I discovered this forum from reading Unscripted after a non recommended it to me on 4chan. I appreciated the message of the book but at the time I was not the target audience. I was winning the rat race. I had a very well paying big tech job that had gotten even more insane after stock appreciation. I was pushing $800k. I was absolutely miserable despite this. The job wasn’t hard. It was mind numbing and soul crushing. I considered walking away many times but the golden handcuffs kept me there.
It all came crashing down recently when I was laid off as a part of “corporate restructuring”. What really happened was I was deemed to be making too much money on my package and was shown the door.
I got a generous severance and have about 18 months of cash on hand before I get to my investments. I defaulted to trying to find another big tech job but I am getting tired of begging for work. I am looking for alternatives. It’s scary because I have a new son and my wife is not working but deep down I know I have never fit in corporate America.
I have founded a “startup” before that raised funds and didn’t make money. I am here to find ideas to pursue. While I am a high end SWE I don’t want to limit myself to software ideas, but I am not necessarily opposed. I am also open to partnering with someone who my skills compliment.
