I need help!

I have what I think is a decent idea for a website/business. (I have one and my idea gave the hubby his own version of it so now its 2)
I am not sure how to go from the ideas to making money with them.

I dont know what kind of format to use for the website.

I dont know how to tell you what I need it to do without giving it all away lol.

I bought the .com already and want to move forward but have no clue where to start.

HELP!

I am thinking that possibly a forum type website might work? I dont know...:smx4:

Here's one thing about web business - sometimes when you "think" people
want something... you are totally wrong. So don't overthink it.

I would suggest you create some content around the topic/niche you
are "thinking" about to draw in some traffic. You can direct pay per click
ads to it for pretty much instant high targeted traffic. Then survey
those people and find out EXACTLY what they want and give it to them.

You can use wordpress to manage your site since it sounds like you
are a newbie in terms of the technical side. There are a million
themes floating around and tons of plug-ins that will give you just
about anything you need to manage your site.

I don't have a lot of time right now, but this should help you develop a plan:

1. Do market research, find your competitors and build a list of keyword
phrases that your target market are using.

2. Write (or outsource) some high quality content/articles that focus
on your keyword group.

3. Offer some kind of freebie, newsletter, incentive for people to jump
on your email list. - Use either aweber.com or getresponse.com the only
two autoresponder/list service providers I would recommend. They already
have rock solid relationships with all of the major ISP's and use special
"keys" in all of their email so their customers emails bypass spam filters. This
is critical!

4. Set up some high targeted PPC ads on yahoos search market place, MSNs
ad network and google adwords to drive traffic to your content and list
incentive.

5. Start surveying your leads. Find out what they want, what they buy, what
they read etc. You'll start picking up patterns and be able to feed your market
by their wants instead of what you think they want.

Keep it simple at first so you're not wasting time and money chasing ghosts. You
want to make sure you know exactly what this market wants to spend money
on before hand.

If I get some time later I'll drop back in and follow up a bit.

theres lots of interest in this guaranteed.

right now there isnt another website thats doing this.

now that Im thinking more about it something like myspace setup thats community based would maybe work better then a forum.

I dont want to put too much out there without having something available because I dont know what I am doing lol. It wouldnt take very long for someone else to do what I need to do faster then I can and get out first.

even if i have to change at least I will be out there...

I know some stuff about web business. (keywords, auto responders, ppc vs organic, viral marketing ect)

I have read alot, Ive just never used anything I ever learned for anything productive lmao.

I have lots of knowledge and no experience!

How does it make money?

Id imagine in a few ways.

Possibly different levels of membership. those being served paying to join while those doing the services are free. (perhaps even earn cash or some type of rewards as incentive for them to be there)

advertising for lots of expensive products and info out there for this niche already.

creating my own products possible in the future.

probably many more im not thinking out yet lol.

earning commissions by affilliating with existing products in addition to the regular advertising.

Well, it's not like there is exactly a software that they used to build the websites. They have all sorts of programmers in order to make their interactive websites. Some languages of interest would be HTML, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL (for a database) to begin to learn. The are also many others you could possibly use. I'm not going to lie if you haven't programmed before it's a little overwhelming but trust me, learn it, and it's worth it.

Some free ones:

or:

Go to elance, make a post about needing a social networking site created. Ask them to post URLs of social networking sites that they have done. Go to the links. Most of the sites will be dead sites. Contact the owners and ask them to sell or give you the site.

Ok in that case... dolphin is a really good open source social networking platform.

(hmmm - the forum will not let me post a link. if you go to Boonex dot com you'll
find all the details on dolphin.)

It's kind of hard to give advice without knowing the basics of what you are doing. Dolphin
like wordpress has a ton of modules, addons etc. and they have a large community of
developers working around it. They do provide a supported install option too where they
would handle all the technical BS for you.

They initially started dolphin as a dating site platform but it has morphed into
a total social networking platform as a direct result of user feedback and
contributions. It's a really cool system.

That's a good tip and you're right. There are so many dead sites out there just
waiting to be picked clean.

"I dont know how to tell you what I need it to do without giving it all away lol." It's hard to comment on an idea that is not stated clearly. If it's that good why not approach a VC or sell the idea ... unless you have a lot of money to throw at it (we are all you got :)) My suggestion; throw the idea out to this group and let others comment on it ... 9 out 10 the idea has been done, tried or thought of by many others. Community based forums are plentiful ... myspace, facebook, linkedIn, etc. Check out the free service by ning.com, yahoo groups, etc. You can hire a programmer to craft your idea into a site ... but do a lot of research first. I had this great idea the other day, told one entrepreneur about it ... he jumped up and down and said "that's a great idea, Mr. Doug" ... I did a little research and found eBay was offering a similar service to charities. Good luck!
