Hello fellow fastlaners/wannabe fastlaners.

It looks like that they've released a whole lot of new domain types such as .info .fitness .Company .center .tips and so forth.

Do you think they're any worth?
Do you think that they will influence the industry/market?
Or will they just be useless endings as the .com will still be the only one counting for commercial purposes?

I find it quite interesting but I do not know enough (anything) about these kind of things.

Useless

Just a marketing motive from domain companies to make more $

I think .info has been around for years now. Not sure about the others.

The thing about the more specialized domains is that they only have a few really important and desirable spaces.

Like if you are in the health & fitness niche and get "workout.fitness" then that's huge. But beyond the really broad names, it's not helpful. If your company name is "xyzsupplements" than "xyzsupplements.com" is still going to be a superior name to "xyzsupplements.fitness".

.com is still the easier to remember, then .net, and after that none are really useful.

Thank you for your thoughts guys

I personally could see it work, but only if every site would start using the "domains for their type of site".

i would only buy .com or specific country domain type.

If XYZ.company or XYZ.net put out an ad then some of their intended traffic will benefit the XYZ.com company, but not vice versa.

If you have a site that is .com today.. Say apple.com, and then you can register apple.phone and direct the traffic from .phone to .com like it's done with .net etc.

But I think it's too early to pick any niche names for eg. a .food site. But if your plan is to build a large domain catalog, then jump on some broad names.

Remember that the Internet is only about 15 years old (comercial-wise) so imagine 15 years ahead if the development to in the same pace as now.

rwiman said:

Remember that the Internet is only about 15 years old (comercial-wise) so imagine 15 years ahead if the development to in the same pace as now.

Just for clarification, the commercial internet is over 30 years old now..

The new domains aren't anything to worry about -- there has been a big push by domain registrars and startups to register other top-level domains for over a decade (with .co, .us, .net, .org, .info, etc.)

But if you are branding a company that you want people to come back to over-and-over again, the public has the widespread notion that all domains are .com...so registering anything else will handicap you in terms of branding.

If you drive most of your traffic with paid ads or SEO, though, you can get away with a different top-level domain until you can afford to buy a good .com that is consistent with your brand (like MJ did with limos.com)
