Shocker.

Too bad someone hasn't written any books on why affiliate marketing is a low-return, low-entry, high effort "business" where the 1% of the successes in the field go on to sell courses and training.

It's not get rich quick, haha. If you don't have skills like media buying and copywriting, you're looking to get "lucky" to make money in this. Unless, you run a killer offer on a untapped traffic source.

But yeah, like MJ said - it's a high effort business.

Did you even read the books? I was doing affiliate marketing for YEARS and I wish I was reading MJ's books earlier. A complete waste of time, money, and effort. I believe IT IS POSSIBLE to make good money w/ affiliate marketing but it's tough with tons of competition.

Absolutely right affiliate marketing is a low return business. But there are some people who made it big with it and i think you need to have a skillset of sales or a lot of money if you want to succeed with affiliate marketing. But, if you can do a lot of work and have patience for a few months, then you can succeed with it. So if you're looking to be successful with affiliate marketing in 15 days, you shouldn't be doing it. And I think, very few business succeed in first 15 days.

Many successful affiliate marketer made their first sale after failing for first 1-3 months.

While this is true generally, I do know guys who make $200-300K/mo with affiliate marketing… but that income can be there one month and gone the next, it’s not a business in terms of sustainability. But you can make a nice income if you choose your products wisely and remain flexible/adaptable. Also, affiliate CAN scale very fast. In a few months you can go from 0 to $300K…

To the OP, the most important thing about affiliate marketing BY FAR is finding products that sell well. Choosing your products is the key. Most of the big hitters spend most of their time testing products. How do they test? Well, they COPY/PASTE another funnel that seems to be getting good results. If the product works and sells profitably on their end, then they invest to build their own, better funnel.

I’ve worked with my agency for many such “performance marketers” as they call themselves. The most important skill for them by far is PRODUCT SOURCING - finding the right products. That is obviously followed by copywriting/marketing skill, BUT many of them outsource that because the product does most of the heavy lifting.

Whereas you guys, the people who make pennies with affiliate, try to sell some common product, say Bluehost website hosting, and then you buy courses that promise to teach you how to write MaGiC CoPy that will magically produce an avalanche of sales, because hey, copywriting is the secret to more sales right?! You cannot build an affiliate business if you don’t understand the cause and effect relationships underlying it.

We're looking into setting up an affiliate program for our books. I don't know yet if this is dumb idea as the books are low ticket items, but could represent a nice bit of pin money for microinfluencers. (to put it into context we could pay about $6 per sale).

What we like about it from a marketing perspective is that it's performance based and giving our marketing spend to the people actually doing the work rather than some big corps like FB. Also, there's the possibility of finding a handful of super fan brand ambassadors who really go for pushing our products. What we don't like is that it's potentially doing a lot of work on our end looking after the affiliates or shelling out to an intermediate.

There appears to be a growing shift into forming partnerships with affiliates as the big ad platforms are pricing out small startups and organic growth is now pretty much a dead end.

I'm very interested to hear any thoughts or experiences on this.

btw 'shelling out', is a rather out dated British term meaning spending money! I suddenly feel my age!

Given those rates, I doubt you’ll get many affiliates. My eyes don’t go like below when I see your opportunity:

1648832364822.gif

The truly good affiliates sell digital products that go for thousands of dollars, where the potential payment in the funnel for one customer goes up to $4-5K+ TO THE AFFILIATE if the customer buys everything in there.

As an affiliate I have to decide between selling your books, or some other product that pays much bigger commissions. You’re competing against literarily all other opportunities out there.

Also, going for affiliates with a fixed audience, rather than those who can sell by ppc is usually an inferior strategy in terms of how quickly it scales!

Thanks Black Dragon, useful info and you are right about our books being hardly worth it to an affiliate. Am also thinking that it may be worth it just to help with exposure. I discovered that our competitor selling the same value product runs a program. I think perhaps microinfluencers may be interested? The only way to find out is to suck it and see!

That anim of Daffy is mesmerising. My eyeballs are doing that now!

I don't understand why affiliate marketing is treated like the red-headed stepchild of entrepreneurship.

Sure, you can shill products for pennies on the dollar, or spend years building niche sites around products that yield 2-6% commissions, but there's also another world to AM that @Black_Dragon43 describes above.

Does it violate some elements of CENTS? Yes.

Is it a low barrier to entry? Kinda-ish.

Anyone with an internet connection can compete selling the same product as you, but what separates those who succeed from those who don't are skills.

Copywriting...

Driving traffic...

Offer creation...

Determining what makes a great product/service to sell and what doesn't...

Etc.

These aren't tiny things. These skills take months, if not years, to get proficient in. And the last time I checked, months and years being poured into anything isn't a low barrier to entry.

But hey, I'm just a bloke with a moon head holding a staff.

As for the OP...

You need to provide more context.

What have you spent the last 15 days doing exactly? Have you got an email list that you're selling the product through, or are you sending people directly to the offer? Where are you finding your prospects? Where in the sales cycle are they currently?

For all I know, you could be slinging a weight loss product in a bulking forum.

You should first identify your niche. You can select the programme that is most appropriate for you based on your area of specialisation.

You can also look through the online reference materials that can aid you initially. I can suggest the BitDegree e-book library based on my personal experience because it helped me get started and can still help if you're a member of the BitDegree affiliate programme.

Check the affiliate marketing tools that can be helpful for tracking the progress as well.

But I feel the competition depends on the kinds of product you're promoting.
