first steps now and aim to buy a home in maybe 2 years. What I would love is to hear from people who either made their own homes and what they would do different, or from people that know pitfalls I must avoid (I don't want to make it and then sell it cuz something sucks and then lose money. I want to make it an asset that is deluxe and aesthetic, not the perfect rent a room place in case I need to sell).
I used to study some architecture way way back, and I'm going to be delving into that soon so I can transfer some ideas to my architect or at least source one better or worst comes to worst design it myself and have my friends correct it (I have a few friends that have designed some hotels and such so I'll give them a call).
The price range is about 1 million to 5 million, for the type of house I'm thinking of. That price can be distributed in whatever way, property location, size, nuance, effort it takes to perfect the design, whatever, just so long as it is justified.
And by justified I mean that the following things must be avoided, location desperation, size just for the sake of it, overly nuanced and fancy in a way I won't notice or care about, effort spends all the money and leaves nothing left, etc.
I'm open to all kinds of variation, and really I'd like to gain enough perspective in these next 2 years that when I am positioned to buy I can do so gracefully.
Is there anything anyone can add, to help make this idea closer to reality (and btw, if I don't buy it, I know some friends who just might if I get this right, so this isn't merely speculative, its just open ended and my initial estimate is at about 2 years before it is built).
Beyond what I've shared and the will to do this thing right, I don't know much else. Any contribution anything I should keep in mind, is more than what I can do with this alone, so thankyou for your help if any of you do decide to.
