Hi.
I'm a portuguese family guy in my late forties, worked at a couple corporate IT jobs for more than 25 years and, when the housing crisis hit the world, I ended up in the unemployment line, wife as well, and small three kids to feed. I ended up living off my hard-earned savings while brushing up the "resume mode" and going back to university for new skills (and more debt). After paying off stupid credit cards and car loan debts from the so called middle class illusion lifestyle, savings evaporated quickly and I found myself at point zero at 45 y.o.
what hurt me the most was that I was always drawn to working for myself from a very young age (actually did some early shareware stuff in the late 90s) but never got outside my little comfort zone to really make anything happen.
In summary, wasted almost 3 decades of my life in a useless race to get nothing in return from a system that I've been indoctrinated since early age to feed off my time (life) in this planet.
Anyway, once I had no income coming in, I rapidly started freelancing online (initially programming gigs, and later specializing in writing trading indicators and algos for forex trading platforms), for several of the following years while getting low-paying IT support dayjobs, both day and night shifts, just to pay the bills, diapers, medicals, etc.
I started daytrading forex and started to become better and better at it, writing algos to trade and getting some company interested in investing in my skills to build their automated operation. This is still a "job proxy", not "safe" nor a way into the fastlane, but I'm now at least able to consider scaling up my income throught becoming "funded" by some of the online prop firms that are popping up in this industry, and a way of getting the capital to both sustain myself and getting into the first steps of the business.
I guess it's never too late to escape the rat race.
Through my learning of the books and forum content, I aim to build an "hedge fund" style of business in my country, this being something that doesn't really exists here as a "mainstream" product, even for higher net worth clients.
I also hope to meet like-minded people in this forum who eventually have similar objectives and would like to discuss more the specifics of building private companies and products in the finance industry, within the EU zone.
