...Moving to Los Angeles (unless you can convince me that there is a better city in which to move).
I have almost moved out there a few times, but for one reason or another, I haven't. I toyed with the idea back in 2004 when I finished college and was attempting to break into the music business. Then in 2009 when I was doing hotel a/v work, I tried transferring out there, but couldn't find an opening. So, F*ck it, I'll do it now. Yes, I know there is terrible traffic, smog, $5.00 a gallon gasoline, gangs, earthquakes, street walking trannys, etc. There are also beaches, sunshine, girls in bikinis, big houses overlooking the ocean, and swimming pools filled with unicorn bones. Zero F*cks given. It has the best and worst of everything, it's all in what you make it. My hope is that new inspiration comes my way, or at least that problems and challenges are revealed to me that I can't see currently.
I'm in a much better position to do so now. I have excellent credit. I have around 15K saved up. My car is paid off. I do own a house in Nashville, where I live now, but all I need to do is rent out my bedroom, which shouldn't be an issue. Once I do that, I'll net somewhere from $300-$400 a month after expenses, which I can use towards a room in L.A. (at least part of the costs). I'm also much more mature, and I'm tougher emotionally now than I was 10 years ago when I was 21 (I'm 31 now). I also have a different mindset now than 5 or 10 years ago. My priorities are different. I've realized that my 20s are gone, and my 40s will be here before I know it. It's time to push myself harder, even if things get uncomfortable.
Last year, I realized how comfortable I had become, and I realized that this was a problem. My dreams weren't getting any closer, only further away. I was managing a T-Mobile franchise store, and was tired of all the bullshit. I threw a wrench in the gears and put in my notice. My boss made me a deal and offered me part-time to keep some money coming in, so I took it. This was fine for a while, but now the owner is more hands off because there is a regional manager in place now, and she clearly doesn't give a shit about what I want. My schedule is getting jerked around, and I'm sick of it. So here is what I am going to do: I will ask my boss to put in a transfer for me to either corporate or a franchise in L.A. If he gets that done, then I will have income out there while I get adjusted (and while I plan my final escape). If he doesn't get that done, then I'll do something different. Either way, I won't lose. I just have to be careful not to get too comfortable. I need some pressure. Pressure is good. Perhaps having no job out there would force me to hit the next level.
The timeline for this move is mid to end of May, it all depends how fast I can get things buttoned up in Tennessee. I still don't know exactly how the transition will go. 2000 miles with a 10 month old Boston Terrier will be tough, lots of pit stops to pee and smell stuff.
If any of you in the L.A. area have a room for rent, or know of anyone, let me know. This is currently the biggest hurdle, especially since I will have my Boston Terrier with me. I'd love to live with someone who knows the Fastlane Matrix. Anyway, if you've got any idea, let me know.
What exactly I will do out there, I'm not sure. I plan on writing a lot, and self-publishing my fiction, I know that much. I prefer to let the universe guide me. I'd rather be a vessel, if I could be. I think I will be more useful out there.
My dad has always had a saying: "No guts? No glory. No balls? No blue chips." I want the glory... and the blue chips.
