Hey guys, so I'm finishing high school in a bit more then a month and with a gymnasium I'm expected to go to uni. The problem is, my parents. Mom and dad want me to be a vet (we live outside of town in sort of a village). The thing is; I want to make my own fastlane business. Vet university lasts for 5 YEARS + 3 YEARS if i want a master (5 years for bachelor). When i talk to my mom i realize that she expects me to finish college get a job and work for the rest of my life. She's very brainwashed by society, especially other moms she hangs out with who always brag about their children(you know, my son is going to this uni, my daughter got this scholarship.... etc.). Not going to uni is probably impossible; she'd freak. So what do i do? There's a local uni that caught my eye; it's a 2 year IT course. Finishing it i am a "Professional specialist in information technology". It's sole purpose is to educate and prepare students for jobs in the IT sector. I've also applied for a scholarship test in a paid university for Software engineering. Any advice? I have no idea what to do.... Any advice is VERY VERY VERY appreciated. Also, the 2 year college is free i think (tax financed) and I don't see a Bachelor's degree mentioned.

Here's literally what the course page says: (used google translate so sorry for any mistakes)

The professional study "Information Technology" started with the academic year 2018/19, when over 80 students were enrolled. The study lasts 4 semesters with a total of 16 compulsory courses and Industrial Practice and Final Project, thus achieving a minimum of 120 ECTS credits. The duration of each semester is 15 weeks. Candidates for enrollment in this study program must have completed a four-year high school. The size of the groups is defined by the Standards and norms for the field of higher education of the Sarajevo Canton. Professional study is realized within the Department of Mathematics.

Students have the right to transfer to the next year of study within one cycle of studies a maximum of 12 ECTS study credits or a maximum of two failed courses regardless of evaluation, provided that the failed course transferred to the next academic year is not a prerequisite for listening to courses in that academic year.

This program study aims to provide professional development and training of staff (programmers) for the needs of IT through two years of professional training with the possibility of passing students to the first cycle of studies in the field of Theoretical Computer Science.

The main goal of the two-year professional study is to provide candidates with knowledge and skills that qualify them for access to work in the IT sector. During their studies, participants acquire knowledge and competencies from various fields of information technology and computer science, which enable them to learn the necessary information systems at all levels of integration in a wide range of appropriate problems. The acquired knowledge and skills can be applied to various information systems used by various software companies or other institutions that have a need to use specific computer applications.

The professional title that is acquired is: Professional specialist in information technology

Parents are indoctrinated into the old order of thinking where you get a degree, it has value and you go off to your safe job with your steady wage.

We now live in the new order where most degrees are worth less each year and job opportunities are at a premium with employers well aware of this fact.

That said - looking back I probably wouldn't have bothered with an education in IT. If you want to be a developer what you really need is an understanding of business + value and a portfolio of completed projects that don't look like they are examples from your $100 bootcamp.

Even security - I believed for years you needed the full track record to get into security, but now you can start as a talented sys-admin - get CISSP certified and get into relatively decent paying jobs precluding those requiring clearance. If you're full stack stack with security knowledge you can also get by.

My advice to most young people now is work hard for 6 months to a year getting a portfolio, then work at a start up/freelance and grow your skills whilst getting paid and then you'll have experience to take into most places. In this time also try to move to a city and go to regular coding/IT meet ups and network with people - learn how to inspire and create mystery and people will give you opportunities as they start their own projects.

First, I would like to understand why bachelor takes 5 and not 3 years as it is usual in other countries. If you want to pursue an IT career as entrepreneur, I would suggest to take the synergies from university to have a fallback solution. Also, you will be able to work on your business next to your study while you grow your experience. Do not think it is an this way or another, you can make both things work. Especially, when you do get employee experience you can see much more easily where value might lie around.

In a nut shell:
Bachelor in IT, not just the professional, but just ifnthree years. Five is too long.
Public university course with no costs
Try yourself in a side business approach

I believe it depends on your personal goals (how fast you want to become rich and how rich you want to become) and it depends on your risk tolerance.

I mean you could just ignore what your parents say and go full steam ahead into building a business and against all odds smash it out of the park but what if you failed and had to restart all over again a few times?

I think it makes sense when you're under 30 to get qualified to boost your active income past what you need to survive and that enables you to fund your business (seed capital).

Example get qualified just enough to get a job that pays you enough to save a few hundred to £1000+ and create side gigs on the weekends. Then invest all of that into your business.

Note: Security doesn't guarantee rich but being rich guarantees security and if you are under 30, you got a lot of mistakes, but having 0 money to live off and no money to pursue anything doesn't make sense.

Also we can't live for others no matter how much we love them

The thing is; I want to make my own fastlane business.
Fastlane is a mindset. A journey. A process. Though, there's nothing stopping you. If you want to start an internet business, there are multiple threads on here that provide you with a framework. Digital-marketing, ecommerce, paid-ads, personal-brands. (You name it. And they're FREE)
There's also multiple detailing B2B business process and side-hustles. Lawn-mowing, reselling, cleaning-services...

hen i talk to my mom i realize that she expects me to finish college get a job and work for the rest of my life. She's very brainwashed by society, especially other moms she hangs out with who always brag about their children(you know, my son is going to this uni, my daughter got this scholarship.... etc.).
I grew up in an Asian family ruled by the fear of not having a formal education. I definitely resonate with this. To be honest, they don't know any better. They're trying the best to raise you "right" according to what they know. Know your purpose, smile-acknowledge them, and do your thing.
Not going to uni is probably impossible; she'd freak. So what do i do?
I dropped out last year after I made money from my side hustles, so my opinions may be bias. Take it with a grain of salt. I'll be honest, If your pain and desire is strong enough, you wouldn't have to post this thread. The only person that knows your situation better than anyone else, is yourself. If I were in your shoes, I'd do abit of soul-searching and see what are the cost-benefits. I for sure knew I wanted out of Uni after my first year and it didn't matter what my mom/dad/peers think because it tortured me more when I was half-assing classes than going all out and failing business ideas. The dreadful feeling of not wanting to wake up because of your "requirement" classes is a feeling that pushed me off a cliff. Again, though there's no black/white here. College and Uni offers social experiences and connections you may miss if you choose to not go. If your purpose and heart is steel, this doesn't matter. Following the entrepreneurial path open you up to people you may resonate more with and experiences that can push you toward the "fastlane". However. Your emotions will be a roller coaster and you will have to swallow and chew glasses on a daily basis. Pick your poison.
Any advice? I have no idea what to do.... Any advice is VERY VERY VERY appreciated.
Think for yourself and weigh the options! Establish your on truth and carve your on path. If you let us think for you, you're just relying on us instead of your caring parents. Ironic, wahahaha?
Also, the 2 year college is free i think (tax financed) and I don't see a Bachelor's degree mentioned.
"Free" is not free because it require a payment of 2 years of your life. If your hunger is strong enough, then this 2 years may worth thousands upon thousands of dollars. 2 years is a long time if you know what you're doing. Though, 2 year is short as hell if you're dazed and walking blindly, sleeping-eat-follow the norm-repeat. If your drive is "eh", then it might be better off to float the boats for a while and try some ideas as you attend classes. Let the your hunger develop as you see if the classes do you any well :).

TBH, we're young man. Compared to some of the veterans here, we're newborns. No wrong option. Think slooowly, but act fast. You just have to make a decision BY Yourself, and don't look back.

University isn’t the only choice and I 100% agree with it but it can help IF choosing the right course and having the right people around you, professors for feedback and focusing on your subject. To add, universities although sometimes outdated can give valuable info on topics (e.g. Business) such as Responsible Business, Business and Law Contracts, Financial Analysis, Project Management in way more detail.

In my situation I live in the UK, and I am going to university in a couple of weeks. I am still working on my Fastlane idea and job and hey, if my business makes enough money for me to be financially independent, I can quit both university and my job. If not, I have a backup plan and hopefully a degree that means I don’t have to work only retail jobs to act as a foundational job + business funding. University loans here are more lax as you get the loan from the Department for Education (Student Loans Company) and you only pay back a small amount when you earn something like £27,000 or more a year, automatically every month. It's sort of as a tax like National Insurance and when you go under that x amount per year, you don’t pay. After 30 years it gets written off. Every year they change the min yearly salary when you start paying back the loan a bit, anyone interested can read online how it works.

You can also meet a lot of friends and join communities such as Entrepreneurship / Business clubs in that university. I will add that US universities is something I am not familiar with and If I was there, I WOULD really think well about paying extraordinary amounts of money to attend one.

Anyway, you can try university and see if you like it / if it works out for you. You can read and hear from others but you'll never know for sure until you try it yourself.

Just don't go to college.

It is mind numbingly weird to me how you spineless kids don't even have the balls to tell their mommy they aren't going to listen to her.

I'm not bragging or anything, but I can remember multiple times I've told my parents "Shut the F*ck up, I don't want to live your mediocre life" and that was the end of it. Yeah, you get a slap in the face, but who cares?

The number one thing holding you back is being a spineless coward. Period.

I'd say one of the biggest traits that separates low-level retards from people who actually get ahead in life is they have a fundamental understanding of power. They can say "no" more often because they understand most people can't actually force you to do anything. What's your mommy going to do, send you to a Russian Gulag? Murder you? She's going to argue with you and cry and say words and maybe slap your a$$ around a little bit. So what? Who gives a shit?

Always do what YOU want to do with YOUR life. The idea of letting others steer your ship is so obviously stupid.

This whole thread and OPs question do not make any sense! University will not prepare you for entrepreneurship, no matter what you study. Trust me, I tried both. Quite the contrary, you will be exposed to more people who are subscribed to the scripted lifestyle.

This thread is like asking a car sales person: „I’m looking for a really fast car. Which color do I buy, red or black?“

It just does not F*cking matter!

You’re asking the wrong questions!!

Let's all post on a topic that's been asked countless times on thread where the op hasn't been seen since June last year and where no other cowardly spineless retard will see it because they'll just make their own thread instead of searching.

It's about as pointless as that game nobody wanted to play and almost as bad as the thread asking why nobody wanted to play it.
