Income tax for the self-employed?

I'm a sub contractor. The contractor that I work for pays my company directly (I get paid per hour, not per completed job).

The cheques I receive are the full amount. Example, say I make $20/hr and I work 20 hours.

I get a cheque for $400 addressed to my trade name/company.

When and how do I pay taxes?

It's amazing to me how much of a failure our education system is. For instance, I can measure the sides and angles of various geometric shapes... but I have no idea how I'm supposed to pay my taxes.
