Hi my name is Blake I’m 19 and studying aerospace engineering in college. A few months ago I got onto self improvement and have been working at a car shop, doing Jiu Jitsu, practicing my social skills, doing some window washing on the side, and lifting.
Recently though I’ve been overthinking a lot about every decision that I make. I’ll end up spending a ton of mental energy going back and forth debating what’s the right choice to make, imagine 2 different successful role models explaining why each decision is correct, if I should even be worrying about that at all, if I’m overthinking about it, what others will think about me and who I want to be accepted by, and if it’s damaging my character to even be thinking about the decision too much.
For example, recently my parents offered to buy me a really nice car. I’ve spent about a month debating in my mind if I should accept it or not. I currently have $3500 saved up, and with the current car market, any car I buy on my own would probably need repairs that I can’t afford. So while it may be smart to accept their offer, wouldn’t it damage my character? Would paying for my own car be a kind of right of passage? But long term financially and logically it would be probably be best to accept it. Or am I just coping and subconsciously being materialistic? I imagine my successful uncle telling me it’s not that big of a deal and to be grateful for such a gift and to work hard to help my parents out. Then I imagine some other successful guy saying to be a man and to not sponge off of my parents, and that buying my own car shows responsibility and maturity.
I’ll debate about every decision like this constantly, like how to deal with a co worker, how to act, who to make friends with, what hobbies to pick up, what to do in the future, to have a desert or not, etc etc. And I’ll debate wether it’s even a problem in the first place, if I should be worried about it or not, etc.
I know this forum is probably the wrong place for this and this post probably sounds entitled neurotic and ridiculous, because this is all in my head and probably not a big deal, but I’d really like some guidance on how to know if the decisions I make are a big deal or not, and how to not overthink too much.
