First post here... apologies in advance if I post it in the wrong place or break protocol in some other way.

My question is this: How important do you think it is for a Fastlaner to be able to program? Is it worth the time for a 30-something to start from (basically) scratch to try to be able to code?

If so, where would you begin?

If not, how would you go about creating your online muse? Would you outsource the programming entirely? Or would you use some sort of website template or something?

First things first, Go to the Introductions forum and Introduce yourself to the community or else you'll probably have a hard time going around here, My 2 cents on this is, If your primary business is web related you should atleast know a few languages not necessarily enough to program but enough to understand and convey information to programmers or web developers where coding is concerned

Welcome to the forum!

msufan said:

How important do you think it is for a Fastlaner to be able to program?

There are millionaires and billionaires that don't know a single thing about how to code (even ones that do all of their business online). So how important is it to be able to code? It isn't. That doesn't mean it's not valuable, it just means that you can do anything without knowing how to code. You just have to hire people that know how.

I would suggest you look up some other threads about the "to code or not to code" subject before it gets messy :hula: <- random smiley face

Welcome to the forum!

Learn it if you're interested in it from an intellectual pursuit or you enjoy it.

Please search the forum -- there are several lengthy posts on this scattered throughout the forum. I prefer not to see another "do I learn to code" thread which is the 1st cousin to the "do I go to college" thread.

It's been done here before, and too many times.

SEARCH.

I think your framing this question as an "either or" problem. Either I learn to code or I don't. I don't think this is right.

The key is to never stop learning. The key is to be at least FAMILIAR with the basic concepts so that you can at least hire someone with better programming skills than yourself so you can know what to communicate and so you can know what you are getting. And so you can focus on other things.

Ah, the never-ending coding debate...

I would say it has to do with how relevant it is to you.

Do you have time to learn how to code? More importantly, become really, really, good at it? Or you might have the money or resources to find someone else to do it? You might know a programming wiz that is willing to do easy tasks for you. You probably can meet one at a bar or entrepreneurial events too.

This will teach you the basics. You can follow these tutorials - here's the links:

Javascript Tutorial - Intro
PHP Tutorial - Introduction
Perl Tutorial - Introduction
Ajax Tutorial - Tutorial
ASP Tutorial - Introduction

PS html/css tutorials are also available if that type of stuff interests you.

This should help you learn the basics in some of the computer languages. So whether you choose not to hone your skills any further, at least you will know how to articulate your ideas to programmers

Searching for things like "learn to code" or "coding" doesn't seem to bring up any of those threads, though. 😕

An advanced search of the phrase 'learn to code' results in more than enough reading material to last you for a while.

Please do create an introduction thread. Welcome to the forum.

Thread moved.

Here is a far better way to search the forum:

Let me google that for you

type "fastlane forum" and then ":" and then whatever topic you are searching for
