I'll keep this very short:
Don't use language learning books. They usually teach you unnatural language rather than something that'd help you understand actual spoken language or speak it without sounding like a textbook.
What you do instead:
1) If the language uses a different writing system, you might want to learn that first. Exceptions: Chinese and Japanese. Would be too much to learn at once. Learn those on the go as you get familiar with more words.
2) Get a list of the 100 most common words, learn those.
3) Get a pdf with basic grammar, just quickly glimpse over it so you get a rough idea on what to look for in the following step.
4) Immerse yourself in the language. Every Google search, every YouTube video, every series you watch is from now on in the target language. Yes, it WILL be annoying to look up every second word at first, but that still beats the nonsense exercises you can find in textbooks. Also, if you don't understand a word or grammatical construct, look it up.
And yes, that's how I learned multiple languages.
