I don't know which is the most appropriate forum to post this to so I apologise in advance.

Short background: 25 years old / No kids or wife. I was born in a third world country and ever since I was young I never saw myself living there. The pollution, traffic, people, government, strict religious rules and just the overall lifestyle there just make me sick and depressed. I have a degree in Computer Science and some experience working as a software developer. It is a high demand skill so I used that as my golden ticket to move to another country, Australia to be specific. I got a company sponsored visa so I was able to live here. As soon as I moved here, my lifestyle greatly improved and my depression was cured cause I love it here. I felt like I found the place where I belong.

But there is a price for everything, in order to keep my visa, I have to walk the Slowlane (it has a restriction that you have to keep working for the company that sponsors you). I love everything I do outside the office but every single minute of my work makes me sick because I keep thinking to myself, "I should be working on my Fastlane dreams" not sucking up to my bosses and building there dreams. My main issue was time (like most of us). The only time I have to work on my Fastlane dreams is after working hours. I told myself I'll just have to wait 1 more year till I become a permanent resident then I would be free but this isn't my main problem.

My worst nightmare came last March. Due to the Covid pandemic, our company cut-off a lot of people including me. Now I'm really lost because in order for me to keep living here I have to find another job that would sponsor my visa (usually, it's already difficult to find one that sponsors but now it's 100x more difficult with the pandemic). I had some interviews but I got rejected. I also don't have motivation to find a new job because I know I won't be able to perform 100% cause I don't really like working in Slowlane and I should be working on my Fastlane dreams. Now I'm in danger of going back to my country (and a lot of people our dying due to the virus)

My question is, does anyone here has a similar situation where they don't like the country they live and found ways to simultaneously work on their Fastlane dreams while being able to migrate to a new country? Is that even possible? Of course, I'd prefer to do that in Australia but doing that in another country is fine as well (depends on the country). Our country's passport is one of those passports that has minimal power so we can't easily get working holiday visas (even getting a tourist visa to Australia is a long work) and the best way for me to move into another country is to get sponsored as a Software Developer.

I'm currently building an app that I would be selling soon and I'd love to build that while living in another country not my home country.

Your back is up against the wall and you need to hustle to make the slowlane happen and maintain that work visa. It's not ideal, but a job is just a means to an end. Fastlane is a mindset and where you are currently going, not where you currently are.

You are a software developer, so I'd reckon whether you're building your app or taking on another fastlane endeavor in the future, it will be location independent. Might as well do it in a country that you love to be and where you see your future.

If so, do whatever you can to find that job. Apply wherever you can for whatever position you can, even if it's a super low salary.

the_cipher said:

I also don't have motivation to find a new job because I know I won't be able to perform 100% cause I don't really like working in Slowlane and I should be working on my Fastlane dreams.

Seriously? You have a golden ticket out of a country you hate. At this point it should be irrelevant whether it's slowlane or fastlane. It's just one year and you can legally live in IMO one of the best countries in the world. If this doesn't motivate you to find a new job then I don't know what to say.

I am also 25 y/o living outside my country and I know what you feel. The slowlane in my case is (university/work) for the past 3 years, and in addition to that I've had a language barrier. All that time I was thinking how great would it be if I could finally start my fastlane journey, but looking from the perspective I believe I have made a right decision to stay humble and study/work (I even don't have time for sidehustle). Back then I didn't know the culture/language of the country I was living in so it would be really hard to make deals and understand the needs of the local population. The thing that acutally helped me was to focus on one/two tasks at a time. I would invite you to do the same, you will save yourself stress and grief. Focus on getting that job in order to get your permanent resident, treat it as a part of your fastlane process, and organise your day in a way so you can work that 3 hours on your side hustle, and then be patient as would Gary Vaynerchuck say.

To summarise:
You need a job to get visa sponsorship to stay in a wonderful country.

You resent working slowlane in a job that got you the visa to get out of your country.

You want to devote all your energy to your Fastlane endeavors without having to suffer the hardship of your own country or working slowlane.

You haven't mentioned if you can actually support yourself whilst not working slowlane.

I'd say come to the UK although we're poised to take the second spot for covid deaths.

Where are you from? There may be someone from your country here that could provide insight.

High Growth, less regulation, large population and cheaper overhead/labor cost.

Whereas in a developed place like Australia it is better for you to migrate there once you have a lot of money and the country will welcome you.

Probably that could motivate you to do business in your home country?

There are entrepreneurs that MOVED OUT of countries like USA or AU.
Some even went to Africa to have lower cost of living AND higher standard for that low cost.

Is there any way that you could auto-sponsor you? Starting your fastlane business (assuming you already have the concept) and that business being your employer?
Even it being a long shot, I am not familiar with Australia regulations so I would not know if that is a possibility.

In the US, the only way you can self sponsor for a non-immigrant work visa is to invest $100k+ in your own business and it has to be making good money within 3 years (E2 Visa)

Thanks for the amazing responses guys and it made clear up things on my end. I came from the Philippines.

After some introspection, I realised it's my pride and impatience taking over. I don't want to find a "job" because it's Slowlane but like what one of you said, "Fastlane" is a state of mind. I just have to be patient and suck it up till I get that residency, I'm already around 70% with my residency process so I'd say just keep pushing. At this stage, I'd prefer doing "Slowlane" here temporarily rather than doing "Fastlane" in my home country. Thanks for the motivation. This is just me making excuses but another big factor that demotivated me was the constant rejection due to the lack of opportunities with the current economy crashing and they prioritise Australian residents in the market but by using Fastlane principles of keep trying, I'll just stay strong.

Being a software developer in Australia, I saved a decent chunk of money that has heaps of value when you convert it to countries with lower economic standards. Getting a job now may increase your chances of fastlane success much more in the long run than building your app.

I am a software scientist too, and my dream is leaving in the USA. Maybe I can get a visa to work in the United States, but I also know that probably I am not going to have a lot of time to work in my projects.

My goal is to create a fastlane life here, where I can live with little money and one day I can get a visa, or move to another country at least, without work to somebody else.

I don't know where are you from, but I know the feeling to live in a hopeless country, like Argentina, where you can live comfortably if you earn in dollars but you have a lot of crime and a socialist government who always is thinking how to take your money to give it to someone who doesn't produce anything.

You are in the middle, you left your country and you are very close to get a full visa to do whatever you want, try to push harder. If I was in your situation I do my best to stay in the country that I love, save more money and quit the second after I get my passport to a new life.

A friend of mine wanted to do the self sponsoring.
He was told, that his business doesn’t have to invest money, but must be valuable for Australia.
And there will come a program for young entrepreneurs.
But I don’t know exact.
Maybe its worth to dig a bit deeper!

I think it is time to think abt what your higher priority is and solve the issue one by one. If moving to Australia is a higher priority finding a job would be a better choice.

There is always chance to set the ground for your business in the future when visa is not a limiting factor. In the IT industry you can build network and identify future needs and clients.

You can always offer free IT service to "future clients"as good view for proof of concept when you are working for a full time job.
