Hello everyone, I will use this thread as a diary of my entrepreneurial journey. This is the main information about me:
  • I am 24 years old and born in southern Italy, a place where the highest ambition for a young person is to work in an office for life or enlist in the armed forces.
  • I have a bachelor's degree in computer science, a master's degree in Data Science and several experiences abroad. I studied in Stockholm and worked in a big tech in Luxembourg, plus I ran a startup podcast where I got to interview several experts in the field of artificial intelligence and improved my ability to ask the right questions. Since January I am moving to Spain to work full-time as a Data Scientist.
  • I have a small YouTube channel where I talk about speeding up learning and I run a small podcast where I interview experts in different fields. Although it does not have much of a following partly because I never invested too much time in it, it has given me the opportunity to meet millionaires and investors and more generally to expand my network.
Why I want to become an entrepreneur:
  • I have always been a creative person and the idea of creating something of my own doesn't let me sleep at night. Also, when I get messages from people thanking me after watching one of my YouTube videos, I realized that giving value is what I enjoy most.
  • My mother died when I was 18, I want to start a foundation in her name and financially help as many boys and girls as possible to continue their schooling.
  • I want to be free and no longer have the need to work. If one day I want to read Russian literature all day, I want to be able to do that.
  • My escape number is about 8 million euros, this amount will allow me to live the life of my dreams without having the need to work. I aim to reach this figure in 10 years. It's not possible to earn this amount of money being and employee.
For 2023 my goals are:
  • Develop a SaaS platform and have at least one paying customer.
  • 25,000€ euros in the bank of liquidity.
What am I doing as of today?
  • In October I graduated from college and so now I have time to focus on my entrepreneurial career. I started thinking seriously about it 2 weeks ago.
  • I created a landing page for a SaaS service that I want to develop. I have created a small team of freelancers who are creating me the video introducing the platform and the background voice explaining what problem I am going to solve.
  • The landing page is ready, now I have to test the market response and improve the presentation based on feedback. My target audience is mainly students so I am going to talk to my brother's friends and the mayor of my country in such a way as to publicize my idea in schools. In addition to that, the video inside the landing page will be publicized on social and we will see how many people will enter their email inside the form.
  • I have not developed anything yet, if the response is positive will develop a prototype using no-code platforms.
I will update this thread every Sunday.
I don't know whether I will eventually succeed or not, I just tell you that I have seen the people I loved die and I in the first place risked my life. I don't give a damn about doing what needs to be done, I have no mental limitations.

I am always open to feedback, so feel free to comment.
I wish you a good life and a death with no regrets.

Hello everyone! This will be a slightly longer post than usual, as I will discuss my goals for 2023, what I've achieved and haven't achieved and why, the current state of affairs, and my objectives for 2024.

# What were my goals for 2023?
## Achieve at least €25,000 in my bank account.

  • Why this goal?
    • This amount allows me to support myself for at least 2 years if I decide to stay in Barcelona or anywhere else in Europe (except for countries with a very high cost of living, such as Switzerland), and thus pay for rent, or for more than 2 years if I decide to return home to my parents, where my expenses would be nil. In Barcelona, my monthly costs including rent and groceries are about €1,000-€1,200, and I have a saving power of over 30%. I track all my earnings and expenses, and having studied personal and behavioral finance, I feel quite robust in this regard.
  • Achieved?
    • Yes, I'm slightly above the goal and very happy about it. You can't understand the freedom I feel in having this amount of money and not having to submit to anyone. If I want, I can resign; otherwise, I stay. Clearly, it's not a vast sum that allows me to stop working, but it's still a small portion of freedom.

## Develop a SaaS and have at least one buyer.
  • Why this goal?
    • I have a bachelor's degree in computer science and a master's in Data Science, and have always been ambitious entrepreneurially. The SaaS business model aligns well with my technical background, and I find it very appealing due to its scalability advantages.
    • Working on a SaaS project not only allows me to build a side-business but also to learn marketable skills that enable me to increase my salary year by year. Two birds with one stone: I develop something of my own that could potentially earn me money and, simultaneously, I acquire technical and soft skills that are valuable in the job market. The salary I earn will finance my entrepreneurial climb.
    • I enjoy building, sharing with others, and improving my product.
  • Achieved?
    • Unfortunately, no, for the following reasons:
      • Despite my background in computer science, the skills I had at the beginning of the year were insufficient for developing a SaaS MVP, and no-code programs provide me with few real and marketable skills and are not suitable for my needs. I am now developing these skills, but to summarize, it's more challenging than I thought. However, I am learning many new things. My progress after work has been very slow. Of course, the start is slow, but then I'm sure my next MVP will be super fast, as I'll already know the whole technology stack needed and I realize I'm much faster than before. I need to have patience and focus on the process.
      • Sometimes I preferred to invest time in learning Spanish and networking by attending events with other entrepreneurs. I have acquired a good level of Spanish and met strong entrepreneurial individuals, which I don't regret.
      • I moved to a new country and I needed to invest time in understanding how the healthy system and all the burocratic things works.
      • I invested a lot of time in making video for my YouTube channel.
In summary, other things more important than the MVP have occurred. A new job in a new country, stress to handle and so on. But I've improved as a person and I feel stronger than before and with far more experience.

# Unexpected successes of 2023
  • I was invited to give a lecture on networking at a private business school where I explained how I managed to interview millionaires and famous people on a podcast that started with a zero budget. This allowed me to come into contact with the school's director and discuss with him the problems schools have and how to solve them.
  • I have reached a level of Spanish that allows me to live comfortably in Spain and Spanish-speaking countries, listen to, and understand everyone and everything. Clearly, I'm not a native speaker, but thinking that I can now talk to a couple million more people is pretty great.
  • I received several job offers that literally doubled my salary after just under two years of work experience (I graduated in 2022 on schedule) and considering that with each job change, my salary increased and currently, I definitely earn well above the Spanish average.
    • What does this mean?
      • The skills I have are valuable, I'm good at selling myself in job interviews, and the improvements to my personal branding on LinkedIn are having their effects; recruiters appreciate it. If I fail as an entrepreneur, I can find another job.
  • I reached a thousand subscribers on my YouTube channel, and many young people contact me asking for advice and more. I could think of selling them consultancy on how to get into a FAANG company and increase the chances of passing a technical interview. I've undoubtedly improved my communication skills.

# Current Status
Currently I work full-time as a Data Scientist, have a YouTube channel, and am working on the MVP of my SaaS that facilitates the job application process.

## Career
  • After the first 5 months, work started to get boring. The upside is that I manage my own time as I want and have a lot of freedom; the downside is that I feel like I'm dying inside doing the same stupid tasks every day (no, they can't be automated as they require a lot of human interaction), and I feel like I can do more. I've talked to my managers, but until the end of 2024, they can't give me other tasks because business plans must be respected.
    • Positive aspects
      • Saved money that will pay for any months without work that may come in the future if I decide to fully dedicate myself to entrepreneurship.
      • Benefits: a private insurance that allowed me to have free medical checks, free shoes, and a GoPro received as a prize for winning a hackathon. I will use this GoPro to shoot videos for my YouTube channel; currently, I use the company phone, which I will return when changing jobs.
      • I've learned a lot about A/B testing; this will serve me for my future projects, as A/B tests are essential for measuring the effects on a certain metric of a change to one's product.
      • Several very strong colleagues who I'm sure will make a career in the future.
      • I've learned a lot about myself, how to manage priorities and anxieties, how to talk with bosses, how to sell my ideas.
      • They did the paperwork for me to be able to work legally in Spain. This means that I can now work in two countries (Italy and Spain) without any problem. In case I can't find another job in Spain, I'm covered.
      • I've already developed a plan to become an ML Engineer so as to change roles (a bit more technical) and companies (I need fresh air and lively people around, perhaps a startup).

## YouTube Channel
  • With 1k subscribers, I tried to sell consultations on how to use Obsidian (a note-taking program) but had little success, and I suppose the reasons are as follows:
    • The problem is not felt; people don't care about creating a digital archive that allows them to connect information. The majority are too lazy and want the magic formula. Obviously, I don't take it personally; 99% will never achieve anything, and the methods I teach allow me to study better and faster, always having an advantage over them.
    • The target has little money; my target audience would be broke college students.
  • I've learned a couple of things about business, anyway, I haven't spent money, and I've gained contacts since many of these people work in large tech companies and if they don't work there, they will in the future as they are very intelligent and ambitious people.
  • Currently, I do weekly live streams in which I work on my MVP, so not only do I create content, but I also work on my side business.
## MVP
  • The idea is to solve a personal problem: finding a job faster. My SaaS allows having a single space in which to converge different jobs uploaded on platforms like LinkedIn, then handle showing the user the jobs they are most likely to be selected for and automatically write a cover letter and contact the recruiter via email.
  • My web development skills are limited; I've been programming in Python for 6 years but know nothing about Django. I'm learning Django, React, GraphQL, and other useful stuff. I am very happy because I'm learning new and marketable skills, and they will also facilitate my future entrepreneurial rise, allowing me to rapidly develop what I want on my own.

# Goals for 2024
## Career

I need to find a job as an ML Engineer as it will allow me to learn skills such as deploying an ML model to production and monitoring it, etc. This skill, in my opinion, will gain increasing value in the job market, allowing me to have high salaries but also helping me in entrepreneurship as AI models already solve many problems and will solve many more in the future. Therefore, being able to implement AI in one's digital products will be a considerable advantage.

## Side business
Develop MVP and have at least one buyer. One is enough for now to live the sensation of being able to create something useful for people. Once the spark happens, the rise will be unstoppable. Just the first customer, only one for now.

## Mindset
Understand what my fundamental personal values are. Sometimes I feel like I am constantly running and doing things but never stopping to consider if I am satisfied with what I am doing. I took inspiration from THIS THREAD and intend to dedicate more time to myself to understand what is important to me so that I can know in advance whether a particular life or business choice is aligned with these values and whether it will make me feel good or bad. I understand that as MJ says, one needs to be altruistic in a world of egoists, but living miserably every day doing things completely outside your values, I'd say no. I seek balance.

Of course, I have already proceeded to divide these goals into measurable sub-goals, don't worry.

# Goal for next week?
  • I don't work, so I will have plenty of time. First and foremost, I need to send out at least 21 well-written CVs per week.
  • I need to implement features for my SaaS, specifically developing the task that will synchronously and independently find new job offers and update the database.
  • I will take different personality tests and compare them to understand some of my characteristics. Additionally, I will dedicate time to ask myself what my goals are and understand the real motivation that drives me to pursue them.

---

Thank you for making it this far; I hope I've been thorough. A special thanks to @MJ DeMarco , @Spenny and @fx.lukasx

If you're wondering about my goal for 10 years from now, I invite you to read my first post in THIS THREAD. **My mother passed away a few years ago, and the least I can do is establish a foundation in her name.**

I will update this thread weekly, keeping you posted on what I have done, what I will do, and any thoughts I might have about it.

See you soon, guys— seize life!

What I Accomplished
Side business:

  • Up to now, I've collected 21 emails of high-profiled people targeted by the Google ADS campaign I launched on Monday. I've optimized the landing page and the Google ADS campaigns, making several changes that resulted in increased CTR and impression share. For example, I adjusted the copy on my landing page, headlines, and ad descriptions to align with the search terms I was bidding on, leading to a significant increase in CTR and impression share. Now, I'm also able to link each ad group (containing only one search term) to the number of conversions (signups) it generates, providing me with more data on which ad groups are performing better.

  • I took the optimized campaign above and scaled it in three other different countries. Currently, I'm focused on gathering data about the expected impressions I could attain, after which I'll consider increasing bids if I find potential. Thanks to @Andy Black for teaching me this framework through your posts.

  • I used a well-known framework in the email marketing field to craft an email to send to the users subscribed to my waiting list, asking them to become beta testers. Three of them have already accepted (and it's quite possible I'll receive some other positive answers in the next few days). I've also created a Telegram channel where I can easily and rapidly communicate with them, receive feedback, adjust the MVP, and iterate. ACT, ASSESS, ADJUST (thanks to @MJ DeMarco for this simple but powerful framework).
Goals for the Next Week
Side business:

  • I'll work on building the MVP using a no-code tool to gather feedback from my beta testers as soon as possible. Although I have a background as a software developer, I've never used these tools before, so I'll be learning as I go. I believe it's a good investment of time with a positive ROI in the future.
Honestly, guys, I'm really proud of my progress. Over the last two weeks, I've learned how to write a compelling landing page, gained a basic understanding of how Google ADS works, learned how to identify what visitors are searching for on Google and what problems they have, and how to write good headlines and descriptions for my Google ads, among other things.

In the meantime, I'm also building a personal framework that I call "MVP Factory," where I compile all the important materials I've found about how to find business ideas, test them, and market them.

I'd also say thanks to all the people in this forum who are indirectly motivating me thanks to your posts and comments. Especially, I'd like to say thanks to @Antifragile , @MTF and @Black_Dragon43

Update 01/01/2023

- I placed the promotional video within the landing page with the hope of increasing conversions. I also fixed a graphical error when visiting the web page from a smartphone.
- Due to various unforeseen events, I was unable to create a Facebook campaign, which was a lucky thing. I created several threads (in English) on Reddit in which I asked indirectly what the problems were with a particular service (without showing my landing page as it was written in Italian and with the audio of the video in Italian) and got over 80 replies, many of them argued. The cool thing is that some of the responses had a lot of likes, so some of the problems are really heartfelt. I took notes and prioritised some of the problems which will result in an MVP. How much time and money should I have spent to get all this feedback? I bless that I was born in this era!
- Having never done interviews to validate an idea, I read a few chapters of a book about it and created a framework for myself that I will always keep up to date. I swear, I did not read to procrastinate.

Objectives next week:
- To receive at least 10 pieces of feedback (between calls and low-budget ad campaigns) from potential customers about my landing page and the product I intend to create.
- Sketch out the design and see whether to hire a design on Fiverr. I have a strong feeling that a simple design will be one of the main points of my product to leverage.

That's all for the week, best wishes for the new year. Be faithful to the process!

Failure is one step closer to success, because you often learn more from trying than just sitting and theorizing about it. I genuinely thought it was a meme until I tried it for myself.

Looking forward to your YT video. I am also in my twenties and working on an MVP. I need to make YT for marketing. I absolutely hate the sound of my own voice though, but sometimes you gotta do what you hate to do what you love.

UPDATE 02/07/2023:
  • I'm in a mentorship program (I don't pay for some reasons) with a women that has more than 10+ years of experience in marketing and that currently work in Nike. We're developing together the strategy to build my personal brand on YouTube and to monetise it.
  • After some autoanalysis, I got that in order to keep myself motivated I should work on something that give me feedback and that I enjoy a bit. With YouTube I could communicate and learn new thing (I like both) and receive feedbacks from my community.
If there are people truly interested in the content you make, that's a great match. However, even with YouTube there will be things you might not like and might not align with your ideology for example, but gamifying things and implementing the strategies you mentioned for better learning will help you through struggles.
And about feedback, don't get hooked on it. From your original post and the updates I believe you will be successful if you continue putting in the effort, but who was here to reinforce you along the way on the forum? Again, lack of feedback. Luckily some people read your posts and responded something nice, but not many. The bottom line is that you should find passion, values and motivation within without getting dependent on feedback. Great work so far, keep it up!

  • I've uploaded my second YouTube video. Both are going very well and one person DM me on LinkedIn to book a free consultation. I think that the need is there, I need to keep working!
  • In the meantime I'm doing other interviews with the goal to obtain a new job where I can grow more my technical skill.

UPDATE 27/08/2023:
  • People have started to contact me for consultancy! While I haven't received any payments yet, it's encouraging to see progress. I'll certainly update once I have my first paying customer. I'm quite content about this development!
  • I'm actively seeking a new job as I feel that my current role isn't allowing me to make the most of my potential. My tasks have become repetitive, but I believe I can achieve much more. I'm considering the possibility of relocating to an affordable country with a friend for 6-12 months to solely focus on our projects. However, I'm still deliberating this option.
  • I'm also writing down all the problems or the things people hate in order to have a list of possible ideas to use as a base of an MVP. SaaS business is something I always wanted to try. Let's see, maybe in the future..

UPDATE 12/11/2023:
A lot to do at my full-time job but some good news:
  • At my full-time job, I'm working on a Machine Learning model to predict user churn. I discuss this idea with entrepreneurs I meet weekly at a meetup, and it seems promising. It's perfect to apply what I'm learning at work outside of it. This way, I'm acquiring new skills and developing something that can be sold.
  • Remember my YouTube channel? It's gaining traction, and I've started doing live sessions where I show people how I build my MVP. This not only motivates me to keep working on my project but also increases engagement among users, helping me create more content for my channel and growth my community mostly made by software developers and data scientists.

I'm currently in London for holidays so I didn't have too much time to work on the business but before leaving, I started working a new strategy.

I followed all the videos of @Andy Black on Google ADS, and I'm planning to test my ideas in South America. I already did an analysis of the competitors and of the demand of the service I'm offering and I'll test few landing pages. Let's see how it goes.

What I Accomplished
Side business:

  • Over the past week, I launched my first Google ADS campaign with a daily budget of 10€ and acquired 23 emails (see dashboard screenshot below). I am pleased with the results, but I feel that I could have obtained more emails if I had more expertise in Google ADS and optimized the keyword research phase.
  • To improve my skills, I have started reading @Andy Black posts on LinkedIn to learn how to properly analyze a Google ADS dashboard and gain valuable insights.
  • I have enrolled in a Google ADS course and am focusing on acquiring as much practical knowledge as possible to apply to my campaign.

    1712492746826.png
Goals for the Next Week
Side business:

  • Continue with the Google ADS course and immediately start applying the new knowledge to my campaign and landing page.
  • Continue reading Andy's series on LinkedIn.
  • Send an email to some users on my waiting list to ask them questions (in the style of "The Mom Test") to better understand their problems and improve the product and landing page.

Hey BlackLands!

Massive well done for everything you have done already. I am in tech and Italian too, and although I live abroad I prefectly know what does it meant intended as coming from south of Italy , the social texture and mindset ( I'd dare say Italy as whole, generally speaking ). So be proud of everything you have already built!

I genuinely wish you the best for your journey and I have faith that you'll succeed in some way. All the best for you!

Cheers from a fellow Italian who lives oversea!

Update 08/01/2023

- I learnt how to use Figma's basic functionality for creating clickable wireframes. I also discovered that there are plugins in Figma that allow you to copy the design in such a way that you have a starting point, this saves a lot of time.
- I have created clickable wireframes with the main interfaces of the platform I intend to develop. I think I will post the results on various subreddits to get advice and understand what people think.
- I have created a Facebook/Instagram campaign that will be launched from Monday and will last 4 days, maximum budget 100€. The aim is to publicise the landing page and test the market.

UPDATE 15/01/2023
  • These days I started a Facebook and Instagram campaign of 100 euros maximum with the goal of validating my idea and verifying that many users would enter their email and show interest. I received very few responses. I created the landing page with Canva which unfortunately does not support Pixel, so I have no way to analyze some metrics related to the campaign. I learned an important lesson at my expense, always monitor metrics.
  • I will use the 3A method learned from MJ to check if the lack of responses are due to an invalid idea or something I did wrong (e.g., copy or media content of the ADSs).
  • Goal for this week is to recreate the landing page using a platform that supports Pixel and learn how to create multimedia content based on my target audience.
  • I also arrived in Barcelona this week and will start work shortly, definitely slowing down my progress due to less time available.

  • I've arrived one week ago in Barcelona and I've spent most of times in make me comfortable in my new house and in the new city.
  • I've start investing at least 30 minutes a day in learning Spanish since it would be important to make new relationship.
  • Next week I'll join some meet-ups with other entrepreneurs.
  • I didn't have a lot of time to work on my project, my goal for the next week is to create a list of errors I made and aspects where I can improve and based on this, create an action plan.

UPDATE 29/01/2023:
  • I finished my first week of work as a Data Scientist. Good salary, good benefits, and most importantly my company is paying me to learn skills that will be useful for my entrepreneurial journey (analyzing churns, retentions, LTV, etc.).
  • I attended several MeetUp on entrepreneurship where I met experienced people who gave me feedback on my idea and other useful things (customer acquisition, MVP building, and more).
  • I finished a crash course on Bubble, my goal for next week is to implement the most important feature and use it as a prototype to give to users. No landing page this time, just a prototype.
  • What will I do when I have a decent MVP? I will print flyers and place them in strategic places. Will it work? I don't know, but at least I'm getting out of the comfort zone.

UPDATE 12/03/2023:
  • Good news at job, they liked my work and moved me to another team where I'll be surrounded by experts in Data Science and business. Growth, growth, growth.
  • About my side project, while I'm waiting to receive my new equipment and to understand how manage my work-life balance, I'm reading story of people building saas using nocode tools. I think that's will be my way.

Hi,
may I ask what stories you are reading? I'm interested in this topic and just checked convertkit out and I quite liked it.

Hi, if you search for "micro saas no code" on Google you'll find a lot of stories of people earning 50 to 1000 euro or more thanks to their SaaS built using no-code platform.

UPDATE 19/03/2023:
  • Okay guys, the progress on my MVP at the moment is a bit stopped since after work and considering the commuting time I don't have much time to work on it. By the way this week my second monitor should arrive and I will be able to start working from home.
  • As I said in previous posts, I am working a lot at work but learning a lot of new things. I am asking for suggestions from many experienced people in the field of data science and business. I feel that I can grow fast and learn many new things that would be helpful in the future.

The way you verified the demand for the problem is pretty interesting. I never thought about just asking people on the internet on what they think about X.

But specifically, what type of problem is the idea based upon ?
Basically the classic way to memorize things doesn't work, I mean read-repeat isn't useful and there are other ways that works better.

I'd like to build a platform that automatically do that helping students all around the world.

UPDATE 10/04/2023:
  • The MVP of the mobile application is quite ready and I just come back from holidays. In the following days I'll start receiving feedbacks from my sister and her colleagues in order to understand how to improve the app.
  • At the meantime I'm learning new stuff in my full-time job.

UPDATE 23/04/2023:
  • I gave the first MVP of the app to my sister and I received my first feedbacks.
  • I need to improve the logic that handle the assignment of the work shifts since I didn't take in account some constraints and use cases. I'm working on it together with my best friend that is a software engineer. The work seems to be harder than we expected, but it's okay.

UPDATE 07/05/2023:
  • Working on the MVP, the logic it's difficult! At least the entry barrier is high
