Folks,

Unfortunately I had to disable the invisible mode for all users except MODS and the Millionaires sub-group. It seems more and more people are setting themselves to invisible which gives the forum an appearance of emptiness to a would-be-user.

I frequently visit and the online now panel shows 10 users and 1/2 of them are invisible. Since unregistered/registered users don't see the invisible people, this gives an impression to prospective forum registrants/participants that the forum is not being visited.

No one wants to join an empty forum.
No one wants to participate in a community that *appears* vacant.

Users can disable their PM's if this helps.

This move is temporary until more activity is achieved.

Thank you for your understanding.

~ MJ

I don't quite understand why there is an invisible mode. What is its purpose, other than hiding the fact that you're signed on to the forum?

It doesn't seem to go along with a good community atmosphere to even have such a feature. I actually check to see who else is signed on just about everytime I stop by for a visit. It is nice to know who is visiting while I am here.

I was using it for a few reasons, not that important though, I guess I'll have to reach millionaire status!

Dang, there was an invisible mode
and I missed the chance to use it?

What other superhero skills do we have available to us?

I wouldn't mind time travel
(if you're taking suggestions).
That would help a LOT with my stock picking.

I think people were using it just so they can view the forum uninterrupted which is perfectly understandable.

When people see you online they PM you ... and if you have an unanswered PM and you are online, some might find it like you are ignoring them. This really isn't the case so I hope no one is offended.

At this point I'm flirting with shutting down my PM box because I don't want to get people upset if I can't answer their PM's timely. Not sure which is better, having it off, or having people disillusioned because I haven't been very good in responding quickly. I know Diane and Russ have had their PMs off for the same reasons as I can imagine the multitude they'd receive.

Ahhh... you see, you guys are too friendly.
If you're grumpy like me
and are upfront about checking your PM weekly
(or monthly or annually),
people won't get upset when you ignore them.
They'll figure you ignore everyone.

Plus everyone knows bunching tasks is more efficient.
I can't see how people would expect anything else.

Ya gotta set those expectations.

As for the PM box, I would be shocked to hear that people expect a timely response for you or anyone else. I PM with several people on this forum almost daily and I've never thought twice if it takes longer than usual for them to get back to me. ...I hope they feel the same way.

I like what Kimber said, just lay some ground rules if you're finding yourself tethered to this forum more than you'd like. This is a great community, and I'd think that everyone here would support you drawing a line in the sand regardless of your reasons.

Shh... (looking right then left and leaning in once it appears the coast is clear) You do have time travel... you can go back in time...to the beginning of the forum... and you can bring it into the present if you want by posting...shh...don't tell...the wonder of the power :hl:

I am happy to take pm's with regards to apartment investing. General questions are always better when posted on the forum so that all can see them. I sometimes get pm's that point me to a post that I may have missed.

I assume that since my knowledge is very pointed toward one subject, I may get less than some of you.

I just liked lurking, but I rarely get access to the internet other than a rare time or two at home or on a special lunch break where I actually stop working for a minute. In any case, I don't mind being visible =)

JesseO is crazy...if he is home, he has access to at least one fully functional, internet ready computer at all times. :p I'm not sure why he considers himself having internet access "a rare time or two at home". Lol.
