Hey Y'all!
Hope all is well with everyone this fine Monday. I just wrapped up the Fastlane book and really appreciate all the insights MJ DeMarco gave. I always felt like something was wrong with me because I couldn't "assimilate" into a typical 9-5 job, feeling depressed/etc among other things. This book made me realize I am not alone and I am looking forward to working with y'all here on the forums and keep you updated on my business project!
One story I will tell (It's a dewsy...
). Prior to reading this book, I started a coffee business to "follow my dream" got upset at work one day and just said "I really just want to roast coffee and fix computers..." thus Coffee & Computers were born! I started at the Farmers market and gained traction to where folks would constantly ask "Where/when will you setup a coffee shop?" I did just that and the coffee shop itself failed. I couldn't drive enough traction to the business even utilizing ads, chamber, and various other resources. I pulled out of the building location and focused on what worked which was pop ups and the farmers market.
Now I am sure, you all are laughing as I was, after all the coffee shop references in MJ DeMarco's book, my nephew and I were laughing our asses off given what I had jumped into. While I'll keep this as a side / passion project, I am going to look to keep this as more of busy work in my retirement for my other fastlane objectives. While most folks would see this as a failure, I don't and here is why.
- I learned about LLCs, State & Federal Taxes, COGs, and other aspects of how to run a business.
- I learned that even if people tell you to do "X", it isn't always the right decision.
- I learned how to build a basic website, utilize google ad marketing, branding, and other various tools/ventures.
- I learned how to hire employee's, the good/bad/ugly here, and wound up helping them by getting them other jobs in the community.
- I can now roast coffee at a price from anywhere from $4-$9 a lb (and sorry, I'll never go back to store bought bags.)
- I met a lot of great people, things I would never take for granted.
I am probably preaching to the choir here but if you have an idea, don't be afraid to execute on it. You will learn from the experience and who knows, maybe it will take off! If it doesn't, look at all you learned in the process!
My next steps is to post my story, do some research on the forums here, look to help others out / give advice on the limited knowledge I have, and drive toward what MJ DeMarco said, look for a need and execute on that. My line of work is in Cyber Security so I am going to listen to the needs of our business and clients; maybe jump on in on the consulting side of things, keeping my ears tuned in on the process.
Looking forward to working with y'all and thank you again for reading my story!
